Taber, James - James E. Taber, 55, of Henrietta and Wolcott, died June, 28, 2002. James was a veteran of the Vietnam era and a Xerox employee. He is survived by brothers and sisters, Lester (Kathryn) Taber, Robert Taber, Maurice (Elaine) Taber, Evelyn Taber-Kifer, Betty Prosser, Rose (Joe) Nicosia, Alice Fowler, Mary-Ellen LaPiana, Sandra (Bill) Hemmerlein; several nieces and nephews. Interment in Rose Cemetery.

Glowczak, Valeria - Valeria (Viola) Glowczak, of Rome, died June 28, 2002. Interment, St. John's Cemetery, Clyde.

Pitcher, Clifford C. - Clifford C. Pitcher of Grace Avenue, Newark, died June 25, 2002, at Strong Memorial Hospital. Cliff was born in Boonville, New York the son of Jay and Caroline Muirer Pitcher. He was a graduate of Buffalo State Teachers College and did graduate work at Syracuse University. He taught in the Marathon area before coming to Newark in 1947, where he first taught at the Junior High School. He then taught and was principal (1949-58) at the Lincoln Elementary School. Mr. Pitcher was principal of the Newark Junior High School from 1958-71, when he retired. From 1955-71, he was the school district's transportation supervisor. In honor of Mr. Pitcher, flags at all five Newark schools were lowered to half staff Wednesday. He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, a member of the Newark Elks and served on the board of the Newark Public Library. He was a member of the Newark Rotary Club for over 51 years and had served as its president. He was a member and past president of the Newark Country Club. He was proud of his participation in the founding of Little League Baseball in Newark in 1950. He is survived his wife, Zada; two sons, Frederick (Mary) of Williamsville, and David (Ainslie) of Bethesda, Maryland; and four grandchildren - Christopher, Matthew, Megan and Amanda. He was predeceased by his brother, Harold and sister, Noreen Cooper. Burial will be in White Haven Memorial Park, Perinton.

Bauer, Bernard - Bernard J. Bauer Sr., 75, of Newark, died June 25, 2002. He was predeceased by his wife, Dora Bauer. He is survived by his children, Ann (David) Sewert of Newark, Sandy Dennis, Bernard (Jean) Bauer, Pat (Scott) Trude; grandchildren, Sara Sewert-Dunn, Rachel (Scott) Kuperus, John Dennis, Jason Hawkins, Garrie Bauer, Bernard Bauer III, Joseph Terrana, Michael Terrana, Vincent Terrana; two great-grandchildren; aunt Anna Starr; many nieces and nephews. Interment, White Haven Memorial Park.

Snow, Theresa - Theresa R. Snow, 96, formerly of Lyons, died June 20, 2002 at the DeMay Living Center in Newark. Theresa was born in Lyons on March 26, 1906, to James and Mary Gayliardi Snow. She was a life resident of Lyons and was a member of St. Michael's Church in Lyons and its Altar and Rosary Society. She retired from C.H. Stuart Co. as an inventory control clerk. She is survived by her nieces, Grace (Rudy) Fritz of Newark, Marie (Bruce) Taber of Clyde; several other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews across the country. She was predeceased by her sisters, Caroline Gianereco, Mae Graham, and Margaret Snow; and brothers, Frank and John Snow. Interment in Newark Cemetery.

Plyter, Reva - Reva M. (Contant) Plyter, 83, of Williamson, died June 21, 2002. She was a member of the Bible Baptist Church of Sodus and the Williamson American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by children: David (Mary) Plyter of Loveland, CO; Darrell (Esther) Plyter of Williamson; John (Polly) Plyter of Ohio; Richard (Timi) Plyter of Virginia; Leona Plyter of Newark; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Orlo (Bev) Plyter, of Williamson; and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Elwood Plyter in 1983. Interment in Lake View Cemetery, Pultneyville.

Hosmer, Floyd - Floyd Hosmer, 72, died June 19, 2002 at the home of his daughter in Bloomfield. Floyd was born in Edwards on June 16, 1930 to the late Charles and Bernice Davis Hosmer. Floyd served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and retired in 1992 from Garlock in Palmyra. He is survived by his wife, Olive Webb Hosmer; children and spouses: Kevin (Kathie) Hosmer of Woodstock, GA; Neal (Chu-Cha) Hosmer of Enterprise, AL; Diane (Greg) Moore of Bloomfield; Karen (Dan) Webb of Phelps; Bruce (Charlene) Hosmer of Newark; nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; his brothers, Arthur (Joyce) Aldridge of CO and Edward (Yvonne) Aldridge of OK; a sister, Judy Gotham of Gouverneur, NY; a half-brother and a half-sister. Interment is in Fairview Cemetery.

Bridger, William - William J. Bridger, 87, formerly of Lyons, died June 20, 2002 at the JFK Medical Center in West Palm Beach, FL. He was born in Lyons, the son of William and Belle Bridger. He was retired from the Nabisco Co. and had worked for the Newark School District as a custodian for several years. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dorothy; four children, Dorthea Taylor of West Palm Beach, William (Pat) Bridger of Newark, Delaware, Keith (Anna) Bridger of Lyons, and Karen Cermak of Lyons; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mattoon, Joshua - Joshua M. Mattoon, 24, of Clifton Springs, died after a car accident on June 22, 2002. Joshua was born October 10, 1977 to Joseph Mattoon III and Kathleen Bird Mattoon. He was a 1995 graduate of Midlakes High School, and a member of the Sons of the Phelps American Legion. He was employed by Iron City Sash and Door in Victor. He is survived by his parents, Joseph and Kathleen Mattoon, both of Phelps; brother, Andy Mattoon of Phelps; maternal grandmother, Mary Bird of Clifton Springs; paternal grandparents, Joseph Jr. and Shirley Mattoon of Phelps; aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Interment will be in Pearl Street Cemetery.

Bramer, Howard - Howard Bramer, 83, of North Rose died June 21, 2002 at Wayne County Nursing Home. He was born Sept. 21, 1918 in South Sodus, to Arthur and Elizabeth Mertz Bramer. He was a staff sergeant during World War II in the Army's 263rd Coast Artillery. He is survived by his wife, Lois Bastian Bramer; daughters, Joi (Jeffery) Washburn of Newark, and Gay Bramer of North Rose; sister-in-law, Irma Bastian; nieces and nephews.

Haskins, Scott - Scott F. Haskins, 48, of Marion, died June 15, 2002. He was predeceased by his parents, Vincent (Budd) and Ruth Haskins. Scott is survived by his daughter, Bridget (Kevin) Penrose of East Rochester; grandsons, Scotty and Zachary; brother, Mark (Linda) Haskins; sisters, Deborah (James) Christie & Wendy (Stephen) Cook, all of Marion; several nieces and nephews, and two great-nephews; aunts, Esther Haskins of Carmel CA., Rachel Drave of Marion, June Young of Marion, Beth Stevenson of Ontario, Wilma Campisi of West Webster, and Grace Robertson of Ontario; many cousins and friends.

Young, Ernest - Ernest J. Young, 81, of Marion, died June 12, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Phyllis (Engelson) Young; son, Ernest; daughters, Iralee (Charles) Pfromm, Dawn (Paul) Young, Laurie (James) Place; 9 grandchildren; great-granddaugher; sisters, Jessie (Richard) Ruebens and Alice (Peter) Swan; brothers, Herman (Esca), Albert (Mary); nieces, nephews and cousins. Mamuscia, Dorothy - Dorothy Beader Mamuscia, 80, of Newark, died June 15, 2002 at Newark ViaHealth hospital. Dorothy was born February 7, 1922 in Hamburg, NY, to Hubert and Isabelle MacGinnes Shawcross. She came to Newark in 1941 and had worked as an operator for the New York Telephone Company and in the cafeteria at the Newark High School. She returned to Newark in 2000 from Auburn, where she lived for 27 years and had worked in the housekeeping department of Auburn Memorial Hospital. She was a member of St. Michael's Church in Newark. Dorothy enjoyed crossword puzzles, sewing and knitting. She is survived by her husband, Samuel; two daughters, Linda (Roger) Capwell of Newark and Cynthia (Bruce) Watson of Grand Island; four granddaughters; a great-grandson; sister, Gertrude Mohr of Cheney, Kansas; brother, Jack (Bettie) Shawcross of Camillus; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in 1972 by her first husband, Paul Beader. Interment in East Newark Cemetery.

Tyman, Betty - Betty Chase Tyman 74, of Sodus Point, died June 7, 2002 after a long illness. Betty was born August 12,1927 in Newark, the daughter of Vern and Amelia Price Chase. For 15 years she served as volunteer coordinator of religious education at St. Francis Church in Phelps and was a founding member of the St. Francis Parish Council. She was a past member of the board of the Phelps Community Library, a member of the American Field Service and a member of the Phelps Service Club. She is survived by her sons, Mark of Sodus Point, David of Boston, MA, Scot (Michele) of Phelps, and the Rev. Gary Tyman of Rochester; grandchildren, Scot, Carrie and Hannah, all of Phelps.

Stein, Martha - Martha M Stein, 96, died June 5, 2002. Martha was a retiree of Sarah Coventry Co., member of Park Presbyterian Church, and Newark Elks Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by a daughter, Merne-Eddie Stein, of Lancaster; two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter. She was predeceased by her husband, Francis, in January 2000, and brother Ferdinand Schussler in 1946. Interment in Newark Cemetery.

Milligan, Elva - Elva S. Milligan, 100, of Palmyra, died June 11, 2002 at the Newark Manor Nursing Home. She was predeceased by her husband, George, in 1973. Mrs. Milligan is survived by her daughters, Shirley (Gene) Bassage of Sodus Point, and Beverly (Don) Wilkinson of Palmyra; son, George R. (Janet) Milligan, Jr. of Palmyra; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and three nieces. Interment in Palmyra Cemetery.

Ihrman, Burton - Burton R. Ihrman, 77, of Marion died June 12, 2002. He was a veteran of the Navy. He is survived by Alice, his wife of 53 years; daughters, Karolyn (Thomas) Miller of Clyde, Marilyn Ihrman of Canandaigua, Tina Ihrman of Marion; son, Terry (Valerie) Ihrman of Marion; two grandsons; sister-in-law, Martha Ihrman of East Rochester; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Donald and John, and a sister, Marjorie. Interment in Marion Cemetery.

Fagner, Arthur - Arthur William Fagner, 89, formerly of Newark, died June 3, 2002 at the Wayne County Nursing Home, with his loving family by his side. Arthur was born July 3, 1912 in Phelps, the son of James and Mary Oldacre Fagner. He retired from Garlock Corp., where he worked as a machinist. Mr. Fagner was a member of the Arcadia Reformed Church, the Newark Masonic F&AM Lodge 83, and the Masonic Lodge Bowling Team for many years. He had volunteered for Meals on Wheels since 1982. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Cornelia 'Kay' VanKouwenberg Fagner; daughter, Marjorie Bixby of Lyons; sons, James (Arlene) Fagner and Ronald (Micki) Fagner, both of Newark; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; sister, Lena VanKoevering of Newark; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, George, Herman, Frank, Walter, Lester, Jim and Harold; and sisters, Lula, Ruth and Susie. Interment, East Palmyra Cemetery.

Polakiewicz, Joseph - Joseph Polakiewicz, 86, of Newark died June 1, 2002 at DeMay Living Center. He was born December 17, 1915 in Rochester to Michael and Ella Polakiewicz. He retired from Garlock Corp. in 1980 after 36 years as a machinist. He enjoyed puttering around the house. He was a member of St. Michael Church and the VFW of Newark, Post 2883. The Army flag flew in honor of his service during WWII. Mr. Polakiewicz is survived by his wife Clara Gobeyn Polakiewicz; daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and Robert Searles of Shortsville, and Donna and Richard VanNorman of Newark; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brothers, Leonard (Doris) of Newark and Teofel Polakiewicz of California; sisters, Veronica Chacker and Josephine Green of Newark; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Edward, and sister, Julia. Interment with military honors at Newark Cemetery.

Francis, Donna - Donna J. (Dillenbeck) Francis, 59, of Marion/Palmyra died May 28, 2002 at Clifton Springs Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Ronald W. Francis; daughter, Sandi (Ben Huey) Wade of Kentucky; son, Scott (Donna) Francis of Marion; grandchildren, Nicole and Tara Francis and Danielle and Eric Wade; sisters, Carol (Howard) Roberts of Byron, Wendy (Eric) Quetchenback of Churchville, Karen Young of Webster, and Peggy (Mike) Lamemark of Chili; brother, Steven Young of FL; uncle, Nelson Dillenbeck; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Mike Young. Interment in Palmyra Cemetery.

Bixby, Lucy - Lucy Jane Bixby, 88, formerly of the Rose Garden Apartments, Newark, died June 2, 2002 at her residence. She was born November 24, 1913 to Alfred and Nellie Becker Tyler, in Moline, Illinois. She lived most of her childhood in Weedsport, graduating from Weedsport High School. She worked as a Department Manager at the Big N in Newark and Geneva for many years. She was a member of the RSVP and the Arcadia Reformed Church in Newark. Mrs. Bixby is survived by her son, Michael (Catherine) Bixby of Florida; daughters, Patricia (Dominick) Trunzo of Ontario and Zoe (James) Morris of Rochester; 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; sister-in-law, Margaret Metcalf of Savannah; nieces and nephews. Mrs. Bixby was predeceased by her husband, Jerome Bixby, on August 24, 1991. Interment in Holy Sepulchure Cemetery.

Henries, June - June C. Henries, 68, of Clifton Springs, died June 1, 2002 at the Geneva Living Center. She was born May 11, 1934, in Phelps, the daughter of Arthur and Alma King Conklin. She retired from Labelon in Canandaigua. She is survived by two daughters, Debra Ruuspakka of Orlando, FL and Darlene (Ronald) Priest of Sodus; brothers and sisters, William (Carol) Conklin of Phelps, Esther Clark of Waterloo, Donna (Donald) Stone of Newark, Harry (Patricia) Conklin of Phelps, Charles (Terri) Conklin of Titusville, FL, Wayne (Rosalie) Conklin of Webster, and Gloria Groescup of Clifton Springs; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Marion, in 1996, and by a brother, Robert Conklin.

Verplank, Mary - Mary Verplank, 83, of Marion, died May 30, 2002. She was predeceased by her husband, Daniel and a son, Donald. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Henderson of Penfield; four grandchildren; sister, Connie (Carl) Steimer of Newark; brother, Peter (Victoria) DenHamer of Webster; nieces and nephews.

Boyd, Wesley - Wesley H. Boyd, 76, of Sodus, died May 29, 2002 at Blossom View Nursing Home in Sodus. He is survived by two sons, David of Louisiana and Brian of Palmyra; two step-daughters, Betty Deforest of Wolcott and Lori Deforest of Newark; two step-sons, Ivan Deforest of Newark, Timothy Deforest of Rochester; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; sister, Alice Culton of Pennsylvania; other relatives and friends. Interment in Sodus Rural Cemetery.

Eberhardt, William - William G. Eberhardt, III, 63, of Cobblestone Terrace, Newark, died May 31, 2002 at Newark ViaHealth. Bill was born in Geneva and had been a resident of Newark for many years. He was the son of the late William G. and Marion Balcom Eberhardt. He is survived by many friends in Newark. Interment in Glenwood Cemetery.

Mehlenbacher, Grant - Grant E. Mehlenbacher, 86, of Marion, died May 30, 2002. He was predeceased by his wife, Mae, brother, Earl, and sister, Ruth. He is survived by daughter, Marina (Terry) Krocke of Marion; three grandchildren; brother, Burt Jr. (Alice) Mehlenbacher of Sandy Ponds; sister, Helen (Harold) Hopper of Farmington; nieces and nephews.

Morgan-Hobbie, Elizabeth - Elizabeth Morgan-Hobbie, 92, formerly of Sodus, died May 27, 2002, at Hospicare in Ithaca, NY. She was born November 3, 1909 in Buffalo, grew up in Lewiston, and graduated from Buffalo State Teachers College in 1933. She resided in Sodus for most of her adult life with her husband, Thomas Charton Hobbie, MD, who predeceased her in 1986. They were married for over 52 years. They were the parents of six daughters who survived them: Mary Berkelman, Margaret Hobbie and Ellen Hobbie, all of Ithaca; Katherine Storms of Albany; Elizabeth Jones of Carroll Valley, PA; and Susan Ruuska of Seattle. Betty is also survived by her sons-in-law; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was an active member of the Sodus community. She joined Monday Club, a literary organization, soon after coming to Sodus in 1934. She contributed time to Women of Rotary, Myers Community Hospital, Sodus Free Library, American Field Service, Sodus Bay Historical Society and the Presbyterian Church. Her ashes will be interred in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Buffalo.

Camp, Edwin - Edwin C. Camp, 88, of Sodus, died June 4, 2002 at the DeMay Living Center in Newark. He is survived by his loving wife, Marie; children, Herman (Sharon) of Marion and Christine (Jon) Peters of Wexford, PA; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Marietta Homman, and grandson, Randy Homman.

Brandt, Elizabeth - Elizabeth Swartele Brandt R.N.M.F.C.C., 64, formerly of Newark, died May 15, 2002 in a one-car accident near her home in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Elizabeth was born September 30, 1937 to Edward and Alice Vanderbrook Swartele of Newark. She graduated from Newark High School in 1955 and went on to study nursing at St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing in Syracuse, receiving her RN diploma in 1958. She received her BA degree at the California State University specializing in Social Welfare. She also attended Azusa Pacific University, CA, receiving her MA degree for Marriage and Family Counseling. She was licensed in both California and Nevada. She retired March 29, 2002. She received the Rite of Passage Award in 1992 for her work with wayward boys. Elizabeth is survived by her sister, Lorraine Knight, three nieces and one nephew, and five great-nieces, all of Lyons; several aunts, one uncle and several cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Russell Brandt of California. A funeral Memorial Mass will be held later at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Newark; interment in the Newark Cemetery on North Main Street.

DeRue, Isaac - Isaac DeRue, 87, of Newark, died May 23, 2002 at the Wayne County Nursing Home. Mr. DeRue was born March 6, 1915 to John and Suzanne Jansen DeRue in Williamson. He enjoyed working with his hands, making doll houses and toy furniture. He also repaired lawnmowers at Isaac's Repair Shop in Fairville. He was a charter member of the Fairville Volunteer Fire Department and the Newark American Legion. The staff at the funeral home flew the Army flag in honor of his service during WWII. Mr. DeRue is survived by his wife of 62 years, Martha Shultz DeRue; sons, Bob (Melody), Edward (Sandra) and Harold (Joyce) DeRue, all of Fairville; daughters, Suzanne (John) Glerum of Tennessee and Linda Niedenfuhr of New Jersey; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Nellie Boyko of Newark; nieces and nephews. Mr. DeRue was predeceased by his son-in-law, Peter Niedenfuhr in 2001.

Potter-Archer, Kathryn - Kathryn Ann Potter-Archer, 38, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee died suddenly on May 22, 2002. Kathryn was born August 14, 1963 in Batavia, the daughter of Walter Sowa and Barbara Shepard Sowa. She worked at First Comp. Omaha Insurance in Tennessee. Kathryn is survived by her daughter, Sarah Potter; mother, Barbara Sowa of LeRoy; father, Walter Sowa Jr. of Florida; brother, Walter Sowa III; sister, Kristine Sowa; aunts, uncles, cousins and two nieces. Interment is in Machpelah Cemetery in LeRoy.

Beman, Blanche - Blanche L. Beman, 84, of Newark, died May 25, 2002 at Rochester General Hospital. Blanche was born July 23, 1917 in Phelps, to Charles and Bessie Gleason Case. She was employed for 18 years at the Newark Developmental Center. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newark and a member of Eastern Star 466 in Lyons. She is survived by her son, Thomas H. (Joyce) Beman Sr. of Victory; daughter, Joan Beman of Newark; daughter-in-law, Brenda Beman of Lyons; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Robert Case of Palmyra, Leon Case of Newark, Donald Case of Oswego; four sisters, Nellie Fitch, Rose Fitch, Betty DeBlaere, all of Newark, and Edith Ryan of Clyde; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Maurice, in 1998; son, Ronald L. Beman Sr. in 2000; and brothers and sisters. Interment in South Lyons Cemetery.

Pierce, Earl - Earl Warren Pierce, 86, of Newark died May 27, 2002 at his home. Earl was born September 10, 1915 in the town of Arcadia, a son of Warren and Sadie Pierce. He had been retired from Garlock Corp. in Palmyra. Mr. Pierce was a member of St. Michael's Church. He is survived by his sons, Roger (Helen) of Newark and Richard Pierce of North Carolina; two grandchildren; step-sons, Jack Petrosino and James (Betty) Petrosino, both of Auburn; step-daughter, Elizabeth 'Betty' Ann (Donald) Bucholtz of Florida; many step-grandchildren; brother, Harold (Lila) Pierce of Rochester; sister, Agatha Jensen of Newark; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Madeline VanLaeken Pierce, and second wife, Mary Ann Wisniewski Pierce. Interment, St. Ann's Cemetery in Palmyra.

Wilkie, James - James Albert Wilkie, Jr., 66, formerly of Newark, died May 28, 2002 at VanDuyne Home in Syracuse. Jim was born in Bellwood, West Virginia, June 19, 1935, son of James and Virgie Adams Wilkie Sr. He served in the Army for 20 years active duty and three years in the Reserves. He had served in many parts of the U.S. While in the service, he had received the National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal, Purple Heart; Valorous Unit Award; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He served on many color guard for funerals in Newark. He was a life member of Arcadia Memorial Post 2883 of the V.F.W. and a member of August Mauer Post 286 of the American Legion of Newark. Davis, Stewart L. - Stewart LaVerne Davis, 81, of Newark, died Saturday, May 18, 2002 at Newark ViaHealth. Stewart was born June 1, 1920 in Newark, the son of George and Beatrice Marriott Davis. He worked at Fold-Pak for 34 years, retiring in 1982. He enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing and hunting. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Esther Herman Davis; sons, Robert Davis of Lyons and Richard (Pat) Davis of Newark; daughter, Nancy (James) O'Neill of Newark; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother Vaughn Davis of Lodi; sisters Gerrie Brink of Newark, Betty Dunhum of Georgia and Oney (Clarence) Reubens of Georgia; nieces and nephews. Mr. Davis was predeceased by his grandson, brother Bernard, and sister Molly Tellier. There was a prayer service by the Newark VFW Post 2883, where he was a member. The Army flag was flown in his honor, for service during WWII. Interment, South Lyons Cemetery.

Howard, Alberta - Alberta Howard, 76, of Newark, died May 17, 2002, after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. Alberta was born January 1, 1926 in Newark, the daughter of Albert and Anna Gnage Cheeseman. Mrs. Howard graduated from Newark High School in 1943 and Rochester General Hospital Nursing School in 1946. She married Whitney H. Howard on June 12, 1948. She enjoyed a long career at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital, as a surgical nurse and later as the Assistant Director of Nursing. Mrs. Howard is survived by her son, Mark Howard of Arizona; daughters, April Howard of N. Tonawanda and Cynthia VerDow of Clifton Springs; sister, June Kubetzka of NJ; nieces, Anne Boone, Peggy (Wil) Simpkins, Roberta (Ed) Nevin-Owell and Mary (Ben) Lisitski; great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Whitney, on September 5, 1998 and son-in-law, Rodney VerDow, on September 9, 2001. Interment in Riverview Cemetery in Phelps.

Reeves, Lawrence - Lawrence E. Reeves Jr., 54, of Lyons, died at home May 21, 2002 after an extended battle with cancer. Lawrence was born Dec. 12, 1947 in Hannibal, Missouri, the son of the late Lawrence and Jean Cornell Reeves. Before his illness, he was employed at Mobil Chemical in Macedon for many years. He was also a race car driver at Spencer Speedway. Lawrence is survived by his wife, Amy; four sons, Lawrence (Ellen) Reeves III of FL, Scott Newberg of TN, Kevin Reeves of Lyons, and Nathan Reeves of NC; stepdaughter, Angelica White of OH; four grandchildren; 12 brothers and sisters: Mary Jo Creller of AL; Mike Sipes, Barbara Meeks, Shirley Lancaster and Judy Smith, all of Newark; Elaine Manes of SD; Linda Higbee of TX; Steve Reeves, Deeann Reeves, Sandy Jo Vanderpool, Debbie Reeves and Roni Sue Kissell, all of PA; step-sister and brother, Diane and Arthur Sipes; nieces and nephews. Hickman, Beverly - Beverley Mack Hickman, 60, of Palmyra died May 22, 2002. She recently retired as Palmyra Town Clerk after 18 years and was a life member of the Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary. She was predeceased by her son, Christopher Cummings. She is survived by her husband, Ronald Hickman; children, Wanda Osmen, Richard (Fay) Cummings, Dawn Daniels, Ronald Hickman, Jr., David (Jennifer) Hickman; 13 grandchildren, and one great-grandson; sister, Carol (steve) Hanagan and brother, James Mack; nieces and nephews. Bartels, William H. - The Rev. William H. Bartels, 70, of Newark died Sunday, May 12, 2002 as a result of an automobile accident. Rain-slick Route 88 South at Pelis Road was the site of the tragedy which killed the pastor and injured his wife Dorothy. People who knew the Rev. Bartels called him a beloved pastor and 'the most selfless man you could imagine.' He was born November 8, 1931 in Independence, Missouri, the son of Henry and Marie Bessmer Bartels. He received a Master's Degree of Sacred Theology and a Master's Degree of Clinical Psychology at Concordia Theological Seminary in St. Louis. He accepted a call to his first parish in Minnesota in 1957 and then moved to Buffalo 1959. He was chaplain for New York State for over 30 years serving at West Seneca State School, Marcy Psychiatric Center, and Central New York Psychiatric Center. In 1990, he accepted a call to Redeemer Lutheran Church in Newark, from which he retired in 1997. The Rev. Bartels never did retire, and he continued doing interim for several churches in the area. For many years he was on the radio program, Lutheran Hour in Buffalo. He loved to drive and had driven in all 48 contiguous states and in all but two Canadian provinces. When he lived in Utica, the pastor sang in the Maennerchor (men's choir) and toured Germany with the group. He was a member of the Newark Clergy Fellowship and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. Dorothy Bartels, 74, is recuperating at Newark ViaHealth, being treated for shoulder and wrist injuries. The Rev. Bartels is survived by Dorothy Kettunen Bartels, his loving wife of 44 years; children, David (Peggy) Bartels of Clinton, Deborah (Phillip) Beiderbecke of Valhalla, Sharon (Kenneth) Stone of Massachusetts, and Mark Bartels of Georgia; grandchildren, Timothy and Audrey Bartels, Lane and Samantha Stone; his mother, Marie Bartels of Missouri; brother, Donald (Jacque) Bartels of Missouri; sister, Barbara Hulse of Missouri; nephew Ben and niece Beth Ann.

Vercruysse, Eleanor - Eleanor Vercruysse, 88, of Newark, died May 12, 2002 at the DeMay Living Center. Eleanor was born Jan. 14, 1914, in North Williamsport, PA to Charles and Elsie Boyer. She retired in 1980 from the Newark Development Center and was a member of the Amitie Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. She had been a resident of the DeMay Living Center for eight years. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Virginia Vercruysse of Newark; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Esther Rifenburg and Laverna King. She was predeceased by her son, Richard in 2000; her husband, Peter, in 1982; and a brother, Leon Boyer. Interment, South Lyons Cemetery.

Tilburg, Elizabeth - Elizabeth 'Tillie' Tilburg, 90, of Newark, died May 12, 2002 at the Wayne County Nursing Home. Tillie was born Feb. 22, 1912 in Arcadia, the daughter of Abram and Carrie Faas Tillburg. She had worked for over 40 years for the former Fibrerboard, Riegel, Rexham, Bloomer Bros. and Fold-Pak companies. She is survived by her sister, Ina (Gerald Cook) DeFisher of Newark; sisters-in-law, Lucille Tilburg and Louise (Chet) Yonker of Newark; two nephews, Chris (Becky) and Larry (Karin) Tilburg of Texas; longtime friend, Lena Maslyn; one great-nephew and a niece. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Chester and Harold Tilburg; and a nephew, Jim Tilburg. Interment, East Newark Cemetery.

Ransley, Grace - Grace C. Ransley, 99, of Blossom View Nursing Home, died May 10, 2002. She lived in Sodus all her life. She was predeceased by her husband, D. Murray in 1978 and a daughter, Charlotte in 1997. She is survived by three sons, Charles M. Ransley of Newark, Harold E. (Jean) Ransley of Sodus and Richard G. Russell, Norma - Norma M. Russell, 80, of Newark, died May 11, 2002 at Clifton Springs Hospital. Mrs. Russell was born on Aug. 31, 1921 in West Chazy, Clinton County, the daughter of William and Lena Lawliss Rabideau. She was a member of St. Michael's Church. For many years she was a Foster Grandparent at the Roosevelt Center in Newark. She had worked at various employers in the area, including Garlock Inc., Hallagan Manufacturing, DeRoo's and IEC Electronics. She is survived by five children: Richard of Lyons, Dale (Sue) of Newark, Lawrence (Margaret) of Newark, Judy (William) McKown of Lyons and Jane (Bruce) Greene of Newark; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; seven brothers: Floyd, John, Charles, Martin, Richard, Harold and Norman Rabideau; three sisters, Leona (William) Scharf, Wilda (Earl) Cutler and Laura Remington; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters. Interment in St. Mary's Cemetery in Brushton, Franklin County.

Tellier, Remulta - Remulta Elizabeth Tellier, 80, of Newark, died May 9, 2002. Remulta was born July 27, 1921 in Newark, to George and Beatrice Marriott Davis. She worked in food service at Newark-Wayne Hospital, and retired in 1980 from food service at the Newark Developmental Center. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Newark and its Ruth Circle, a life member of the VFW Auxiliary 2883 of Newark, a member of the Top of the Hill Retirees Club, member of the Newark Senior Citizens. She is survived by her two daughters, Marlene (Albert) Simizon and Vicki Tellier, both of Newark; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Stewart (Esther) Davis of Newark and Vaughn Davis of Lodi; three sisters, Gerrie Brink of Newark, Betty Dunham and Oney (Clarence) Reubens of Georgia; sister-in-law, Jean Tellier of Syracuse; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in 1983 by her husband, Arthur, and a brother Bernard Davis. Interment in East Newark Cemetery.

Fisk, Gary - Gary M. Fisk, 49, of Marion died May 8, 2002. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Caroline Fisk, and by his brother, Jim. Costello, Annie Ruth - Annie Ruth Costello, 89, died May 8, 2002 at the Wayne County Nursing Home. Annie Ruth was born May 16, 1912 in Reform, Alabama to James and Maggie Youngblood Smith. She married James Costello in 1944 in Tuscaloosa. She was an accomplished pianist and a member of the Clyde United Methodist Church. She was an avid golfer and member of Wayne Hills Country Club. She is survived by her daughter, Ann (Tony) Costello Ciaccia, of Rochester; son, James (Marie Rios) Costello, of Newark; two grandsons; a sister, Eleanor Machen of Alabama. She was predeceased by her husband, James, in 1987; one brother; and two sisters. Interment, St. John's Cemetery in Clyde.

SanAngelo, Violet - Violet Ruth SanAngelo, 86, died May 14, 2002 at the DeMay Living Center in Newark. Mrs. SanAngelo was born to Frank and Ada Severence Kless on April 29, 1916 in Clifton Springs. She worked at Sarah Coventry's cafeteria for 10 years. She was a devoted wife and mother. Mrs. SanAngelo is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, James and Shirley, David and Sharon, Michael and Barbara SanAngelo; eight grandchildren; two great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank, in 1981, one brother and two sisters. Interment,Newark Cemetery.

Gaylord, Betty - Betty J. Gaylord, 75, of Newark died Jan. 13, 2002 in Ellenton, Florida. Interment, in Oaklawn Cemetery, Oaks Corners. Betty was born Nov. 7, 1926 in Newark, the daughter of the late Leman and Helen Glimpse. She was employed at Newark Developmental Disabilities Service Office until her retirement. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Edward Gaylord Sr., of Newark and Florida; son, Edward Jr. (Faye), of Clyde; three grandsons and two great-grandchildren; brother, Leman (Nancy) Glimpse, of Port Byron; one aunt, Ollie Schulz, of Newark; nieces and nephews. Newton, Ruth - Ruth Dee Newton, 80, formerly of South Main Street, Newark, died March 17, 2002 at her home in Cape Coral, Florida, after a long illness. Mrs. Newton was born in Newark on July 2, 1921, daughter of Morris J. and Ruth E. Dee. She was married to the late John Price Newton, Sr., former executive of the Paul D. Newton Co. and Commercial Enterprises, who died in 1985. Mrs. Newton is survived by four sons, Paul D. Newton of Cape Coral, FL; John P. Newton Jr. of Orange Park, FL; Charles W. Newton of Lilburn, GA; C. Mark Newton of Farmington Hills MI; sister, Nancy Coughlin of Stockton, CA; brother, James M. Dee of Twin Lakes, OH; seven grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Derks, Renee - Renee D. Derks, 50, of Walworth, died May 1, 2002 following a motorcycle accident. Renee was born June 13, 1951 in Sodus, to Erwin Derks and Clara Weeks Derks. She was a member of the Wayne County Hog Club, and she volunteered for many community organizations, especially families and people in need. She is survived by her longtime companion, James Brusser of Walworth; her mother, Clara Derks of Newark; father, Erwin Derks of Webster; son, Timothy Lebbert of Henrietta; brothers and sisters: Reginald Derks of Port Charlotte, FL, Richard Derks of Riverview, FL, Randall and Lisa Derks of Fairport, Roxanne Derks Ferrara of Hilton, Rebecca Derks and Lori of Clifton Springs; three grandchildren, nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was predeceased by a daughter and son-in-law.

LaShore, Frederick - Frederick LaShore, 79, of Newark, died May 3, 2002 at the Wayne County Nursing Home. Frederick was born in Hornell on Sept. 4, 1922, son of Floyd and Marie Burdick LaShore. He retired from the Newark Developmental Center, where he worked in the kitchen. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Frances Vitaro LaShore; brothers-in-law, Dominic, Robert, and Donald Vitaro; sisters-in-law, Betty Hartman and Doris Vitaro; nieces and nephews. Interment in Newark Cemetery.

Flint, Elmer - Elmer N. Flint, 71, of Wolcott, died May 7, 2002 after a lingering illness. He was predeceased by his mother, Helen Flint in 1984. He is survived by his father, Norris Flint; wife, Betty; children, Sharon Bates, Garry and Karen Flint; one granddaughter; brothers, Everett (Ruth) Flint and Lee (Carol) Flint; sister, Elsie (Arthur) Deys of Newark; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Elmer was a Xerox retiree and member of the First Baptist Church in Wolcott. Interment North Wolcott Cemetery.

Bailey, Margaret - Margaret Ann Bailey, 63, of Newark, died May 7, 2002 at her home. Interment in Newark Cemetery. Margaret was born August 23, 1938 in Canandaigua to Chester and Wilma Clifton Garnsey. For over 40 years, she was vice president of the West End Collision, Inc. For 15 years, she was publisher of the 'Connection' with her partner, Judy Gullo. Margaret was a communicant of St. Michael's Church where she was active in many activities. She had been volunteering with Meals on Wheels for over five years. An avid reader, she was a loyal patron of the Newark Public Library. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, John F. Bailey; five sons and daughters-in-law: Michael of Detroit and Sandra Bailey of Perinton; John E. and Sandra Bailey of Newark; Daniel F. and Rebecca Bailey of East Aurora; Thomas and Betsy Cannon-Bailey of Walworth, and Joseph A. and Renee Bailey of Newark; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandson; three sisters, Kathy Lucia of Rochester, Beverly Gullo and Barbara Farnsworth, both of Newark. She was predeceased by a brother, Earl Garnsey, in 1958.

Oosterling, David - David W. Oosterling, 65, of Newark, died suddenly on May 1, 2002 at his home on Route 88 North. Dave was born September 20, 1936 in Rochester to Peter and Caroline LaGasse Oosterling. He retired from the Newark Central Schools, where he worked in the maintenance department. He also worked for Newark Hospital. Dave was a member of the Newark American Veterans Support Organization (AVSO). He enjoyed working in the yard, wood working and electrical wiring. Dave is survived by his wife, Gene Grant Oosterling; children, Linda (Paul) Fowler of Lyons, Timothy Oosterling and his friend, Charmane of Clyde, Thomas (Kay) Oosterling of Newark, and Brenda Oosterling of Newark; grandchildren, Kelli, Jonathan, Grant and Jacob; one step-grandson; sister, Jeannette (Harold) Glerum of Newark; sister-in-law, Shirley Oosterling of Lyons; nieces, nephews and a great-niece. Dave was predeceased by his brother, Fred, on May 2, 1987. Interment at White Haven Memorial Park in Perinton.

Kemp, Richard - Richard E. Kemp, 69, of Phelps, died April 28, 2002 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Mr. Kemp was born July 19, 1932 in Waterloo, the son of the late Emil and Emily Meyer Kemp. He was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He was a member of the Phelps American Legion Post 457, the Waterloo VFW and the Korean War Veterans Waterloo Chapter 1. Mr. Kemp was a past district governor and a member of the Phelps Lions Club, past president of the Waterloo Sportsmen's Club, a member of the National Rifle Association, a member of the Newark Elks Lodge and a member of the Palmyra Moose Lodge. Mr. Kemp worked in the sales department of Mike Barnard Chevrolet, Newark. He achieved many awards and had the distinct honor of being a member of the Legion of Leaders and the Truck Honor Club. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine 'Gerry' DiSanto Kemp; children, Jacqueline Ann (James) Stone of Lyons, Kris (Frederick) Baker of Savannah, Edward (Debbie) Kemp of Phelps and Marcia (Joseph) Zappia of Fairport; grandchildren, Samantha Stone, Claire and Frederick Baker, Jacob and Abigail Kemp' and Lauren and Nicholas Zappia; brother, William (Sharon) Kemp of Waterloo; and several nieces, nephews; aunts and uncles. He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Emily Kemp Stone. Interment, St. Francis Cemetery.

Posman, Raymond - Raymond E. Posman, 75, of Newark, died April 27, 2002 at Newark ViaHealth. Ray was born July 12, 1926 in Rochester, the son of Hector and Regina Posman. He retired from the State Police in 1964 as a senior investigator, working out of Auburn. He also operated a private security business in Rochester and was a process server in the area. Ray formerly lived in Canandaigua for 40 years. He had served in the Army overseas, was a past commander of the American Legion Post 256 of Canandaigua, a member of the VFW of Newark, a member of the American Legion of Phelps, and a member of St. Michael Church. He is survived by his wife, Joan Posman; two sons, Steven of Phelps and Kenneth (Ann) of Pittsford; four grandchildren; a sister, Judith DeClerck of Newfane; nieces and nephews. Interment in St. Ann's Cemetery in Palmyra.

Zilinski, Arthur - Arthur C. Zilinski, 60, died in Bath, NY on April 4, 2002. Arthur was born December 20, 1941 in Rochester. He is survived by his parents, Charles and Emma (Off) Zilinski; sister, Joyce Jackson of Gettysburg, PA; brother, James (Janet) Zilinski of Lenox, MA; five nieces and nephews; two great-nephews; one great-niece; aunts and uncles. Mr. Zilinski was a firefighter with the City of Rochester from July 1968 until his retirement in 1988. He owned and operated AZ Enterprises of Bath. He was an Army Veteran, a member of Bath Elks Lodge #1547, Charles E. Wescott American Legion Post #173 Bath, a past member of Hammondsport Moose.

Curry, Mark - Mark E. Curry, 36, of Newark, died unexpectedly April 29, 2002 at his home. He was born November 12, 1965 in Auburn, to Edward and Donna Ventafido. He lived in Auburn until moving five years ago to Newark. He had been employed at Hallagan Manufacturing. He is survived by his parents, and his sister, Denise Schafer; maternal grandmother, Irene Kimari of Auburn; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Stowell, Doris - Doris L. Stowell, 78, of Geneva, died April 24, 2002 in Geneva General Hospital. Doris was born Sept. 24, 1923 in Geneva, to Frank and Jennie Crouch Millerd. She retired from the Newark Development Center and devoted her life to her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her sons, David (Linda) Stowell and Len (Dee) Stowell, both of Geneva; two sisters, Ethel Hershey of Clifton Springs and Edith Smith of Geneva; one brother, Francis Millerd of Newark; step-children, step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Clinton Stowell; a brother, Louis Millerd; and a sister, Anna Millerd. Interment in Glenwood Cemetery.

Hilfiker, Bernice - Bernice M. Hilfiker, 87, died April 30, 2002 at Blossom View Nursing Home, in Sodus. Interment, Webster Rural Cemetery. Bernice was born in Remsen on May, 1, 1915, daughter of George and Laura Hughes Ingersoll. She graduated from Ramsen High School in 1931 and Potsdam Normal School in 1934. She received her B.S. degree from Buffalo State Teachers College in 1940. She taught two years in a one-room school in Remsen, six years as a junior high school teacher in Webster and Irondequoit, 17 years in the fourth grade in Phelps. Mrs. Hilfiker was a member of the United Church of Phelps, the Phelps-Clifton Springs Retired Teachers Association, the NYS Retired Teachers Assn., Omega Chapter of Pi State Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, the Eaton Birding Society of Geneva, and Genesee Ornithological Society of Rochester. Mrs. Hilfiker was a avid birder and enjoyed gardening and bridge. She married Glenn J. Hilfiker May 30, 1941. She is survived by two sons, Ronald (Sarah) of Geneseo, and Kenneth (Patti) of Anchorage, Alaska and one daughter, Dr. Joan (Dr. Ronald Linkenheil) Hilfiker of Big Flats; brother, Clarence (Ruth) Ingersoll and sister, Mildred Baker, both of Remsen, NY. She is also survived by seven grandchildren.Bernice was predeceased by her husband, Glenn, on Sept. 6, 1999.

Swayze, Bonnie - Bonnie 'Sweet Lady' LaFlame Swayze, 70, of Lyons and Rochester, died April 9, 2002. She is survived by her son, James Murphy of Lyons; and a daughter, Claudette Gugliuzza of Rochester; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; and a dear friend, Anna Rauber of Rochester.

Rose, Calvin - Calvin G. Rose, 78, of Newark, died April 30, 2002 at the Wayne County Nursing Home. Calvin was born in Caton, NY on May 14, 1923, son of John and Sarah Wilcox-Rose. He had worked at Bloomer Bros. in Newark in production. He served in the Army during World War II and was a life member of the Arcadia Memorial Post #2883 of the VFW of Newark. He is survived by a sister, Emily Burdick of Mansfield, PA, four nephews, and good friend, John Palmer of Newark. He was predeceased by his wife, Jennie, in 1985. Interment in East Newark Cemetery with full military rites accorded at the grave.

Gallivan, Kenneth - Kenneth R. Gallivan, Sr., 87, of Marion, died April 17, 2002. He is survived by his son Kenneth, Jr. of Fairport and daughter-in-law, Naomi Gallivan of Marion; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Callan, Rev. Luke James - The Rev. Luke James Callan, 82, a priest of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester for 57 years, died April 15, 2002 at St. Ann's Home. A native of Rochester, Father Callan was baptized and confirmed at Corpus Christi Church, Rochester. He completed his theological studies at St. Andrew's and St. Bernard's Seminaries. He was ordained to the priesthood March 17, 1945. Following his ordination, Fr. Callan served as associate pastor at several parishes: Holy Rosary, Rochester; Saints Peter and Paul, and St. Patrick, both in Elmira; St. John the Evangelist, Clyde; St. Patrick, Savannah; and St. Louis, Pittsford. Fr. Callan became chaplain of Rochester State Hospital (presently Rochester Psychiatric Center) in 1955. There, he directed efforts to build St. Jude's Chapel, which was completed in 1969. In 1982, he was appointed pastor of St. Thomas the Apostle where he served until his retirement in 1995.. Interment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Kotvis, Verna L. - Verna L. Kotvis, 83, of Newark, died April 19, 2002 at the Wayne County Nursing Home. Verna was born June 9, 1918 in Sodus, to Arthur and Florence Bartholomew Lagenor. She retired from C.H. Stuart Co. of Newark with 20 years of service, worked for the NYS Unemployment Office and for Jackson & Perkins Co. She was a member of the Fairville Fire Department, Ladies Auxiliary, and the Fairville Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, James (Jake) of Newark; brother-in-law, Henry Kotvis, nieces and nephews. Interment in Marion Cemetery.

Wagner, Helene - Helene H. Wagner, 84, of Clifton Springs, died April 19, 2002 at Clifton Springs Hospital. Helene was born Dec. 8, 1917, in Lyons, a daughter to Joseph and Marie Ottnod Helbert. She worked in Newark as an operator at New York Telephone and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Surviving are her husband, Ralph; son, Richard (Deborah) of Lyons; cousins, one granddaughter, two stepgrandsons; her aunt, Genevieve Bardmaker of Lyons. She was predeceased by her son John Wykle. Interment in South Lyons Cemetery.

Pembroke, Roger - Roger S. Pembroke, died April 20, 2002. He was predeceased by a companion Dorothy Molhoek. He is survived by his daughters, Sheila Schenk and Bonnie (Tim) Brown of Walworth; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Viola Stubbings of Palmyra; brother, Kenneth (Terrie) Pembroke of Lockport; several nieces and nephews. He was a member of the Walworth United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of both the Walworth Fire Dept. and Walworth Masonic Lodge.

Lagenor, Linda - Linda E. (Campbell) Lagenor, 54, of Williamson, died April 20, 2002 at Pines of Peace in Ontario. Survived by her husband, Dan Lagoner; sons, Geoffrey and Gregory; mother, Doris F. Campbell of Fairport; father- and mother-in-law, Dean and Mary Lagoner of Williamson; brothers, Leonard (Joan) Campbell of FL, Howard J. (Janet) Campbell of Pittsford, Robert L. Meyers, Leslie - Leslie T. Meyers, 71, of Williamson died April 20, 2002. He was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife, Joan (Wilson) Meyers; son, Tim (Karen) Meyers of Ontario; daughters, Debra Stevens of Lyons, Sharon (Richard) Watson of Sodus, Lisa Hollis of Williamson; six grandchildren; one great granddaughter; brother, Elwyn (Bernice) Meyers of Texarkana, TX; nieces and nephews. Santillo, Betty - Betty M. (Campbell) Santillo, 80, formerly of Palmyra, died April 20, 2002. Survived by her children - Brenda (David) Compton, Karen (Bob) Finstad, Brian (Diana) Santillo, Carolyn (Harold) Mann, Beverly (Gene) Spankenberg; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; brother, Roy (Peg) Brown; several nieces and nephews. She as predeceased by her husband, Rocco. Interment at Marion Cemetery.

Florance, Martha - Martha J. Florance, 88, formerly of Lyons, died April 23, 2002 at the Wayne County Nursing Home. Martha was born Feb. 11, 1914 in South Sodus, the daughter of Edward and Emma Wraight-Pullen. She retired in 1975 from Stromberg Carlson Co. in Rochester. She had lived in Florida, Lyons and Marion. She is survived by her daughter, Marjorie Buzzerd, of North Carolina; son, Carl Taylor, of Marion; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; five great-greatgrandchildren; sister, Gladys VanDerlyke of Newark; brother, Floyd Pullen, of East Rochester; and several nieces and nephews. Interment York Settlement Cemetery, York Settlement Road in North Rose.

Crane, William - William H. Crane, 75, of Newark died April 12, 2002, in Clearwater, FL. He was born in Rochester, moved to Newark, owned and operated Crane's Dairy in Newark until 1972, and retired from Webster Chrysler auto sales before moving to Florida in 1989. He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Clearwater, The Elks and Veterans of Foreign Wars of Newark. He was predeceased by wife, Shirley VanWaes Crane (1998). He is survived by daughter, Robyn (Michael) Crane-Taylor; two grandchildren in Safety Harbor, FL; and sister, Charity Miner of Williamson.

Smith, Laverne - Laverne Frey Smith, 91 of Newark, died April 16, 2002 at Newark Via Health. Mr. Smith was born the son of William and Bessie Frey Smith in Marion, New York on September 29, 1910. He graduated from Newark High School in the Class of 1929. Mr. Smith retired from Fold-Pak in 1974 after working there for 44 years. When he retired he worked on the assembly line as a box catcher. Mr. Smith was a member of the Arcadia Reformed Church. He served in the Army during WWII. He was renowned for his sharp mind and clear memory of the past. His faith was revealed by the scriptures he would quote. Mr. Smith is survived by two sisters-in-law, Emma Hunter of Illinois and Gwendolyn Blanchard of Kentucky; brother-in-law Ross Blanchard of Ashville; many nieces, nephews and cousins including a special niece, Mary (Ronald) Kellner; Godchild, Lise Keller Kiesznoski; many good friends. Mr. Smith was befriended by the Amrose and Cimineri families of Lyons. He was predeceased by his loving wife Gertrude 'Trudy' Smith in 1987.

Powers, William - William I. Powers, 79, of, Clyde, died April 15, 2002 at Newark ViaHealth, after a brief illness. Interment, Rose Cemetery. Mr. Powers was born Sept. 1, 1922 in Harrisburg, Vermont, son of William and Pearl Cartier Powers. He served in the Army during World War II, and was a member of the VFW Post 947 in Clyde. Bill was retired from the Fold Pak Corp. of Newark, where he was employed for more than 20 years. He was also an avid Boston Red Sox baseball fan and enjoyed fishing in his spare time. He is survived by his wife, Helen, of Clyde, with whom he celebrated a 52nd wedding anniversary on April 14; two daughters, Carolyn (Roger) Bishop of Geneseo and Elizabeth Labreck of Glover, VT; two sons, Irving (Patty) Powers of Lyons and William Powers of Mobile, AL; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Ellis, Gary - Gary L. Ellis, 67, of Deltona, Florida, formerly of Newark, died April 6, 2002. Gary was born in Sodus Center and moved to Central Florida in 1985. He was a retired chemical engineer in quality assurance for Xerox Corp. in New York. Ellis belonged to the Methodist Church, and he was a charter member of American Legion Post #255, of Deltona. He is survived by is wife, Marlene, of Deltona; son, Randall (Patty) of Austin, Texas; daughters, Julie (James) Thompson of Heathrow, FL and Nikki (Lonnie) Greenwood of Deltona; six grandchildren; and sister, Winifred Nieskes of Newark. He was predeceased by three brothers and one sister.

Oliver, Carla - Carla Oliver, 54, of Newark, , died April 11, 2002 at Newark ViaHealth. Carla was born July 27, 1947 in Dunkirk. She attended ARC, Key Industries, and attended the Workshop. She is survived by the Debra Oakleaf family of Newark, where she lived for 18 years; and many friends from the Finger Lakes Developmental Disabilities Service Office. Interment in East Newark Cemetery.

Thomas, Nancy - Nancy A. (Catchpole) Thomas, 76, of Newark, died April 11, 2002 at Newark ViaHealth.She graduated from the Syracuse University School of Nursing in 1943. She is survived by her children, Gregg M. (Kelly) Thomas, Susan L. Kerry and Edwin F. (Catherine) Thomas; eight grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Helen Lyon and Ruth Osborne. She was predeceased by her husband, George F. in 1998; sisters, Erminnie C. Ferkes in 1974 and Margery C. Brooks in 2001.

Van De Voorde, Jane - Jane E. Van De Voorde, 85, of Waterloo, died April 14, 2002. Jane was born July 14, 1916 in Lyons, to Homer S. and Leah Mosher Lake. She was a 1933 graduate of Lyons High School. She and her first husband Stanley developed and maintained in N. Wolcott, daffodil and tulip show gardens, using hundreds of species of bulbs which came from Holland. While living in N. Wolcott, she enjoyed being a 4-H leader. In 1953 she and her husband started and operated Chrys-Tu Gardens in Red Creek, until 1963. After the death of her husband, she moved to California, where she worked under master floral designer Jim Roberts at Korbel Flower Shop. She was employed as a floral designer and also taught floral design classes. While in California, she married her second husband, John. In 1978, they moved to Waterloo to assist her daughter in the operation of Faith's Flower Shop in Waterloo. She is survived by her husband, John P. Van De Voorde; two daughters, Mrs. George (Vicki) Rocha of Auburn, and Mrs. Gene (Faith) Tam of Waterloo; three step-sons, Richard Van De Voorde of Mansfield, Ohio, John J. Van De Voorde of Seminole, FL and Charles Van De Voorde of Oswego; one step-daughter, Mary Guchone of Newark; seven grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; many nieces nephews and loving friends. She was predeceased by her first husband, Stanley J. Verburg; one son, Lonnie Verburg; and brother, Sherman Lake. Interment in South Lyons Cemetery.

VanNorman, Lola - Lola Ridley VanNorman, 95, of Newark, died April 16, 2002 at the Wayne County Nursing Home. Interment, East Newark Cemetery. Mrs. VanNorman was born the daughter of Nelson and Mary Pelis Ridley on June 21, 1906 in the Town of Arcadia. She taught school in Lyons and in Arcadia. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Newark and 75-year member of the Newark Grange. Mrs. VanNorman is survived by seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; sister, Hazel VanderBrook of Marbletown; nieces and nephews. Mrs. VanNorman was predeceased by her husband, William in 1974; daughters, Dorene Tucker in 1990 and Charlene Lyon in 1995.

Gerbig, Alice - Alice Marie Gerbig, 80, died April 16, 2002 at Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton. She had lived in the Town of Smithfield, the Town of Fenner, and, most recently, on Mutton Hill Rd. in Peterboro. Born August 7, 1921 in Peterboro, she was a daughter of Roger and Mary White Dorrance. Alice was a 1938 graduate of Canastota High School, attended Syracuse University, graduated from SUNY Brockport in 1961 and did graduate work at Temple University. She was a reading teacher at the Morrisville Elementary School until her retirement in 1981. Her husband Frederick Gerbig predeceased her in 1983. Mrs. Gerbig was a member of the Peterboro United Methodist Church and the NYS Retired Teachers Association. Surviving are four sons and daughters-in-law, Bernard and JoAnn Gerbig, Michael and Charla Gerbig, all of Cazenovia, Roger and Fran Gerbig of Clifton Springs, and Joseph and Alicia Gerbig of Newark; a daughter, Mary Ann (Jon) Benedict of Peterboro; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; brother, James (Maude) Dorrance of Peterboro; nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a grandson, Curtis Gerbig in 2000.

Hermenet Michael, Jr. - Michael Hermenet, 89, died April 6, 2002 at Rochester General Hospital. He was born to Michael and Nellie Boeye Hermenet on June 11, 1912 in Marion. He owned and operated the Hermenet Farms on Minstead Road in Marion. He enjoyed playing baseball and in his later years watching baseball games on TV. Mr. Hermenet was predeceased by his wife, Liz (Kotvis) Hermenet, on November 28, 2000; and sisters, Nellie Elliot and Elizabeth DeMeyers. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Vern and Sandy Hermenet of Newark; daughter and son-in-law Marjorie and Francis DeWind of Manchester; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Anna (Raymond) Rommel of Newark, Elsie (Harold) Norsen and Ruth Ann (James) Cheeseman of Florida; nieces, nephews and good friends. Interment in the Marion Cemetery.

Davis, Geraldine - Geraldine C. Davis, 71, of Newark, died April 7, 2002 at her home. Geraldine was born December 19, 1930 in Spring Port, to Clarence and Florence Whipple Whitmore. She worked for 23 years for Parker-Hannifin Corp. in Lyons and had worked for the Wayne County Nursing Home and ARC in Newark. Geraldine enjoyed sewing and was a great seamstress. She attended the Newark Baptist Church. Geraldine is survived by her daughter, Rita Davis (James) Thibert; sons, Keith (Sandi) Davis and Jeffery (Cindy) Davis; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Eva Dillon, Anita Casselman, Bessie Bower, Audrey King, Violet O'Dell and Linda Schwab; brothers, Harold, Vincent, Eugene, Charles, Ed and Fredrick Whitmore; beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Interment, Elmwood Cemetery, Lyons.

VanAcker, Delia - Delia J. VanAcker, 88, died April 5, 2002 in the Blossom View Nursing Home in Sodus. She is survived by her son, Ronald VanAcker and daughter, Esther (Darrell) Plyter, all of Williamson; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; brother, James (Pearl) Fox of Williamson; 3 sisters, Ida Leenhouts of Williamson, Martina Smythe and Marian (Carl) Shulenburg, all of Rochester; sister-in-law, Mary Hittle of Marion and Helen Fox of Potter; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in 1982 by her husband, Henry.

Bliek, Madelene - Madelene D. Bliek, 87, died April 5, 2002 in the County Nursing Home in Lyons. She was predeceased in 1985 by her husband, Jacob. She is survived by her daughter, Harriet (Raymond) Herold of Lyons; brothers, James (Dorothy) DeLyser of Sodus and Herbert (Irma) DeLyser of Williamson; sister-in-law, Julia Bliek of South Sodus; nieces and nephews. Interment in Sodus Rural Cemetery.

Pentycofe, Floyd Sr. - Floyd W. Pentycofe Sr., 71, of South Sodus, died April 4, 2002 at Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic. Floyd was born June 15, 1930 in the town of Sodus, son of Lloyd and Hester McDonald Pentycofe. He was employed at Fold-Pak in Newark for more than 40 years. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Genevieve; children, Linda (Rusty) Staderman of North Rose, Starr (Les Bedette) Rusco of Clifton Springs, Ken (Eileen) Pentycofe of Wolcott and Carol (David) Putman of' Lyons; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Lester (Carole) of Lyons, Irvin of Sodus, Lewis of North Rose and Robert (Pearl) of'Sodus; sisters, Mary VerHeecke of South Sodus, Louise Pentycofe of South Sodus and Juanita (Bruce) Veralain of Webster; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Floyd Jr. in 1990; and a brother, Lloyd. Interment in Baptist Rural Cemetery in Sodus.

Frownfelter, George - George A. Frownfelter, 89, of Newark, died April 5, 2002 at Via Health of Wayne. George was born March 30, 1913 in Wallaceton, PA to George and Helen Quiggle Frownfelter. He was a printer in Pennsylvania and retired from the Newark Developmental Center. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by his nephews Bob and Craig Frownfelter and Cleatis Miller; and nieces Helen Miller and Carol Jensen. He was predeceased by his wife, Willamee in January 1999. Interment in Greenlawn Memorial Park, South Williamsport, PA.

Buttaccio, Frederick - Frederick Buttaccio, 90, of Clyde, died April 4, 2002 at Newark ViaHealth. Fred was born September 21, 1911 in Newark, to Thomas and Rose Fischette Buttaccio. He was a lifelong communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church. Fred was retired from the Seneca Army Depot and had worked in a local creamery and on the family farm. He was member of the Sons of Italy Lodge. He is survived by daughter, Brenda (Jim) Lawson of Fairport; son, Edward (Maria) Buttaccio of Walworth; two granddaughters; four sisters, Flora (Belmont) Avoli of Orchard Park, Anna (Fred) Burley and Jane (John) Dapolito, both of Clyde, and Delia Colarocco of Newark; brother, Raymond (Aggie) Buttaccio, of Chambersburg, PA; three sisters-in-law; brother-in-law, Rudy DeLisio; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; special friends, Donna and Jim Iati and Peter Salerno, Sr. He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara on Dec. 15, 2001; his brothers, Joe and Danny and his sister, Eleanor DeLisio. Interment, St. John's Cemetery in Clyde.

Smith, Frank - Frank C. Smith, 81, of Newark, died April 1, 2002 at Newark ViaHealth. Mr. Smith was born on January 30, 1921 in Hampton, South Carolina. He had been a switchman for the New York Telephone Company for over 40 years. During World War II, Frank was a Chief Petty Officer in the US Navy serving in the Pacific Fleet. He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, the August-Mauer Post American Legion, Arcadia Post VFW and had was a member of the Newark Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Evelyn; two sons, Wayne of Newark and Brian of Colorado Springs; two grandsons; two sisters - Vivian Smith of Norfolk, VA and Helen Pier of Phoenix, AZ.

Pluta, Deborah - Deborah (Ververs) Pluta, 47, died April 1, 2002. She is survived by her husband Wesley Pluta; her parents, Pearl and Henry Ververs of Palmyra; mother-in-law Caroline Pluta: brother Douglas (Jane) Ververs; nephew James; niece Kristin; several cousins. Interment, East Palmyra Cemetery.

Youngs, Ronald - Ronald H. Youngs, 74, died April 2, 2002 at DeMay Living Center, Newark. Ron was born December 17, 1927 in Chicago to Herbert and Edna Morgan Youngs. He worked for Thomas Electronics of NY as a Plant Manager, retiring in 1993. Ron served in the United States Navy Submarine Radio, Radar and Sonar from 1945-48. He received the Good Conduct Medal and the WW II Victory Medal. The Navy flag flies in honor of his service to our country. Ron enjoyed bird watching and loved all animals. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Hubbard-Youngs; sons, Scott (Nicole) of Binghamton, andEric Sims of Newark; daughters, Deb (Ray) Juhlin of Wisconsin and Sue Book of Illinois; several grandchildren, nephews and mother-in-law, Thelma Hubbard of Ohio. Ron was predeceased by his sister, Gwen Wingler, February 15, 2002 of Illinois. Interment, Newark Cemetery.

VerHeecke, Lucile - Lucile E. VerHeecke, 84, of Newark, died April 2, 2002 at the House of John in Clifton Springs. Lucile was born Feb. 23, 1918 in Williamson, to Jacob and Minnie Buchner Collier. She had worked as a clerk, filling orders for Sarah Coventry and Hanover Distributing for 23 years, retiring in 1981. Lucile enjoyed crocheting and was a member of St. Michael Church. She is survived by her son, Richard 'Dick' Ver Heecke, of Rochester; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; brother, Ralph (Janice Young) Collier of Palmyra; sisters, Hazel Monje of Lyons and Gladys Ryckbost of Newark. She was predeceased by her husband, Camiel, in 1978; and her son, David, in 1985. Interment, East Newark Cemetery.

Samson, Eric - Eric S. Samson, 45, of Sodus Point, died suddenly April 2, 2002. He was a graduate of Penn Yan Academy Class of 1974 and Monroe Community College. He was a 20+ year veteran of the security division of Robert E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant in Ontario. Survivors include his mother, Jane C. Samson of Sodus Point; siblings, Patricia Abouelnagga of Reston, VA; Deidre Samson of Mason Neck, VA; Elaine Samson of Jakarta, Indonesia; James W. Samson of Anchorage, AK; Michael Samson of Rochester; David Samson of Bethesda, MD; Douglas Samson of Baton Rouge, LA; many sisters and brothers-in-law, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, James, and his sister, Susan Marash.
