Marro, George - George Matthew Marro, 74, formerly of Newark, died in Arvada, Colorado on December 8, 2001. The son of Dennis and Mary Marro, George was born in Newark in 1927. He served in the United States Navy, entering the service at the age of 15. He served in the Pacific for the duration of the World War II. After he was discharged, he entered the University of Chicago where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in history. At Colorado State, he earned a Master's degree in journalism. He taught history, was an artist and had exhibits in several galleries. At one time he worked as a publicist for the Ice Capades. Mr. Marro is survived by his daughter, Sandra (Tom) Robinette of Colorado; two sons, Robert (Terry) Marro of Colorado, and George (Sandra) Marro of California.; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild; three sisters, Theresa Pitrella of Newark, Madaline DeMaria of Geneva, Angeline (Harold) Janto of New Jersey; two brothers, Lawrence (Irene) of Florida, Thomas (Arlene) of Pennsylvania; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Theodore.

Bechtel, Sally Ann - Sally Ann 'Becky' Bechtel, 66, of California, formerly of Newark, died October 28, 2001 in Oceanside, California. Born May 26, 1935 in Erie, PA, a graduate of Edinboro College in PA, she lived in Vista, California since 1978. She was an art teacher (1959-77) in Newark at the Roosevelt and Lincoln Elementary Schools and the Middle School. She was active in the United Methodist Church, especially in the choir. She was a former member of the Newark Players Theater group. Sally is survived by her sisters, Marge Depkovich of Placerville, CA and Betty Johnson of Erie, PA, and many friends in the Newark area.

Ahrans, Donald - Donald R. Ahrans, 75, of Newark, died December 27, 2001. Don was born August 24, 1926 in Buffalo, to Albert and Eva Townsend Ahrans; his family moved to Lyons shortly thereafter. He worked for the State Department of Transportation for more than 41 years and was Chief Lock Operator at Lock 30 in Macedon, retiring in 1984. He was a member of Deluge Hose Co. No. 1 of the Newark Fire Department for 47 years, past president of the Wayne County Volunteer Fireman's Association and was Director of the North Central Volunteer Fireman's Association. He was a life member of the Newark Elks Lodge, Arcadia Memorial VFW Post 2883 and a 58-year member of the August Mauer American Legion Post 286. He was a sergeant in the Army Signal Corps, serving in Italy during WWII. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Esther; two sons, Donald F. (Lisa) and Ronald and two grandchildren, Jennifer and Matthew, all of Newark; his mother, Eva Ahrans of Lyons; and sister, Alberta (Robert) Sloan of Savannah. He was predeceased by his brother Frank, who died in October of 2000. Interment, Riverview Cemetery.

Bassett, Hank - Albert 'Hank' Bassett, 70, of Newark died December 31, 2001 at Rochester General Hospital. Mr. Bassett was born December 24, 1931 in Constableville, NY to Eugene and Anna Tulley Bassett. He worked at Garlock, Inc. for over 40 years where he was a foreman in the powerhouse, retiring in 1993. He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. He was involved in several local organizations. He served as a director of the Newark Elks Lodge #1249, was Past Commander of the Arcadia Memorial Post #2883 VFW, a member of the August Mauer Post #286, American Legion and the Newark Masonic Lodge # 83. He served with the Marines in Korea during the Korean War. An avid outdoorsman, he especially enjoyed his hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Emmajean 'Blondie,' daughter Michelle (Charles) Clarrett of Newark, two granddaughters Samantha and Ashley; brother, James (Delores) Bassett of West Leyden; three sisters, Elly Menzer of Boonville, June (Charles) Beha of West Leyden, and Maggie (Stanley) Tukoski of Fort Collins, CO; cousin, Gary Healt of Constableville. He was predeceased by his son, Michael, in 1986. Interment in Newark Cemetery.

Varalli, Nicholas - Nicholas A. Varalli, 78, of Lyons, died December 26, 2001 at Rochester General Hospital. Nick was born October 31, 1923 in Lyons, to James Carmella Dapolito Varalli. He retired as a machinist and welder from the state canal system at the Lyons Docks. He was a Navy veteran, having served during WWII. He was decorated for his service on D-Day in Normandy. He was a member of the VFW Post 5092 in Lyons, and a past member of the Clyde Saxton Band. He is survived by his daughter, Carol (Ron) George of Newark; sons, Daniel (Judy Nelson) Varalli of Virginia and David (Sharon) Varalli of Marion; grandchildren, Debbie and Brian George, Miles, Jill and Alison Varalli, Hillary and Josh Swanson, and Nicholas, Andrew and Catherine Varalli; brother, Angelo (Agnes) Varalli of Lyons; two sisters, Lisa (John) DePerry of Florida, and Jenny (Tom) Steve of Clyde; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Antonette, in 1997, brother Daniel, and sister Mary Indavino. Interment will be in South Lyons Cemetery in the spring.

DeRue, Barbara - Barbara D. DeRue, 64, of Phelps/Syracuse, died December 28, 2001 in Syracuse. Barbara was born Nov. 5, 1937, daughter of Adrian and Clara VanWinkle DeRue in Geneva. She worked for many years at Abbey Industries in Hopewell. She was a member of St. Francis Church in Phelps. Barbara is survived by her aunt, Nellie Boyko of Newark; uncle, Isaac (Martha) DeRue of Newark; many cousins, including Carrie Norrison of Newark, Mary (Gregory) MacLaren of Newark, John Boyko of California, and Diane (Gerald) Ellis of Newark; many friends in the Phelps and Syracuse area. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Fairville Cemetery.

Pipolo, Mary - Mary J. Pipolo, 91, of DeMay Living Center, died December 28, 2001. Mrs. Pipolo was born in Old Forge, Pennsylvania to Charles and Sabastiana Jandano. She was a sewing machine operator and had worked for B. Eherlic Co. in New York City for many years. In 1980, she moved from the Bronx to Newark to be near her son, Carl. She is survived by her sons, Carl (Micky) of Newark and Barbato (Madelline) of Fort Lauderdale, FL; five grandchildren and a great-grandson. Interment in St. Raymond's Cemetery in Bronx, New York.

Cook, Adelaide - Adelaide B. Cook, 93, of Lyons, formerly of Orleans, died December 29, 2001. Adelaide was born Jan. 26, 1908 in Canandaigua, to Roy and Frances Gulvin Benson. She was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Boston, MA and a former member of the Orleans Baptist Church, where she played piano for many years. She is survived by nine children: Stanleigh (Rebecca) Cook of Clifton Springs, James (Rita) Cook of Clifton Springs, Edward (Vicci) Cook of Phelps, Burr (Vivian) Cook of Lyons, David (Carolyn) Cook of Buffalo, Gary (Kathy) Cook of Palmyra, John (Miriam) Cook of Rock Hill, SC, Mary Ann (Robert) Marshall of Austin, Texas, and Margaret Cook of Newark; 30 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy (Bernard) Fox of Canandaigua; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Stanleigh, in 1977, and by one granddaughter.

Leno, Marie - Marie E. Leno, 79, of Marion, died December 27, 2001. She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Donald; daughter, Donna (David) Crane of Penfield; sons, Timothy (Shirley) Leno of Marion, and Paul Leno of Medina; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. She was a life-long member of the Second Reformed Church, where she taught Sunday School for 60 years. Interment will be in Marion Cemetery.

Sigsbee, Faith - Faith A. Sigsbee, 87, of Newark, died December 20, 2001 at Clifton Springs Hospital. Faith was born Feb. 3, 1914 in Macedon, to Jacob and Louise Pratt Youngman. She was the Assistant Postmaster at the Macedon Post Office. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Wesley, who died in 1977. Burial will be in White Haven Memorial Park in Pittsford.

Hale, Edwin - Edwin Hale, 75, formerly of Palmyra, died December 29, 2001 in England. He is survived by his wife, Beryl Northrup-Hale of Clifton Springs; two sisters, Sheila (Fred) Howard and Margaret (Jeff) Lambert, both of England; daughter, Julia (Keith) Jackson of England; stepdaughters, Judy (Steve) Andrews of Newark and Wendy (Ed) VanNorman of Phoenix, NY; stepson, Jeff (Ann) Northrup of Lowell, Massachusetts, and several grandchildren.

Frey, Ruth - Ruth A. Kussie Frey, 84, died December 31, 2001. She was retired from the Williamson Central School District. She is survived by husband, George Frey; daughters, Linda (Larry) Hubright of Williamson, Judy (Sam) Carpenter of Lyons; daughter-in-law, Donna Frey of Middleport; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, Ernest Frey. Interment in Sunnyside Cemetery, Williamson.

Yackel, Ruth - Ruth Virginia Phelps Yackel, 83, of Lyons, died December 30, 2001. She was a 1941 (BA/ A&S) and 1947 (MS / A&S) graduate of the University of Rochester; she was a high school guidance counselor and English teacher at Rush and Webster High Schools. Ruth was predeceased by her husband, George Yackel. She is survived by a daughter, Ann (Jim) Neitzel of Quakertown, PA; sisters-in-law; several nieces, grandnieces and nephews.

DeMarco, Virginia - Virginia DeMarco, 73, of Stuart Avenue, Newark, died December 25, 2001 at Rochester General Hospital. Mrs. DeMarco was born February 3, 1928 in Clyde, to Vito and Madeline Marro Celso. She was a communicant of St. Michael's Church. She had worked in Newark for Celso Cleaners, Sarah Coventry, and Huober Business Machines. Interment in in Newark Cemetery. She is survived by her son, Joseph N. (Jeni) of Nunda; daughter, Nancy (Herman) Lamare of Manmouth, Maine; four granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bernard Celso of Newark and Anthony Celso of Clyde; six sisters, Emma Celso of Clyde, Margaret Grezzo of Las Vegas, Mary Pizzello of Canandaigua, Lou Companella of Los Angeles, Teresa Carpenter of Elmira Heights, and Lee Zappia of Newark; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph M., sister, Jane Sebastian, brothers, Ben, Rocco, Thomas and Richard Celso.

Northrup, Leon - Leon Northrup, 95, of Newark/Hornell, died December 19, 2001 at the DeMay Living Center. He was born July 12, 1906 in Hornell to Guy and Inez Wheeler Northrup. He is survived by two sisters Marie Griffin and Frances Emerson both of Hornell, also by nieces and nephews and friends. Interment, Hornell Rural Cemetery.

Dunlap, Roger - Roger F. Dunlap, 63, of Marion died December 21, 2001. Interment in Marion Cemetery. He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Patricia; sons, Roger (Colene) Dunlap of Palmyra, Steven Dunlap of Charlotte, NC; granddaughter; Katelyn Bruni; brother, Terry (Carol) Dunlap of East Rochester; one sister, Shirley (Dennis) Frederico of Newark.

Tavano, Paul - Paul J. Tavano, Jr., 57, of Lyons, died suddenly at home on December 22, 2001. Paul was born Oct. 3, 1944, in Lyons, to Paul and Mary Virgillo Tavano. He was employed at Mobil Chemical in Macedon for 38 years. He was a member of the Lyons Fire Department and a former member of the town of Lyons Ambulance. Interment, South Lyons Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Hornsby Tavano of Lyons; son, Paul III of Rochester; cousins, Frank, Donna and Patti of Lyons; mother-in-law, Marian Hornsby of Lyons. Paul was predeceased by his father, Paul Sr., in 1968 and by his mother, Mary, in 1995.

Cowan, Gerald - Gerald Cowan, 75, of Nyack, formerly of Newark/Geneva, died December 24, 2001 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern. Mr. Cowan was born in Geneva on August 17, 1926, son of Chauncey and Edna Skinner Cowan. During World War II, he served in the Army in Italy. He remained in a replacement depot, where he was active in amateur theatrics and entertainment of the GI's. Back home, he pursued his love of the theater, in 1951 earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in drama at Ithaca College. Jerry joined the faculty at the college and taught stage craft for several years. In 1959, he moved to New York City and Broadway, where he worked as a production electrician. To raise his family, they moved in 1969 to Nyack. He commuted to NYC to continue working at many Broadway Theaters. In his retirement, his interest in coin collecting got him started in his own coin and postcard business, which he operated for ten years. Also in his retirement, Jerry was active with the Rockland County Foster Grandparents program. Interment in Newark Cemetery. He is survived by two sons, David (Lisa) of Cumberland, Maine, Andrew (Kerry) of Port Jefferson Station, Long Island and a daughter, Susan (Thomas) Hawkins of Port Jervis; five grandchildren; sister, Jean (Robert) Young of Newark; and Aunt Helen (Archie) Archuleta of Geneva.

Newcombe, Dayton - Dayton L. Newcombe, 83, of Newark, died December 15, 2001 at Newark ViaHealth. Mr. Newcombe was born May 14, 1918 to Arthur and Inez Griffith Newcombe in Lisbon, NY. He owned and drove the first school bus for Newark School until the district centralized. He won a contest which established the name 'Sunset Farms.' Mr. Newcombe owned and raced three cars during his life. He also worked at the Gardinier Hotel in Newark. He was a member of Newark VFW and a past member of the Newark Masonic Lodge. The Marine Corps flag flew at the funeral home in honor of his service during WWII. Mr. Newcombe received the Purple Heart as a result of wounds received at Okinawa. He is survived by his son, Clark (Linda) Newcombe of Florida; daughters, Barb (Sam) Bartoletti, Gloria (Paul) Bixby and Elizabeth (Merle) Nye, all of Newark; 16 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; sisters, Phoebe Burnham and Eleanor Hale, both of Newark, and Ruth (Henry) Davies of Florida; dear friend, Sally Wiley of Newark; nieces and nephews. Mr. Newcombe was predeceased by his wife, Christine in 1990, and by son, Richard in April 2001, grandson, Mark in 1998, three brothers and three sisters. Interment with full military honors at Riverview Cemetery in Phelps.

Pollot, James - James A. Pollot Sr., 72, of Palmyra, died unexpectedly on December 15, 2001. He was predeceased by his wife Betty. He is survived by his sons, James (Robin) Pollot, Mark (Mary) Pollot, Brian (Linda) Pollot, David (Donna) Pollot; nine grandchildren; sisters, Arloa Pollot, Barbara Santell; nieces and nephews. Interment in St. Anne's Cemetery, Palmyra.

Crescibene, Joseph - Joseph Crescibene, 82, of Newark, died December 14, 2001. He was born April 1, 1919 in Italy to Carlo and Rose De Rosa Crescibene. He was a communicant of St. Michael Church in Newark. He worked for many years at Stott's Dry Cleaners. Interment is in Newark Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Angelina; sister, Edith Crescibene of Newark; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Henry and a sister, Sara Valvano.

Youells, Bernice - Bernice I. Youells, 74, of Wolcott, died December 16, 2001 at Blossom View Nursing Home in Sodus. Interment in Fairville Cemetery. She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond in 1991. She is survived by four sons, Arthur Walsh of Canandaigua, Eric (Penny) Youells of Victory, Ronald (Susan) Youells of North Rose and Charles (Betty) Youells of North Rose; 5 daughters, Brenda (Pete) Drake of Gouverneur, Jimmie Lou Casselman of Deland, FL, Belita (Wayne) Homan of Wolcott, Linda Holtby of Geneva and Melissa (Richard) French of Wolcott; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Norris, Franklin - Franklin L. Norris, Sr., 62, of Clyde, died December 16, 2001 at Newark ViaHealth, following a brief illness. Interment in Huron Evergreen Cemetery in Wolcott. Mr. Norris was born July 11, 1939 in Wolcott, son of Richard and Charlotte Shove Norris. He had been a longtime employee of the Hemingway Co. in Clyde, and worked for LSW Industries in Clyde. He is survived by his wife, Emily (Cushman) Norris of Clyde; two daughters, Tina (Winfield) Crocker of Wolcott and Caroline Norris of Idaho; two sons, Franklin (Nancy) Norris Jr. of Duncannon, PA, and Michael (Caroline) Norris of Newark; two brothers, Richard (Irene) Norris of Lyons and Jack (Judy) Norris of Wolcott; four sisters, Francis Gary of Clyde, Frieda Petrus of Clyde, Leona (Michael) Stirpe of Clyde and Joyce (Gordon) Everdyke of Florida; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Austin, Eliza - Eliza T. Austin, 93, died December 15, 2001 at the Ontario County Health Facility in Hopewell, where she has been a resident since 1992. Eliza was born in East Bloomfield on November 3, 1908 to Oliver and Mary Cooper Paddock. She had been active at the Clark Manor Nursing Home and with Meals on Wheels. She is the widow of Robert Austin. She is survived by a sister Constance Paddock of Sanford, FL, nieces and nephews. Interment in Pittsford.

Atkinson, Esther - Esther Mary Clapton Atkinson, 75, of Phelps, died on Dec. 18, 2001 at Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic. She was born Jan. 24, 1926 in Clifton Springs, to William 'Harry' and Leora Dickenson Clapton. She had worked for the Clifton Springs Sanitarium, Clearplas and at Sarah Conventry. Mrs. Atkinson was a member of the First Baptist Church in Clifton Springs, past president and life member of the Geneva VFW Ladies Auxiliary, former Cub Scout Den Mother and softball coach in Phelps. She was an avid bowler and card player, a diehard New York Yankees fan and a World Wrestling Federation fan. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Richard F. Atkinson Sr.; children, James Michael Atkinson of Clyde, Deborah (Norman) Rugg of Dresden, Richard F. (Cindy) Atkinson Jr. of Phelps, Jeffrey Atkinson of, Dresden, Cheryl (Daren) Hamond of Phelps and Terry (Paula) Atkinson of Phelps; 21 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Bob Clapton of Clifton Springs, David R. Kesel of Clifton Springs, Emerson (Doris) Garling of Ohio, Betty (Frank) Palermo of Newark and Marie Harloff of Florida; special friends, Richard T. Salerno of Clyde and Stephen Simmons of Clyde; almost adopted son, Douglas Smith of Geneva; nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her sister, Dorothy Call; and her brother, William Kesel.

DePauw, Ella - Ella J. DePauw, 77, of Newark, died December 10, 2001 at Newark ViaHealth. Ella was born Feb. 4, 1924 in Dublin, the daughter of Victor and Elizabeth Donahue DePauw. She was a communicate of St. Michael's Church, where she was a member of its Rosary and Altar Society, and the Legion of Mary. She was a secretary for many years with C.H. Stuart and then the Wayne County Department of Building and Grounds. She is survived by her three sisters, Pauline Troke of Lyons, Louise Perkins of Newark and Elizabeth Farrell of Rochester; brother, Raymond J. DePauw of Newark; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Victor and Richard DePauw. Interment is in Newark Cemetery.

Wrench, Willa - Willa Elaine Wrench, 80, formerly of Newark, died December 4, 2001 in Pinehurst, NC. She was a duplicate bridge player, active in her church, and served as past president of Church Women United in Moore County, North Carolina. She was past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star in Newark, and in Southern Pines, NC. A memorial service was held in Aberdeen, NC. Mrs. Wrench was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Allyn. She is survived by two daughters, Janet Zilinski of Massachusetts and Linda French, Kansas City, MO; a son, Thomas Wrench, Oklahoma City, OK; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Goellner-Spear, Alice - Alice Goellner-Spear, 91, of Port Gibson and Florida, died November 8, 2001 in Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton, FL after a short illness. She retired from the state hospital in Rochester in the early 1970's. She was a past matron of the Eastern Star. She was predeceased by her husband, Edwin (Wally) Spear; her sisters, Ann Schumm and Margaret Bedette; brothers, Fred, John, Ludwig and Henry Goellner. She is survived by one brother, Dr. Karl E. Goellner of Wisconsin and many nieces and nephews. Interment in Port Gibson Cemetery.

Fisher, Gladys - Gladys C. Fisher, 93, of Clifton Springs, died December 8, 2001 at the Clifton Springs Hospital nursing home. Interment in Resthaven Cemetery in Phelps. Gladys was born February 19, 1908 in Phelps, to Edward and Eva Eighmey Overslaugh, and resided in Phelps her entire life. In 1965, Gladys became the volunteer dispatcher for the Phelps Fire Department. She contributed in this position for 27 years, operating the station from her home at 3 Eagle St., Phelps, where all calls were received and recorded, and equipment was dispatched. She is survived by daughters, Geraldine 'Gerry' (Charles) VerStraete, Janet (F. Lee) Walters; and her son, Gary (Gloria) Fisher, all of Phelps; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased in 1993 by her husband of 67 years, Eugene; her brothers, Elmer and Laverne Overslaugh; and sisters, Ardell Wickum and Margaret Nayaert.

Sculli, Ann - Ann R. Sculli, of Lyons, died December 11, 2001. She was born in Lyons to Michael and Mary Messina Morocco. She worked for the Village of Lyons and was assistant librarian at the local library. She also worked for Social Services and was a substitute teacher at St. Michael School in Newark. Ann graduated from Lyons High School and received a Bachelor's degree in English and Master's in psychology from Nazareth College. She worked at the election polls for more than 40 years. She is survived by three daughters, Victoria S. Miller of Lyons, Marie (William) DeWolf of Greenville, PA, and Patricia (David) Alena of Lyons; sons, Nicholas (Lynne) of Farmington and John M. of Canandaigua; sister, Mary Abraham of Auburn; several grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Nicholas in 1980. Interment, Elmwood Cemetery.

Derks, Robert - Robert A. Derks, 69, of Newark, died November 30, 2001 at the Clifton Springs Hospital. Mr. Derks was born October 27, 1932 in Williamson, son of Abram and Dorothy Cliff Derks. He was a recreational therapist with the Newark Developmental Center for more than 30 years, retiring in 1988. Bob was an avid golfer and a long-time member of the Wayne Hills Country Club. Mackiewicz, Charles - Charles Allen Mackiewicz, of Newark, died November 23, 2001 at Forrest Memorial Hospital in Hattiesburg, MI. He was born in Palo Alto, California.

Bouwens, Nancy - Nancy K. Bouwens, 63, of Orange City, Florida, died November 28, 2001. She was born in Rochester, and moved to this area from Lauderhill, FL in 1980. She was a retired manager for a trucking company, a member of Community United Methodist Church in DeBary, FL, where she helped with finance, stewardship, United Methodist Women and the Prayer Chain, was a member of the choir and former choir director. She is survived by her husband, William; sons, Randy of Bloomfield, David of Plantation, FL, Mark, of Boca Raton, FL, and James, of Oviedo, FL; 6 granddaughters; and a brother, Donald Wallace, of Canandaigua.

Barry, Edna - Edna Barry, 89, of Newark/Walworth died November 30, 2001 at ViaHealth Newark. Interment, East Palmyra Cemetery. Edna was born August 14, 1912 to Leo and Anna Barry. She came to Newark in 1935, enjoyed music and singing, could identify individuals by their jewelry, and was involved with the Association For The Blind.

Lester, Ruby - Ruby A. Lester, 89, a resident of the Wayne County Nursing Home since 1992, died November 29, 2001. Ruby was born December 22, 1911 in Ringo, Nebraska, daughter of the late George and Phoebe Lamb Allen. She was the owner and operator of the Lester Taxi Service in Lyons. She is survived by her three sons, Bruce (Pat) Lester of Fair Haven, Rodney Lester of Newark, and Gary (Dolly) Lester of Lyons; four daughters, Patricia (Harold) Fisher of Lyons, Linda Tuffy of Lyons, Judy (Robert) Cook of Hudson Falls, and Alice (Armando) Crespo of Newark; 23 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; a sister, Golda Helmer of Montezuma. She was predeceased by her husband, Hulon, in 1977; by two sons, Hulon Jr. and Durward; and a grandson, John.

Mierke, Carl - Carl E. Mierke, 89, resident of the Wayne County Nursing Home since 1999, died Nov. 28, 2001. Carl was born March 5, 1912 in Lyons, to Edward and Jessie Pruner Mierke. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, and was a life member of the B.P.O.E. Elks 869 Lodge in Lyons for more than 45 years. Carl retired from Seneca Foods in Newark as an electrician and head maintenance man. Carl is survived by his wife, Carolyn Tellier Mierke of Lyons; son, Ralph (Nancy) of Florida; daughter, Corrine (Richard) Kleisle of Lyons; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Alice Brewer of Clifton Springs. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Harold Mierke. Interment, Elmwood Cemetery in Lyons.

Bush, Alan - Alan W. Bush, 17, died December 2, 2001 as the result of a car accident. Interment in Port Gibson Cemetery. Alan was born on January 26, 1984 in Newark, to Richard A. and Tricia E. (Arthurton) Bush. He attended Palrnyra-Macedon High School where he was a member of the Junior Class. Alan was a member of the Port Gibson United Methodist Church and an avid hunter and fisherman. Alan is survived by his parents Richard A. and Tricia Bush of Palmyra; sister, Jessica (Jon) Thomas of Florida; maternal grandmother Barbara Arthurton of Oklahoma; paternal grandparents, William and Doris Bush of Port Gibson; maternal great-grandmother, Addie DeVuyst; niece, Amanda; nephews, Dylan and Brandon; many close friends, relatives and special companion, Megan Farmer. Wunder, Otto - Otto T. Wunder, 81, of Lyons, died December 4, 2001. He was a retiree of Eastman Kodak, where he worked for more than 40 years. Walter, Priscilla - Priscilla Condit Walter, 54, of Gulfport, Florida and formerly of Newark, died November 25, 2001 at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. She was born in Clifton Springs, graduated from Newark High School in 1965, and attended Brockport State University. She was a respected friend and colleague to many, many people. One happy memory was returning last year to Newark to show her son, Kevin, where she was raised, and attending her 35-year high school reunion at Newark. She is survived by her husband of 27 years, John, of Gulfport; sons, Aaron and Kevin, in Gulfport; her mother, Jean Condit, of Town Shores Condominiums (Gulfport) and Newark; her brother, Tom Condit, of New Albany, IN. She moved from Rochester to Florida in 1973. She was a Realtor with R.W. Caldwell Realty, Gulfport, and served as assistant to the corporation president since 1988. She was trained in hairdressing in Rochester and London, England and worked as a hairdresser at the downtown St. Petersburg, Maas Brothers department store from 1973-88.

Almodovar, Katyria - Katyria Almodovar, 12, of Mobile Parkway, Newark, died November 26, 2001 at Strong Memorial Hospital, in Rochester. Katyria was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico, October 30, 1989, daughter of Sory Torres and Angel Almodovar. She was in fifth grade at Kelley School in Newark. She attended St. Michael's Church. Interment in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico. She is survived by her parents; her grandmother, Iluminada Massas; aunts, uncle and cousins in Puerto Rico.

East, Roger - Roger N. East, Sr., 76, of Palmyra, died November 24, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Jean; sons, James (Carole), Timmy, Roger (Delores), Thomas (Candy), Michael; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother, Raymond East; nieces and nephews.

Bean, Robert - Robert C. Bean Sr., 61, of Lyons, died November 23, 2001 in Alden, Erie County. He was born December 20, 1939, in Auburn to Clinton and Vada Wells Bean. He worked for 20 years for Whitehall Plywood in Whitehall, Vermont. He was a millwright at Garlock Co. in Palmyra, and worked for Fold-Pak Corp. in Newark. He served in the Navy during the Korean War. Robert is survived by four sons: Scott Robert of Martville, Robert Jr. of Wolcott, Raymond of Norman, OK, and Shawn Robert of Rutland, VT; sister, Donna Marie Buttaccio of Lyons; five grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Pullen, Winifred - Winifred 'Winnie' Lucille Pullen, 83 of Welcher Road, Newark died Monday, November 26, 2001. Winnie was born August 13, 1918 in Sodus, to Raymond and Ethel Warner Smith. She graduated from Newark High School in 1935, was a devoted wife and mother. Winnie loved animals and took in many stray pets over her life time. She and her husband John owned and operated the Pullen Auto Parts on Welcher Road for many years. Interment, Fairville Cemetery. Winnie is survived by her daughter, Norma (Irvin) McIntyre of Newark; sons, Ronald and his friend Jamie, and Daniel (Kim) Pullen, both of Newark; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; sister, Sharon (Ron) Sochia of Newark; brother, Ernest (Hilda) Smith of Newark; sisters-in-law, June Smith and Betty Smith; brother-in-law Richard Cole. Wunder, Harold - Harold F. Wunder, 69, of Sodus, died November 23, 2001. Harold was born in Lyons, the only son of Mabel and Fred Wunder. He married Janet VanDerzille of Sodus on August 22, 1953. He retired in 1991 after 30 years of service at the Wayne Co. Highway Dept. as a foreman. He served as Sodus Town Councilman for 12 years, and was a principle figure in restoring the Wallington Cobblestone Schoolhouse and in preserving the rustic beauty and heritage of the Red Brick Church and grounds in Sodus Center. Interment in Baptist Rural Cemetery, Sodus Center. Harold is survived by Janet Wunder, his wife of 48 years; son, Dale Wunder of West Virginia; daughter, Deborah (Daniel) Miller of West Virginia; a grandson; sisters, Doris (Robert) Smith of Newark, Shirley (Lloyd) Howell of Port Gibson and Alice Barclay of Sodus; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

Mittak, George - George M. Mittak, 57, of Lyons/Alloway, died suddenly November 24, 2001. George was born April 13, 1944 in Manhattan, son to Paul and Catherine Salony-Mittak. He was employed in Geneva at Cornell University as a plant researcher. He was a member of the Mid-Atlantic Koi Club. He is survived by his mother, Catherine Salony-Mittak of Lyons; two sisters, Marilyn (Richard) Puls of Lyons and Catherine (Robert) Harris of Phelps; two brothers Paul (Micheline) Mittak of Waterloo and William (Barbara) Mittak of Lyons; four nephews, Paul III, Richard Jr., Stephen and Robert III; four nieces; five great-nieces and great-nephews; Aunt Anna Salony of New Jersey; many friends. He was predeceased by his father, Paul, in 1983. Interment will be in South Lyons Cemetery.

Mertz, Martha - Martha A. Mertz, 96, of Palmyra, died November 26, 2001. Interment in Palmyra Cemetery.Martha was born July 24, 1905 in Palmyra, the youngest daughter of George and Mary Haas-Mertz. Martha graduated from Brockport State Teachers College and taught in one-room rural schools and in Seneca Falls Schools until she retired in 1973, having taught for 47 years. Martha was a lifelong member of Palmyra Western Presbyterian Church. She was a member of Seneca and Wayne Retired Teachers Associations, Palmyra Order of Eastern Star, Palmyra Kings Daughters, and Palmyra and Macedon Senior Citizens. She was an avid gardener and liked to read, sew and bake. After retirement she grew many gladiolus. She will long be remembered by her love and devotion to her family. She is survived by one niece, Margaret Mertz-Siler of Newark and two nephews, Clifford and Donald Mertz of Palmyra. Martha was predeceased by her parents, brother Charles and sister Clara.

Russell, Franklin, Sr. - Franklin T. Russell, Sr., 92, of Newark died November 15, 2001 at Clifton Springs Hospital. Mr. Russell was born to Elijah T. and Lulu Taylor Russell on September 24, 1909 in Millbrook, NY. He married Helen Fordon on June 24, 1933. He was the District Manager for Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. Mr. Russell had a special interest in trains and theater organs. He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Newark and was the former treasurer; he belonged to RSVP, American Cancer Society, Newark Rotary, Newark-Arcadia Volunteer Ambulance, where he served as Office Manager; Newark Chamber of Commerce (former manager); SCORE (S.B.A.); he served on the Wayne County Rehabilitation Program for 18 months; and NDC Resident Training For Jobs for 14 months. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, the Hon. Franklin T. and Cynthia Russell of Newark; daughter and son-in-law, the Hon. Barbara and Richard Garrett of Tully; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Helen on November 21, 1999 and his twin brother, Randolph Russell. Interment will be at Glenwood Cemetery, Geneva.

Williams, Leona - Leona Williams, 94, of Newark, died November 17, 2001 at the Wayne County Nursing Home. Leona was born October 26, 1907 in Marion, daughter of Abraham and Clara Shearns Bobine. She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Williams of Newark, and was predeceased by her husband, Edward, in 1981. Interment in East Newark Cemetery.

Dailey, Gerald - Gerald W. Dailey, 76, of Marion, died November 14, 2001. He was a life member of the First Baptist Church of Williamson. Interment is in Ridge Chapel Cemetery. Gerald is survived by his wife of 51 years, Evelyn (Seymour) Dailey; daughters, Gail (Oscar) Mojica of Newark, Rita (Noel) Kessler of Macedon, Debbie (Natividad) Cruz of Beaver Dam, NY; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren.

Casler, Philip - Philip John Casler, 29, died November 19, 2001. Philip was born in Sodus on July 13, 1972 to Philip L. and Dale Tyler-Casler. He graduated in 1992 from North High School, in Terra Haute, Indiana. He had attended Newark schools. He was a framer for K-B Construction in Canandaigua. He is survived by his fiancee, Jessica Douglas; his son Camron, and a child to be born in April; by his parents Philip L. Casler of Indiana and Dale Casler of Newark. Bitler, Forrester - Forrester 'Bud' F. Bitler, 85, of Sodus, died November 20, 2001 at Blossom View Nursing Home, Sodus. He was a retired carpenter. John was born June, 26 1922 in Clyde, to Joseph and Mary Di-Santo-DeLisio. On January 16, 1954, he married his second wife the former Irene Stearns. He was a lifetime resident of Clyde, member of the Clyde-Savannah School Board and had retired from Local Union 13 - Steamfitters. He is survived by his wife, Irene; one son, Randy (Mary) DeLisio of Clyde; four daughters, Loreena (Ron) Dembinski of Jacksonville FL, Elena (Frank) LaPlaca of Williamson, Krista (Jim) Phillips of Clyde and Yvonne (Scott) Phelps of Savannah; two brothers, Anthony (Josie) DeLisio and Leonard (Jewel) DeLisio both of Clyde; two sisters, Rosie (Tommy) Critelli of Newark and Delores (Art) Paradise of Camillus; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Hillageer, Rene - Rene A. Hillageer, 87, of Marbletown/Newark, died November 4, 2001 at the Wayne County Nursing Home. Interment in the Newark Cemetery. Rene was born March 14, 1914 in Williamson to Camiel and Matilda Calaus Hillageer. He retired from Sarah Coventry, where he worked in the maintenance department. He was a member of St. Michael Church in Newark, Elks Lodge #1249 and the Newark Volunteer Fire Dept., Deluge Hose Co. #1, which he joined on October 1, 1942. Rene is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Hillageer; daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Donald Buck of South Carolina; step-sons, James (Virginia) Graf of Webster, Charles (Susan) Graf of Chicago and Steven (Paulette) Graf of Georgia; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; sister, Clara VanEenaeme of Newark; and three nieces. Rene was predeceased in 1976 by his first wife, Pauline.

Caraballo, Patricia - Patricia S. Caraballo, 63, of Newark, died October 31, 2001 at Geneva General Hospital. Patricia was born Feb. 16, 1938 in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, to Charles and Polly Mae Prater Orsborne. She had worked for 20 years at C.H. Stuart Co. and for Jackson & Perkins Co. She was a member of the Newark Church of God. Interment is in Fairville Cemetery. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Pablo; one son, Paul (JoAnn) of Newark; two daughters, Sarah (Angel) Ubiles and Sue Ellen Saez of Newark; nine grandchildren; four sisters, Janet West, Margaret DeRossett, Billie Jo Heers and Lisa Ippolito; one brother, Walter Orsborne; nieces and nephews. Acker, William - William G. 'Peanut' Acker, 78, of North Rose, died November 1, 2001. He was born November 9, 1922 in Rose, to William H. and Kathryn (Saterlee) Acker. Peanut was a past member of the North Rose Fire Dept., Clyde VFW, and American Legions in Fair Haven and Phelps. He was a member of the Wayne County Humane Society. He is survived by daughters, Loral 'Lorie' Acker of Phelps, and Darlene Moore of Newark; one son, Clinton G. Acker of North Rose; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Edna Downing of Bath; one niece; and a friend, Sarge. Peanut was predeceased by his brother, George Acker; grandson, Alexander Clinton Acker; and brother-in-law, Ray Downing.

Dailey, Edwin - Edwin L. Dailey, 73, of Manchester died November 2, 2001. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 26 years. He was employed at the NYS Dept. of Labor until his retirement in 1994. He was a member of Canandaigua American Legion, Newark Elks Lodge, Blue Knights, and other local, state and national organizations. Interment in Fairfield Cemetery, Spencerport. He is survived by his wife, Christine (Pierce) Dailey; daughter, Debra Dailey; three sisters, Shirley (Clifford) Robinson, Patricia (Russell) Tripoli, and Marlene (Fred) Campbell; a sister-in-law; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two sons, David Dailey in 1967, and Daniel Dailey in 1980.

Muto, Carol - Carol Muto, 44, of Penfield, formerly of Lyons, died November 2, 2001 at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester. Carol was born in Lyons on January 11, 1957, to Dominic and Grace Young Muto. She was a social worker and counselor for Monroe County BOCES. She was a graduate of Lyons High School and Nazareth College, and she received her master's degree in social work from Syracuse University. Interment in South Lyons Cemetery. She was predeceased by her brother, Anthony in 1976; her niece, Amanda Grace Leoni in August 1998; her aunt, Rose Marie Muto in December 2000; and her mother, Grace in September 2001.

Bowler, Marion (Brust) - Marion Brust Bowler, 89, of Lyons and Blossom View Nursing Home in Sodus, died Nov. 4, 2001 after a courageous battle with cancer. Interment in Lyons Rural Cemetery. She is survived by her son, Norman (Gail) Brust of Newark; granddaughter, Arden Brust of Newark; and many friends. She was predeceased by her husbands, Norman Brust and Archie Bowler; and a sister, Loretta Benedict.

Singer, Harry - Harry O. Singer, 62, of Newark/Lyons, and St. Augustine, FL, died November 2, 2001. Interment in East Newark Cemetery. Harry was born in Rochester to Herbert and Marguerite Bigelow Singer. He was a maintenance worker at the St. John's RV Park in St. Augustine, FL. He is survived by his mother, Marguerite O'Herron of Rochester; children, Audrey Van Dusen of Newark, Paul Singer of Lyons, Terri Lisai of Rochester, Russell Singer of Oneida, Gary Singer of Romulus; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his brother, John O'Herron of Rochester; sisters, Marguerite Thorne of Rochester and Joan Barry of Tennessee. He was predeceased by a son, Harry O. Singer, Jr.

Taber, James - James E. Taber, 74, of Sodus, died of a heart attack at home on November 5, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; children, Jamie (Steven) Montemorano of Clyde, Steven (Doris) Bates of Sodus, and (Bonnie) Bates of Clyde; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Lucille (Paul) Jones of Schroon Lake, and Marion Taber of Clyde; brother, Gilbert (Ann) Taber of Clyde; several nieces and nephews.

Fowles, Joan - Joan G. Fowles, 80, of South Main St., Newark, died October 23, 2001 at F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua. Joan was born March 9, 1921, in Upton Wirral, England, the daughter of Jesse and Ada Roberts, and had lived in the United States since 1962 in the Fairport, Clifton Springs and Newark areas. She is survived by her children, Rodney (Cindy) Fowles of Pottsville, PA, Peter (Charlotte) Fowles of Clifton Springs, and Judith (Barry) Beach of Clifton Springs; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and brother, George (Hilary) Roberts of England. She was predeceased in 1979 by her husband, Philip.

Shirtz, Malcolm - Malcolm G. Shirtz, 75, of Sodus Point, died at his home on October 25, 2001. Malcolm was the former police chief and justice of Sodus Point. Interment in Sodus Rural Cemetery. He is survived by Jean, his wife of 47 years; two daughters, Wendy (Robert) Finn of Oswego, and Laurie (Chris) Fannon of MI; four grandchildren; brother, Frank (Emma Jean) Shirtz of Sodus Point; nieces and nephews.

John Reeves - John Reeves, 84, of Florida, died October 8, 2001. John was born January 28, 1917 in Arcadia, to Paul and Charlotte Reeves. John was a member of American Legion Post #286. He is survived by his sisters Charlotte Reeves of Newark and Martha of Lyons.

DeVoogt, Anna - Anna VanKouwenberg DeVoogt, 79, of Marion, died October 30, 2001. Interment will be held in Marion Cemetery. Anna is survived by her husband, James DeVoogt; daughters, Gloria (Roy) Huling of Phelps, June (Charles) VerPlank of Marion, Diane (James) Richardson of Lyons, and Cynthia (Ralph) Minnick of Smithburg, MD; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; sisters, Cornelia (Arthur) Fagner of Newark, Josie DeFisher of Sodus, and Elizabeth (Ralph) Everdyke of Newark; brothers, Adrian (Evelyn) VanKouwenberg of Rose, Howard (Betty) VanKouwenberg of FL, and Donald (Jean) VanKouwenberg of Newark; sister-in-law, Jeanette VanKouwenberg of Marion; brothers-in-law, Raymond Spade of Newark, Raymond Anderson of Marion; nieces and nephews.

DeWispelaere, Madelene - Madelene M. DeWispelaere, 82, of Lyons/Newark, died October 29, 2001 at Clifton Springs Hospital. Madelene was born the daughter of John and Ida Geldorf Timmerman on March 1, 1919 in Walworth. She graduated from Marion High School in 1936. She retired from Newark Developmental Center in 1984 where she first worked as a ward aide and then as a seamstress. For many years she attended the Arcadia Reformed Church then on East Avenue in Newark. Madelene was a member of the Top of the Hill Retirees and the Newark American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed sewing, ceramics, crocheting, jigsaw puzzles, reading and, most of all, working in her flower garden. Interment, East Newark Cemetery. Madelene is survived by her loving husband, William DeWispelaere; sons, Raymond Fisher of Lyons, Gorden (Marsha Lutes) Fisher of Clifton Springs, William (Cathy Kotvis) DeWispelaere of Wolcott and Dennis DeWispelaere of Newark; daughters, Phyllis (Richard) Hochbruckner of Palmyra and Linda (James) Christensen of Rushville; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; sister, Virginia Tinunerman (Robert) Ritter of Texas; nieces and nephews. Madeline was predeceased by her sisters, Marie DeCracker, Joahnna Bouwens and Julia Peer.

Simmons, Xander - Xander C. Simmons, newborn, died October 30, 2001 at Via Health Newark. Xander was the daughter of Kevin Simmons and Julie Danforth, born October 30, 2001 in Newark. Interment, White Church Cemetery in Lisbon, NY. Hoad, Gerald - Gerald Hoad, 61, of Palmyra, died October 18, 2001 in Clifton Springs Hospital. Gerald was born in Savannah on July 13, 1940, to Dorson and Arlene Wells Hoad. He was married to the former Donna Fratangelo on August 19, 1961 at St. John's Church in Clyde. Gerald was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6778 and James R. Hickey Post #120 of the American Legion, and the Lyons Rod and Gun Club. The funeral home flew the United States Marine Corps flag in honor of Gerald's military service. Gerry is survived by his wife, Donna; daughters, Kim (Stephen) Kotlarsz of Hendersonville, TN and Kelly (Robert) Ide of Marbletown; four grandchildren; beloved companion, Judy Aikens; brother Dick Hoad; sister, Janet Williams; close friends, nieces and nephews. Interment in Palmyra Cemetery.

Allen, Duane F. 'Whitey' - Duane F. 'Whitey' Allen of Newark, died Monday, October 22, 2001, after a courageous struggle with cancer. Even the best Marines sometimes lose a battle when they have no reserves to call on, but his loved ones know Duane has ultimately won the war and is now in God's kingdom. Private entombment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Geneva. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; his son, Jeffrey (Amy); his granddaughter, Jennifer; his 'brothers' Gene (Marie) Palmer of Lyons, and Fred (Mary) Palmer of Florida; nephews, Robert (Jody) Holland of Canandaigua and Jerry (Sue) Lanse of Newark; aunts, Helena Rahn of Lyons and Janet Bullock of Illinois; and many, many special friends. Duane's strength, courage, thoughtfulness, and sense of humor are an inspiration to his loved ones. They will never forget the love he gave them and his memory will forever be in their hearts.

Arnitz, Anthony J. Sr. - Anthony J. Arnitz Sr., 76, of Clyde, died Friday, October 19, 2001 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Anthony was a life-long resident of Clyde, and a 50-year member of the Clyde Volunteer Fire Department where he was instrumental in founding the Clyde Women's Auxiliary. He was a member of St. John's Church and the Holy Name Society of St.John's. Tony was proprietor of Mia's Ice Cream in Clyde since 1988. Entombment in St. John's Mausoleum. Anthony is survived by his wife, Pauline Josephine 'Jo' Arnitz; sons, Anthony Jr. (Dianne) of Bloomfield, and John (Beth) of Clyde; daughter, Paula Arnitz of Clyde; grandchildren, Anthony J. III, Tonya, Kelly, Neal, Jessica, Matthew and Ian; sisters, Mary Valerio of Newark, Anna Cinelli of Clyde; sisters-in-law, Josephine Arnitz of Lyons, Mary Arnitz of Clyde and Sally Colarocco of Newark; and many close friends. He was predeceased by his brothers, Gus, Joseph and Peter Arnitz.

Zaso, Margaret E. - Margaret E. Zaso, 84, of Dunn Rd., Lyons, died suddenly on Saturday, October 20, 2001 in Bath. Margaret was born July 1, 1917, the daughter of the late Edward and Belle Schendel. She retired from National Biscuit Co. and was a homemaker in her later years. She was a member of St. Michael's Church, Lyons. Interment in South Lyons Cemetery. Margaret is survived by her daughter, Elaine (Phil) Romano of Lyons; five grandchildren, Finny (Tony) Gallo of Scottsville, Jeanee (Prodromas Konstantinou) Romano of Ontario, Philip Romano Jr. of Lyons, Michelle (Rob) Wadhams of Lyons and Eugene (Joanne) Palmer Jr. of Newark; three great-grandchildren, Shirley (John) McMillian and Heath and Robbi Wadhams, all of Lyons; sister, Frances Young of Phelps; brother, Elmer (Alice) Schendel of Waterloo; her very dearest friends, Lawrence and Mary Jean Smith and family of Clyde, and Charles and Marcia Romano and family of Rose. Adams, Shirley C. - Shirley C. Adams of Newark, age 66, died Sunday, October 21, 2001 at the House of John in Clifton Springs. Shirley was born December 20, 1934 in Marion. She worked for 20 years at Sybron in Henrietta in data processing, retiring in 1998. Shirley enjoyed working, cooking and was a devoted wife and mother. Interment in Fairville Cemetery. Shirley is survived by her husband, Maurice Adams; son, Lance (Jane Ann) Adams of Newark; daughters, Christine (Jon) Verkey of Newark, Lori (James) Jones of Palmyra, and Coleen Adams of Newark, her mother, Susie Cauwels; ten grandchildren; brother, Ronald Canwels of Clifton Springs; sisters, JoAnn (Charles) Tange of Texas and Delores (Richard) Siler of Newark; many nieces and nephews.

Cady, Merton - Merton Cady of Sodus, age 85, died Tuesday, October 23, 2001. Pearson, Debora - Debora G. Pearson, 45, of Clifton Springs, died October 12, 2001 at Clifton Springs Hospital. Debora was born November 23, 1955 in Lyons, to Leona Betty Stratton. She was employed at IEC Electronics in Newark. She enjoyed crafts. Debora is survived by a son Joshua F. of Clifton Springs; one sister Roxann (Michael) Buell of Phelps; three nieces; and two nephews. She was predeceased by her mother, Leona Betty Stratton in 1992; and brother, John C. (Brozey) Stratton, in 1996. Interment was followed at the Melvin Hill Cemetery.

Wunder, Henry Jr. - Henry Wunder Jr., 97, of Arcadia, died October 12, 2001 at the Wayne County Nursing Home. Henry was born August 29, 1904, in Lyons to Henry and Helen Luke Wunder, Sr. He was a farmer and worked in the Newark Hospital maintenance department, retiring in 1969. Henry is survived by his daughter Shirley (Richard) DeCook of Lyons, and several cousins. He was predeceased by his first wife, Anna Brennessel in 1959; and his second wife, Clara in 1997. Interment in South Lyons Cemetery.

Elliott, Earl - Earl C. Elliott, 82, of Newark, died October 12, 2001. He is survived by his sons, Ronald (Bobbie) of Newark, Douglas (Beverly) of Lyons and Gerald (Donna) of Lyons; a daughter, Elaine (Bernard) Devlin of Lyons; brother, Howard of Palmyra; sister, Evelyn Baker of Port Gibson; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; nieces and nephews. Earl was predeceased by his brother, Claude, and a sister, Pearl Schutt.

Crandall, Donald - Donald B. Crandall, 54, of Sodus, died October 10, 2001. Donald was a Veteran of the Vietnam Era, a retiree from Rochester Gas & Electric, member of the Sodus American Legion and the Palmyra Moose. He is survived by Donna, his wife of 33 years; sons, Daniel (Robin) Crandall of Marion, David (Elisa) Crandall of Ontario; foster son, David C. Crandall of Sodus; three grandchildren; his mother, Elinore Crandall of Rochester; sister, Laurel (Eugene) Albrecht of Jackson, MS; brother-in-law, James Peters of Fairport; nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Donald was predeceased by his father, Lawrence Crandall and sister, Adrienne Peters. Interment at Lake View Cemetery in Pultneyville.

Purdy, Harriet - Harriet Purdy (Avery), 87, of North Rose, died October 15, 2001 at the Pines of Peace Home in Ontario. Harriet is survived by 4 children, Arlene (Al) Miraglia, formerly of Brockport, Arden (Lorna) Avery of NC, Keith (Gloria) Avery of Holley, Ella (David) Guthrie of North Rose; 4 step-children, Charles (Janice) Purdy of Lyons, Joyce (Larry) Plyter of Williamson, Nancy Washburn of Clyde, Leon F. Purdy of Newark; sister, Rena (Walter) Richardson of Westbury; 37 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Harriet was predeceased by her son, Glen Avery in 1983. Interment in Huron Evergreen Cemetery.

Brown, Mae - Mae L. Brown, 87, of Williamson, died October 14, 2001. Mae was born Dec. 31, 1913 in Auburn to Clarence and Mabel Dutcher Rogers. She is survived by her children, Richard French and Patricia Edmonds, both of Ithaca; James Brown of Walla Walla, WA; Walter Brown of Sterling; Norma Brown of Newark; Polly DeBryne of Wolcott; 21 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. Mae was predeceased by her husband, Douglas W. Brown in 1976. Interment in Oakwood Cemetery, Penfield.

Richards, Homer - Homer C. 'Tiny' Richards, 89, of Marion, died October 16, 2001 in Rochester. He was a 44-year employee of Graflex Camera Company. He was predeceased by his wife, Lucille D. Richards. He is survived by sons, Charles (Donna) and Jack (Jo Ann); daughter, Elizabeth (Eugene) Soltero; grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Interment, Marion Cemetery.

Swan, Leroy - Leroy Swan, 83, died October 17, 2001 at Via Health of Newark. Reed, Dorothy Ann - Dorothy Ann 'Dottie' Reed, 71, of Newark, died October 10, 2001 at Rochester General Hospital. Dorothy was born in Newark on August 12, 1930, daughter of William and Mildred McKown Winans. She retired as a secretary for Eastman Kodak Co. of Newark; she had worked for C.H. Stuart Co. for 23 years. She was a member of Park Presbyterian Church and the Kountry Kousins Square Dance Club. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Gerald B.; daughter, Denise (Steven) Case of Newark; son, Gerald, Jr. of Newark; grandchildren, Kourtney and Sheldon; sister, Lois (Robert) Dence of FL; nieces and nephews.

Quinn, Lenabelle - Lenabelle Quinn, 87, a resident of the Wayne County Nursing Home, died October 2, 2001. Mrs. Quinn was born Nov. 18, 1913 in Port Byron, to Guy and Lena Hastings VanAntwerp. She was employed by NYSEG in Auburn and later by J.C. Penney in Newark. Inurnment in South Lyons Cemetery. She is survived by her three sons, Frank (Dottie), Larry and Michael, all of Lyons; two granddaughters, Tara Quinn of Chicago, IL and Shannon Quinn of Lyons; sister, Esther Goodwin of Weedsport; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank 'Duddy' in 1967; and two sisters, Dorothy Brouse and Leitha Ball.

Bushart, Howard - Howard L. Bushart, 82, of East Williamson, died October 7, 2001. Howard was a Veteran of WWII, a retiree from Garlock Inc. of Palmyra, member and past Elder of the Second Reformed Church of Marion, 54-year member of the Williamson American Legion, past County and Williamson Post Commander of the American Legion, NYS Legionnaire of the Year in 1985, member of the Newark VFW, 54-year member of the East Williamson Fire Dept. Interment in Marion Cemetery with military honors. Howard is survived by his wife of 55 years, Caroline (Clicquennoi) Bushart; daughters, Patricia (Gary) Dick of Williamson and Suzanne (C. Douglas) Whelan of Akron, NY; grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; brothers, Joe Bushart and Stanley (Isabelle) Bushart, of Marion; sisters-in-law, Mary N. Bushart of Sodus, Mary A. Bushart of Marion; nieces, nephews and friends.

Patton, Richard - Richard Thomas Patton, 96, of Newark, died October 4, 2001 at the Wayne County Nursing Home. Richard was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina on July 9, 1905, to Allan and Rose Mobley Patton. He was a steelworker at Carpenter Technology for more than 25 years in Bridgeport, CT. He was a chauffeur for many years. Richard is survived by his daughter, Carolyn White of Minneapolis; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sons, Richard Thomas Jr., John Archibald and Clarence; daughters, Betty Jane and Diana Dolores Patton; and his wife, Anna Mae Spencer.

Sampson, Charles - Charles H. Sampson, 80, of Sodus Point, died October 6, 2001. Interment in Sodus Rural Cemetery. Charles is survived by his daughter, Carol (Russell) Johnson of Sodus; sons, William (Dawn) of Farmington and Timothy (Alice) of Sodus; four granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth, November 16, 2000, and his daughter, Judith Ann Sampson.

Benitez, Augustin - Augustin Benitez, 57, of East Maple Ave., Newark, died October 10, 2001 at the DeMay Living Center. Mr. Benitez was born in Gurabo, Puerto Rico on September 10, 1944, son of Augustin and Marcela Benitez. He was a production worker at Hallagan Manufacturing in Newark. Interment in Newark Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Estelita; three brothers in Puerto Rico; two cousins; four step-children, Norma Heym, Vilma Bueso, Oscar Acosta and Luis Acosta; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Thaxton, Harold - Harold Thaxton, Jr., 55, of Newark/Williamson, died suddenly Tuesday, October 9, 2001 at Strong Memorial Hospital. Harold was born August 11, 1946 to Harold and Ethel Masatwski Thaxton in Dayton, Kentucky. He loved football and watching old John Wayne movies. Harold is survived by his brothers, Paul Thomas of Bergen and Ronald Thomas of Dundee; and friends at the Finger Lakes DDSO. Harold was predeceased by his mother Ethel Hollenbeck and step-father Ralph Hollenbeck. Interment at Hillside Cemetery in Dundee.

Hobkirk, Walter - The Rev. Walter R. Hobkirk, 88, died October 10, 2001 at the Clifton Springs Nursing Home. Interment in Hartford, CT. Walter Hobkirk was born January 23, 1913 in Waddington, NY to Alexander and Elizabeth Robertson Hobkirk. He graduated from Madrid High School in 1932 and Syracuse University in 1938. He graduated from Union Theological Seminary in New York City with a Master of Divinity degree in 1941. His first position was Assistant Minister in the Rye Presbyterian Church, Rye. There he met, and later married, Marietta Banks of Hartford, CT. In 1943, he enlisted in the US Navy as a chaplain and was commissioned as a Lieutenant J.G. He married in July 1944 prior to going overseas. He was made a full Lieutenant in 1945. After the war, at the age of 33, he accepted a position as minister of Park Presbyterian Church in Newark and served there from 1946 until his retirement in 1978. In 1968, Rev. Hobkirk began graduate work at Colgate Rochester Divinity School, eventually receiving a degree as Master of Theology. Early in 1978, Mr. Hobkirk announced his retirement. Mrs. Hobkirk had returned to teaching and retired from the Newark Central School. After retirement, they moved to Pittsford, where the Rev. Hobkirk went to work at the Summerville Presbyterian Church. After his second retirement, he worked with the Pittsford Presbyterian Church and did volunteer work with the Friends of Strong. He was predeceased by his wife Marietta, in 1980; also by four brothers and a sister. He is survived by his sons, Douglas of Seattle, WA and David of Newark, and daughter, Marjorie Hobkirk of Scottsdale, AZ; six grandchildren, Morgan Hobkirk of Anchorage, Alaska, Peter and Andrew Hobkirk-Frerichs of Scottsdale, AZ; Ian Hobkirk of Long Island, Audra Hobkirk of Middlebury, VT, Nathan Hobkirk of Newark; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
