Crouch, Harold C. - Harold C. Crouch, "Mr. Steam Locomotive" of Newark, died Friday, March 27, 2009 at age 89. Mr. Crouch is survived by his sisters, Mary (William C.) Schmitt of Rochester, Kathleen Crouch of Syracuse, a niece, Ann Marie (Henry) Dabrowski of Atlanta ,Ga., nephews, William J.( Ann Marie) Schmitt, John F. Schmitt, and Michael (Marianne) Schmitt, grand-nieces and nephews , Alison, Lindsay, Kelsey, Benjamin, Zachary & Nathan. Harold was an honors graduate of Newark High School and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and was elected a member of The Society of Sigma Xi research group. He was a Veteran of the Merchant Marines in WWII. He had a long career with the railroads: New York Central, Penn Central and Conrail. His life long hobby was model railroading. Harold was a Past President, Charter and Honorary member of the Finger Lakes Live Steamers. He was a devout member of St. Michael’s Church in Newark, N.Y. and volunteered at their food closet. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. No prior calling. Friends are invited to Harold’s Funeral Mass at Holy Cross Church, 4492 Lake Avenue, Rochester, N.Y. Kapral, Emery C. - Emery C. Kapral, 55, of Palmyra, died Monday on Mar. 30, 2009 at the Newark-Wayne Community 
Hospital. Emery was born on October 7, 1953 in Bewick, Pennsylvania the son of Emery and Joanne Manganaro Kapral. 
He had worked as a truck driver most of his life. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, April 6, 2009; funeral services following at 7 p.m. at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Pennsylvania. Fitchpatrick, Pauline - Pauline Fitchpatrick of Vernon, CT, formerly of Newark, 16 days short of her 91st birthday, died Saturday, March 21, 2009 with her family by her side. Mrs. Fitchpatrick was born the daughter of the late A. I. and Mae Carlisle Metzgar on April 6, 1918 in Tompkins County NY. She grew up in Interlaken NY where she graduated high school in 1934. Her primary career was in service to others as an employee of Willard Psychiatric Center and Newark Development Center. She retired in 1977 after 36 years and relocated to New Port Richey, FL in 1980, and moved to Connecticut in 2005 to be near family. There will be no prior calling hours. Family and friends may attend a Funeral Service on April 4, 2009 at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, E. Miller St., Newark with Rev. Steven Matteson officiating. Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery in Interlaken, NY at the convenience of family. Mrs. Fitchpatrick is survived by her son Wayne (Donna) Johnson of Manchester, CT; two grandchildren, Sheryl (Barry) Cyr of Manchester, CT and Douglas (Erin) Johnson of Frisco, TX; and three great granddaughters, Courtney Cyr and Kaitlin and Emily Johnson. Harley, Arthur E.  - Arthur E. Haley of Savannah, passed away on his 97th birthday, on Friday, March 27, at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Canandaigua. Arthur was a U.S. Navy Veteran, having served during World War II. Following his military service, Arthur was employed as a Mechanical Engineer at Eastman Kodak in Rochester. Family and friends called on  Sunday, at the Colvin-Norton Funeral Home, 13081 West Church Street in Savannah. A Masonic Service was held Sunday evening. Funeral services for Arthur will be held Monday, 2 p.m. from the funeral home. Interment with Naval Military Honors will be at the South Butler-Savannah Cemetery on Route 89. Arthur is survived by his children Alan Edward Harley of CO, Lyle James (Mary Kay) Harley of OK, and Janet Lynn Goodwin of NC; grandchildren Lori, Wayne, Sarah, Michael, Rebecca, Jennifer and Chad; and 15 great grandchildren. Arthur was predeceased by wives Marguerite in 1984 and Mildred in 2006.

Day, Alice R. - Alice Rose Day, 87, of Newark,  died Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at her daughter’s home with her family by her side. Mrs. Day was born the daughter of the late Lewis and Rose DePauw DeVelder on Dec. 30, 1921 in Newark, NY. She was a 1939 graduate of Newark High School. Retired from the Newark Developmental Center where she worked as an attendant,  over the years she held many jobs. Sometimes she would work two eight hour jobs per day at places such as Spring Valley Nursery, Margroves, Ames and Cole's. Mrs. Day at one point was the proprietor of Hydesville Grocery in Newark. Working in her flower and vegetable gardens as well as cooking and cleaning played a significant part in her life. The most cherished times she held close to her heart was time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Family and friends may call Sunday, (March 29 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Norman L. Waterman Funeral Home, Inc., 124 W. Miller St., Newark. A Funeral Mass will be Monday, March 30 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Peter Clifford celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in East Newark Cemetery. Mrs. Day will be remembered by her daughters Bonnie Bertino, Linda (John) Donaldson and Sandra (Dick) Rice all of Newark; grandchildren Dawn (Casey) Vernon and Daniel (Jessica) Rice; great grandchildren Mallory Williams, Natalie and Kailey Vernon and Julia Rice; several nieces and nephews. Stahl, Evelyn - Evelyn  Stahl, 90, passed away Monday, March 2, 2009 at the Hackensack Hospital, New Jersey. Miss Stahl was born on January 14, 1919 in Port Gibson NY, the daughter of George and Laurel Stahl. She was a 1936 graduate of Newark High School.

Hess, William Donald  - William Donald Hess,  98 passed away on March 9, 2009 in Brewster, MA. Don was born Dec. 29, 1910 in Rochester, NY and attended  Rochester Public Schools, graduated from Ithaca College, BS and from  Syracuse University with a Masters degree. He served in the U.S. Navy from January 2, 1943 through January 18, 1946. He was a teacher and coach in  Sodus from  Sept. 1935- Jan 1943. He began in January 1946 as a teacher and coach in Newark and became the High School principal in Sept 1951 and served in that position through 1964. He was Newark Superintendent of Schools from  Sept 1964 until retirement in 1970. Don was a member of Park Presbyterian Church in Newark and the Chatham, MA First United Methodist Church. He served in the Newark Lions Club for 25  years, was President of the United Way, Newark; served on the Hospital Board of Governors in  Newark and served on the Cape Cod Conservatory Board of Governors. He is survived by his son, Donald Scott Hess of Petaluma, CA; and two grandsons, Evan Hess of Olympia, Washington and Lukas Hess of Petaluma, CA. Funeral Services were private. MacMaster, Lesley L. - Lesley Lynn MacMaster, 55, of Rochester, died Sunday, March 22, 2009 at Strong Memorial Hospital with her family by her side. Lesley was born the daughter of the late Eric and Hilda Thompson. She worked for Eastman Kodak for many years before starting her own business, Key Data Entry Services. She was brilliant with numbers and was known as a worker that never tired. Energized 24 hours a day and  attending to detail was her specialty. Always ready to help others, a great conversationalist and loved to  laugh. She enjoyed cutting coupons from the newspaper every Sunday and running to CVS to catch the ultimate savings. Lesley was a great cook and loved to plan delicious dinners. She was a brisk walker and few could keep up with her speed. But the most important things in her life was her family, spending time with her grandchildren and sharing precious moments with John. Wadsworth, Ruth V. - Ruth V. Wadsworth, 85, of Newark, passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at the Clifton Springs Nursing Home. Ruth was born May 1, 1923 in Lyons, a daughter to Henry and Sarah J. Libbert VanKoevering. She was a graduate of Lyons Union School, and attended Fredonia Music School. She was an accomplished musician, playing and teaching flute and piano. She was the organist at Lyons Presbyterian Church for several years. Family and friends may call on Friday, March 27, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Weeks-Keysor Funeral Home, 5  Phelps St., Lyons. Reuter, Jane N. - Jane N. Reuter, 76, of Sodus Point, passed away Sunday, March 22, 2009. Jane was born July 26, 1932 in Lyons, a daughter to Karl and Nellie Martin Feiock. She was an adult education swimming instructor and a life guard for the Newark School District and a help at Newark Developmental Center at the pool. Jane retired from the Newark School District as a bus driver after 31 years of employment. Family and friends may call on Thursday, March 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Weeks-Keysor Funeral Home, 5 Phelps St., Lyons, where a memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. following visitation with Rev. Arthur Sziemeister officiating. Burial will be in North Newark Cemetery at a later date. She is survived by her husband, Ralph of Sodus Point; three children, Randy (Edna) Reuter of Alton, Ronald (Doreen) Reuter of Macedon and Karol (Richard) Mumby of North Rose; six grandchildren, Shannon, Robyn, Katelynn, Kerry, Marina and Ryan; great-granddaughter, Brianna, and brother Karl (Betty) Feiock of Newark. Stevenson, Earl F.  - Earl F. Stevenson of Sodus died suddenly, on Saturday March 21 at age 81. Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, March 24, from noon until 2:00 p.m. at the Norton Funeral Home, 45 West Main Street, Sodus, where Earl’s funeral service will be held at the conclusion of visitation. Chappell, Thomas - Thomas Chappell.58, of Newark, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, March 18, 2009, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Tom was a member of the Park Presbyterian Church, a councilman for the Town of Arcadia, serving his 2nd term. He graduated from the Boston Museum School of Art. He loved to garden, was a conservationist, and loved to travel  with his family. He was an avid Celtic's fan. Tom was a member of the Cancer Relay for Life Team for 8 years, a photographer, grant writer, and project construction manger of Sheen Housing Authority. A funeral service has held Sunday, March 20, 2009 at the Park Presbyterian Church, Newark. Burial at the convenience of the family. Thomas is survived by his wife of 30 years, Barbara (Bilotta);  son Andrew; daughter Robin; brother Robert (Betty) Chappell; sister Susan (David) Walters;  Uncle  Tom (Phyllis) Powers of Iowa, several nieces, nephews, cousins and many loving friends. Renzi, Sr., Robert - Robert Renzi, Sr., 69, of Newark, died Thursday, March 19, 2009 at Rochester General Hospital. Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, 2009 at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark.  Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 23 at the funeral home with Rev. Larry Humphries officiating. Burial will follow in Newark Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the National Kidney Foundation of Upstate New York, 15 Prince Street, Rochester, New York 14607. Mr. Renzi was born on April 25, 1939, in Newark the son of Alfred and Angeline Federico Renzi.  He was a 1957 graduate of Newark High School.  Bob had worked for the New York Central Railroad and  for 20 years, he was a machinist at Garlock, Inc.  In 1982, he bought the Tire Spot in Newark which he operated until his retirement in 2004.  He was also a partner with his wife in Newark Discount Beverage.  He was a member of the DeLuge Hose Company #1 of the Newark Fire Department and was active with the Newark Fire Police.  Bob had been a volunteer with the Newark-Arcadia Volunteer Ambulance.  He had belonged to the Palmyra Moose Club and the Newark Elks.  A drag race driver, Bob had won many championships throughout the years.  He was an avid weight lifter and loved working in his garden. He is survived by his step-mother Jennie Renzi of Lyons, three sons Robert, Jr., Michael and Alan (Michele) all of Newark, four grandchildren Makalia, Matthew, Mitchell and Anna.  He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years Patricia Ann on December 7, 2007. Rogers, Richard E. Sr. - Richard E. Rogers, Sr. 78, of Davenport, FL., passed away peacefully at his home, on March 17, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born August 16, 1930 in Rose, NY to William J. and Gladys Rogers of Newark, NY. He lived in Newark several years, and was in the U.S. Army serving in Okinawa until Dec. 1952. In 1954 he married Connie Barnaba of Lyons, NY, and worked for Rochester Asphalt Materials several years as a truck driver, retiring in 1992. Richard and his wife, Connie, made residence in Davenport, FL. in 1995. "Dick" loved playing golf with his golf league and friends. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Newark, NY and attended St. Ann Catholic Church in Haines City, Fl. He is predeceased by his son Richard "Rick" of Oswego, NY who passed away on Jan. 5, 2009. Survived by his wife, Connie; daughter Pamela Mattice of Pt. Gibson, NY; daughter-in-law Cheryl Rogers of Oswego, NY; grandchildren Gianina (Karl) Dotterweich of York, PA; Laci (Sean) Gillen of Pt. Gibson, NY; James Varricchio of Seneca Falls, NY; Joshua Rogers and Sara Rogers of Oswego, NY.; 5 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Cremation arrangements are under the care of National Cremation Society.

Lee, Caroline E. - Caroline E. Lee, 80, of Lyons, died Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at the Auburn Community Hospital. There will no prior calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at Elmwood Cemetery, Lyons NY. Caroline was born in Lyons, NY the daughter of William and Rose Rowe Higgs. She was a ward secretary at the Newark-Wayne Community Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Calvin E. Lee, of which she celebrated her 59th wedding anniversary on February 11th, 2009, two daughters, Lorrie (Stephen) Yonker of Red Creek, Kimberly (Tim) Collier (Poole) of Auburn, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, six nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Calvin E. Lee Jr., two brothers, William Higgs and James Higgs, and her mother and father William and Rose Higgs. Brown, Howard W. - Howard W. Brown of Lyons, passed away peacefully, age 89, Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at Newark Wayne Community Hospital. Howard was born April 23, 1919 in Elmira, a son to Walter H. and Mamie Wilcox Brown. He was a combat veteran of the Army during WWII, serving in the 21st ordnance, M&M Company, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign. Howard retired from Hallagan Manufacturing in Newark as an upholsterer. At Howard's request there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at a later date. Predeceased by son Dennis in 1963 and 3 sisters. Survived by wife of 63 years, Jean A. Erway, Ruth K. - Ruth Erway, 91, of Rushville, passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at the Clifton Springs Nursing Home. Ruth was born in Rochester to the late Amil and Della Keppler and was a graduate of Franklin High School. Mrs. Erway and her late husband owned and operated the Shurfine Foods store in Rushville for many years and she also worked at Rochester Products during WW II. She was a member of the Canandaigua Baptist Church. There will be no prior calling hours. Funeral services were held Sunday at the Canandaigua Baptist Church, 5026 North Road, Canandaigua. Burial in Overacker's Cemetery.  Survivors include her children Sally (Ed) Eshleman, Jill Shattuck, and Jim (Suzanne) Erway of Newark, grandchildren David, Ann and John Eshleman, Jason and Aaron Shattuck and Elizabeth, Catherine and Ethan Erway. Walsh Jr., Arthur R. - Arthur R. Walsh Jr., 61, of Canandaigua, died suddenly Friday March 13, 2009 at Thompson Hospital. Art was born the son of the late Arthur and Bernice Walsh on June 18, 1947 in Gouverneur, NY. He enjoyed football, collecting coins and toy cars. Ordering things from TV ads and playing golf was two of his expertise. However, the natural endowment that Art held and cherished was his ability to write poetry. Spiers, Paul R. - Paul R. Spiers of Sodus, passed away peacefully March 4, 2009 at the DeMay Living Center with his loving family at his side at the age of 90. Paul was a graduate of the Cornell University Class of 1941 and a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. Joining the United States Army Air Corps, First Lieutenant Spiers served as a B-17 pilot during World War II, assigned to the 384th Bomb Group. He flew 32 combat sorties in the European Theater of Operations. Paul retired in 1986 after having spent 21 years with the Western New York Farm Credit Association. He was active in the United Third Methodist Church of Sodus, the Geriatrics Pilot Association, Rotary International (Paul Harris Fellow), Sodus Lodge No. 392 F&AM and the Stamp Club of Sodus. A memorial service for Paul will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 14 at the Sodus United Third Methodist Church. Military honors will be accorded following the service. There will be a reception immediately following for family and friends. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Adelaide Shepard Spiers, and his sister, Esther Brown. Trombino, Josephine - Josephine L. Trombino of Lyons, age 93, passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at the Living Center South Nursing Home in Geneva, NY. Josephine was born in Jessup, PA on January 20, 1916, the daughter of Bruno Lagana and Giovanna Stillitano Lagana. The majority of her childhood years were spent in Newark, NY. Josephine was married to Frank Anthony Trombino of Lyons, NY on October 10, 1935. She was his loving wife for 47 years. Josephine was an employee of the J.L. Hammett Co. in Lyons for many years and also help her husband in his business, The Lyons Floral Shoppe.  She was a member of St. Michael's Church in Lyons and Our Lady of Peace Parish in Geneva. There will be no prior calling hours. Friends and family are invited to attend a Funeral Mass on Friday, March 13, 2009 at 12 noon at St. Michael's Church, Phelps St., Lyons. Burial will be at the South Lyons Cemetery. She is survived by her son, Frank A. Collins, Madeline M. - Madeline M. Collins, 95, of Newark, died Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at the Wayne County Nursing Home. Mrs. Collins was born on January 13, 1914, in Newark the daughter of Frank and Mary Synesael Wiebeld.  She was a lifelong resident of Newark and communicant of St. Michael’s Church.  She was an attendant at Newark Development Center retiring in 1980. Dederick, Alice Jean N. - Alice Jean N. Dedrick of Marion/Arcade, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009 at the age of 83. Jean was born March 4, 1925 in Salida, Colo., the daughter of Drew and Gladys Norris. She married Jack Parker Dederick on May 27, 1947, and moved to New York, where she raised four children. Jean was an accomplished pianist. She loved flowers, music, birds, crochet, the mountains, sunsets and everything beautiful. She will always be remembered and missed. will be announced at a later date. Jean is predeceased by her parents, her brother Lawrence Ray Norris, in 1998; and her ex-husband of 38 years, Jack Parker Dederick, in 2003. Fagner, Kenneth R.- Kenneth Richard Fagner, 91, of Palmyra, died Friday, March 06, 2009 at the Wayne  County Nursing Home. Mr. Fagner was born the son of the late George and Bertha Mae (Utter) Fagner in Newark on January 16, 1918. He retired from Garlock Corp. after 30 years of service as a Press Operator. Adams, Robert E. - Robert Edward Adams, 83, of Port Gibson, died Sunday, March 8, 2009 at Clifton Springs  Hospital with his family by his side.  Mr. Adams was born the son of the late Wade and Ruth (Pecore) Adams on Nov. 16, 1925 in Cleveland, Ohio. He  retired from Garlock Corp. in Palmyra where worked as a machinist. Mr. Adams was a member of the Port Gibson 
Volunteer Fire Dept. for 50 plus years. He enjoyed working on small engines and wood working. Fishing was a  big part of his life and he was known to tell a joke now and then. Lannon, Margaret Ann - Margaret Ann Lannon, 63, of Port Gibson, died Sunday, March 8, 2009 at Serenity House in Victor with her family by her side. Peg was born the daughter of the late Gustaf and Hazel (Pepper) DeRycke on Sept. 2, 1945 in Newark, NY. She graduated from Newark High School in 1963 and then attended Continental School of Beauty. Peg then opened a beauty salon in the Port Gibson. She was very successful and made many friends through her work. Peg attended Crosscreek Church in Palmyra and Crosswinds Church in Canandaigua. She enjoyed knitting, walking, hunting, camping, baking and the great outdoors. All services will be private. Vanderlyke, Gladys L. - Gladys L. Vanderlyke, 84, of Lyons/Newark, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 6, 2009, after a short illness. Gladys was born July 10, 1924, in Lock Berlin, town of Galen, daughter of George Edward and Emma Jane Wraight Pullen. Gladys lived in Lyons most of her life until she moved to Newark six years ago. As a teen, she was a candy striper at Wayne County Infirmary. She worked for Hickok Manufacturing in Lyons from 1943 to 1947 and from 1947 to 1953 for Hill Brothers of Lyons; from 1953 to 1955 for Garlock of Palmyra; from 1955 to 1962 for Kenmore Machine Products of Lyons; 1969 to 1976 as an aide for Lyons Central School and for several food processing plants in the area before retiring. Hause, Janet M. - Janet M. Hause, 83, of Newark, died on Thursday, March 5, 2009 at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital. Mrs. Hause was born on November 19, 1925 in Newark, the youngest daughter of Ross and Helen “Nell” Grieve Warner. She was a graduate of Rochester Business Institute with a degree in business and accounting. She was a long time employee in the accounting department of Fold-Pac. Janet was a life-long communicant of St. Michael’s Church where she was an active volunteer in many church activities. She had volunteered with the Newark Food Closet, was a girl scout leader, and member of the Arcadia Senior Citizens. Janet was a devoted and caring mother and grandmother. Downey, Herbert L. - Herbert L. Downey, 93, of Newark, died on Wednesday, March 4, 2009. Herbie was born June 9, 1915 in Holley, NY, son of Simon and Louise Downey, the youngest of 11 children. He was the neighborhood Grampa to all the children on the block. He loved to putter and spend time  in his workshop and known for repairing anything that was broken; there was nothing he couldn't fix with duct tape and spare parts. He was a lifelong Yankee's fan and spent much of his time visiting with friends and his numerous grandchildren in his Yankee Clubhouse, built of scrap lumber and cast-off building materials. He also enjoyed gardening, watching Western movies and listening to music. He was an unbeatable champion checker player. Above all, he love to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom will miss him beyond words. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 14 at 3 p.m. at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 E. Miller St., Newark. Fisher, Minna P. - Minna Peck Fisher, 86, of Newark went home to the Lord on Tuesday, March 3, 2009. Mrs. Fisher was born on October 28, 1922 in Port Gibson, the daughter of Howard and Clara Button Peck. She lived and worked the majority of her life in Newark, retiring from C.H. Stuart & Co. Minna’s love for  family was the key focus of her life. At her request, there will be no calling hours. She was a long time employee of Sarah Coventry Jewelry where she became vice president of advertising and public relations, the first woman vice president in direct selling. Mrs. VanTyle also served on the board of directors. After her retirement, she worked at the Armstrong Senior Living. Aileen was a graduate of Upsala College and earned a graduate degree in retailing from Simmons College. She was a 60 year member of the First United Methodist Church in Newark. Aileen had served on the Village of Newark Planning Board and had been a member of the Newark Country Club.   There will be no prior calling hours. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 28 at the First United Methodist Church, South Main St., Newark. Burial will be in Newark Cemetery. Survivored by her children Patricia (Jeffrey) Apfel of Newton, MA, William (Susan) of Newark and Peter of Seneca Falls; grandchildren Russell (Melissa) and Elizabeth VanTyle; Ford, Destin and Colby VanTyle; Miles, Amber and Alexandra Apfel. Devlin, Betty - Betty J. Devlin, 78, of Lyons. died Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at Rochester General Hospital. Mrs. Devlin was born on December 28, 1930, in Newark, the daughter of John and Irene DeCann Lohman. She had worked in the cafeteria at the Lyons High School and was a member of the Lyons United Methodist Church. Betty loved to play cards and bingo. MacKay, Joan E. - Joan E. Mac Kay, 63, of Newark, died on Sunday, February 22, 2009 at the Clifton Springs Hospital after a long illness. Mrs. MacKay was born on November 9, 1945 in Boston, the daughter of the late John and Etta Griffin Benoit. 
She loved to cook. Joan worked in food service at the Armstrong Living Center. She was a member at August  Mauer Post, American Legion and the Arcadia Memorial Post where she was also a bartender and cook. She was  a member of St. Michael Church and the Fairville Volunteer Fire Department. A mass will be announced at a later date. There will be no prior calling hours.

James, Michael W. - Michael W. James, age 42, of Helch Rd., Lyons, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, February 21, 2009. Mike was born August 28, 1966, in Lyons, a son to John M. and Doris Yonker James. He was a Veteran of the Navy from 1986 to 1990 and a member of the Lyons VFW War Dads, a member of the Lyons Rotary, Ducks Unlimited, Lyons Elks (BPOE), active in the community and was the President of JAMKO Technical Solutions, Inc., JAMKO Industrial Service and JAMKO International. He especially enjoyed the Stillwater Reservoir in the Adirondacks, enjoyed golfing, snowmobiling and boating. Chapman, Dorothy Alice Lewis - Dorothy A. Lewis Chapman of Palmyra died on Monday, February 23, 2009 at the age of 93. Cuyler, Russell I.  Russell I. Cuyler, 92, formerly of Lyons and Newark, died on Friday. February 20, 2009, at his home in Clifton Springs. Mr. Cuyler was born on June 6, 1916 in Newark, the son of John and Alta Cuyler. He worked for C.H. Stuart, Inc., where he was the president of Empire Nursery for many years. When they closed, he became manager of the jewelry manufacturing operation, retiring in 1971. Russ served in the Navy during World War II, stationed in New Guinea, where he was a supply clerk. He was a life member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Newark and was very active in many church functions. He had been a member of the Newark Country Club. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark. Burial will be in East Newark Cemetery. Russ is survived by his wife of 69 years, Barbara, two nieces Nancy Cuyler and Susan Swain, and long time family friends David DiRaddo and Marquita Peterson of Penfield. Waterman, Norman O. - Norman O. Waterman, 87, Lakeland, FL formerly of Newark, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009. Norm was born in Fredonia, NY on August 22, 1921. He grew up in Gerry, NY on the family farm. After he finished school he used his talent as a carpenter doing remodeling. Norm, his wife and children moved to Rochester in the early 60’s when he accepted a job as a cabinet maker for Axelrod Wood Products. He also was very involved with all the finishing wood work in the mall area of Midtown Plaza. The funeral home proudly flies the Army Flag in honor of his service to our country during WWII. Casteel, Karisa M. - Karisa Marie Casteel, 22, of Palmyra, died Thursday, February 19, 2009 at the Clifton Springs Hospital with her family by her side. She battled a lifelong history of medical ailments. Karisa was born the daughter of William Casteel and Michelle Tremfer on June 13, 1986 in Newark, NY. She attended Roosevelt School, Clifton Springs Schools and Midlakes BOCES. Karisa had a favorite teddy bear which sang “Love” and she also enjoyed country music. Morse, Curtis R. Morse - Curtis R. Morse, age 89, formerly of Marion, passed away Thursday, February 19, 2009 at home while in Florida. Curt was born February 10, 1920 in Rochester, a son to Floyd R. and Lillian Curtis Morse. He was a veteran of the Army during WWII and the Korean War. He retired in Rochester at Edison Technical School. He was an active member of the Lyons Ward at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Colf, Kenneth B. - Kenneth B. Colf, 84, of Newark, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009 at his home on Sandhill Road. Honoring his request, there will be no calling hours or funeral service.  Private burial services will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Canandaigua at the convenience of the family. Mr. Colf was born on July 12, 1924 in Canandaigua, the son of Augustus and Dusie Wirth Colf.  A welder and mechanic by trade, Ken owned and operated a gas and service station in Palmyra for many years.  He retired in 1986, from the Newark Auto Parts store where he was manager for several years.  He was a member of the Zion Episcopal Church and had been a member of the Moose Club in Palmyra . He is survived by two daughters Patricia (Donald) Barcomb of Newark and Nancy (Stuart) Wood of Macedon, three grandchildren William (Kerri) Barcomb of  Marion, IN, Madeleine and Elliot Wood of Macedon, two sisters Evelyn (Bennie) Sharp of Walworth and Carol (Gary) Mortensen of Addison, several nieces and nephews.  Ken was predeceased by his wife Ruth in 2005, a son Donald in 1962 and a grandson Brian Barcomb in 2004, three brothers and one sister.

Charles was born in Healt, Arkansas on October 19, 1943, son of Willie and Louise Houston Murphy. He worked for James Walker Construction in Rochester. Services at the convenience of the family. Van Winkle, Gerald A. “Rip”  - Rochester/Newark--- Gerald Van Winkle, 55, of Rochester/Newark, entered into rest on Wednesday. February 11, 2009, after a long illness with family and friends at his side. Mr. Van Winkle was born on January 4, 1954 in Newark, the son of Albert and Nina Murray Van Winkle.  He was the grounds supervisor at the Pines of Perinton for many years.  He joined the US Army in 1972, serving two years before receiving a medical discharge.  Rip loved the outdoors, camping and most of all his family. Schutt, Elaine  - Elaine Schutt, 67, of Phelps, died Sunday, February, 15, 2009 at Strong Memorial Hospital. Elaine worked on the assembly line for Parker Hannifin in Clyde. Camping and fishing was a favorite time for Elaine. However spending time with her family was special and very important for her. VanGorder, Wayne H. - Wayne Harl VanGorder, 78, of Newark,  died Sunday, February 15, 2009 at Strong Memorial Hospital. Wayne was born the son of the late Harl and Elizabeth (DeRidder) VanGorder on October 7, 1930 in Newark, NY. He was a graduate of Newark High in 1948. Farman “Ben”, Floyd B. - Floyd “Ben” Benjamin Farman, 88, of Newark, made the transition from this life to the next on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at the DeMay Living Center. Ben was born the son of the late James and Lydia (Jordon) Farman on June 13, 1920 in Lyons, NY. He retired from Garlock Corp. in Palmyra where he was an office supervisor in sales. He had also worked as a security guard for the Finger Lakes Race Track. Then he worked as a Senior Companion for the Finger Lakes DDSO Tymeson Day Program. Ben was a life member of the Newark VFW and Phelps American Legion. He was also a member of the Newark Elks Lodge # 1249. Ben will be remembered for his kindness and compassion. McKown, Daniel, S.- Daniel S. McKown, 53, of Waterloo, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at home. Miller, Evelyn L. - Evelyn L. Miller, 89, of Newark, died Monday, February 9, 2009 at Clifton Springs Hospital, after a brief illness, with her loving family by her side. Simmons, Kurt W. -  Kurt W. Simmons, 23, of Lyons, went to be with our Lord on Friday, February 6, 2009. Kurt was born October 30, 1985 in Newark, the son to Scott and Margaret Cipriano Simmons. He was a graduate  of the Lyons High School in 2004 and a graduate at SUNY Cortland in 2008 with a major in communications and theatre, and a minor in Spanish. Kurt was involved with the Lyons Fire Department, a member of Lyons High  School baseball, football, wrestling, a member of the National Honor Society and active in theatre and music

Jones, Sr., David James  - David James Jones Sr., 71, of Newark,  died Sunday, February 8, 2009 at his home with his family by his side. Dave was born the son of the late John and Cora Huntley Jones in Syracuse, NY on Nov. 13, 1937. He graduated from Solvay High School in 1955 and then attended a trade school. He was an Executive for Ryder Truck Rental before establishing Universal Painting and Decorating and then Universal Remodeling. Dave was an avid hunter, fisherman and enjoyed the great outdoors. Chris was born in Newark, on February 10, 1983, the son of John P. and Patricia VanDamme O'Connor. He attended Newark High School and was a member of St. Michael's Church. Chris was a carpenter working for his father at John P. O'Connor Construction. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed snowmobiling. Johnson, Larry Edward - Larry Johnson formerly of Newark, passed away on Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at his home in East Aurora, NY. Larry was born on April 16, 1945 in Newark, son of Cornelius and Mildred (Vanderbrook) Johnson. Following high school graduation in 1965, Larry entered the US Air Force, where he spent part of his tour in Greece.  When he returned to the States, he trained and worked as a jet engine mechanic in Illinois, Florida and Maryland until he left the service six years later.  He then returned to Newark and worked in the plumbing/heating business, followed by self-employment and retirement. Family and friends are welcomed to attend his graveside services on Saturday, February 14 at the Newark Cemetery at 1 p.m.  A reception, hosted by the deacons, will follow in the lounge of the Park Presbyterian Church, 110 Maple Court, Newark. Larry was predeceased by his parents, Cornelius in 1987 and Mildred in 2007.  He is survived by his daughter, Sara of Ashburn, VA, a brother Rick (Bev) Johnson of Lyons, many cousins, six nephews and three nieces. Ortiz, Rafael Jr. "Ralph" - Rafael "Ralph" Ortiz Jr. of Rochester, died in Highland Hospital on February 2nd, 2009, after being diagnosed with cancer the previous week. He was born in Newark, NY, on May 27, 1956, was baptized a Catholic and served as an altar boy. He was a graduate of Newark High School. Ralph was a well known and highly respected musician, having played bass with Rochester bands Mother Freedom and Saratoga in the mid-1970s and early 80s, as well as Syracuse based band, Dave Hanlon's Cookbook. He briefly moved to Puerto Rico, but returned to play with Chet Catallo & Cats, Kicks, MCA recording artist Cabo Frio, the Bandits, and many others. In 1996, he co-founded Prime Time Funk with longtime friend Jim Richmond, and currently played with PTF and Offshoot Hot Sweets. He has been a bass teacher at Northfield Music in Pittsford for more than 20 years and one of the most respected bass players in Upstate NY. Ralph has recorded many regional & national commercials, including music for HBO and an Arthur Ash documentary. He also performed on the Arsenio Hall show with Cabo Frio, and backed up several well-known artists at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Club in Paris. Covey, Elwood - Elwood D. "Woody". Covey, 87, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009. Mr. Covey was born in Williamson, NY. He was a caretaker at the State School for handicapped children in Newark, NY. Mr. Covey became a Boy Scout Master in East Palmyra and Newark, NY; and was a member of the 1 st Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. As a veteran he was a member of the VFW. Mr. Covey and his, wife, Helen, were foster parents. After retirement, Mr. Covey moved to Leesburg, FL and in 1996 to The Villages, FL. She was a long time member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Sodus, was a retiree from the Wayne County Department of Social Services, had been actively involved in her church, the Twig Association of Myers Community Hospital, the Monday Club, and Scouting. Zakour, Michael 'Mike' - Michael "Mike" Zakour, 82, of Geneva/Newark passed away Friday, January 16, 2009 surrounded by his loving family at Geneva General Hospital. The family received friends Sunday, January 18 at the Palmisano Funeral Home, Inc. The American Legion Winnek Post 396 met at the funeral home. A military service was provided by the American Legion and V.F.W. Post 6433 of Waterloo. Trisagion prayers were held. Funeral services were held Monday, January 19 at St. Michael's Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church with the Rev. Fr. Gregory Murphy officiating. Mike was born in Geneva and was a son of the late John and Sadie (Solomon) Zakour. He served in the United States Marine Corps - 1st Division during World War II and saw action in Okinawa. Afterwards, he developed and operated Zakour Graphics. Mike joined C.H. Stuart as an advertising executive and worked there for many years. Many will remember Mike for his passion for drawing and painting and his many acts of kindness. He was a member of the American Legion Winnek Post 396 and a former Rotarian in Newark. Mike was a member of St. Michael's Orthodox Church. Cole, Kathleen M. - Kathleen M. Cole, 64,  of Port Gibson, died on Monday, January 19, 2009, at her home. Mrs. Cole was born on November 27, 1944 in Auburn, the daughter of the late Arthur and Blanche Hastings Lannon.  Kathy grew up  in Clifton Spring and graduated from Clifton Springs High School.  She attended the First Baptist Church in Manchester and was a member of the Palmyra Moose Club.  Kathy had worked at Clifton Springs Hospital, Rochester General Hospital, Mobil Chemical, Dunkin Donuts when they opened in Newark and as home health care aide.  The thing she loved best was babysitting for her grandchildren. DeRidder, Zachary T. - Zachary T. DeRidder, 24, of Lyons, died Sunday, January 18, 2009 at the House of John in Clifton Springs after a courageous battle with cancer. Zachary was born July 30, 1984 in Geneva and was employed by J. Young Builders in Clyde. He was a graduate of Lyons High School in 2001, was involved in track, cross country, was the captain of the wrestling team and was a tri-athlete. He had his student pilots license and was an Eagle Scout with Silver Palm at Troop 111 in Sodus. Zachary had secured his two year mission for the Latter Day Saints Church in Las Vegas and was a member of the Lyons Ward. Murphy, Flora McGregor  - Flora passed away peacefully on January 10, 2009, at age 91 after a short illness. For 30 years she was a partner, with her husband Edwin (deceased), in the Murphy Studio of Photography, Sodus, and active in photographic organizations at the Finger Lakes and state level. After retirement, Flora and Ed continued to reside in Sodus, while spending 5 months each year and making many friends in the Palmetto Mobile Home Park in Florida. Flora was a longtime member and past matron of Sodus Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and a past district deputy grand matron of Wayne District, Order of the Eastern Star, as well as a member of Zama Temple Daughters of the Nile, Rochester. A charter member of Sodus Women of Rotary, she was honored by Sodus Rotary Club and named a Paul Harris Fellow in 1996. She served on the Board of Directors of the Myers Community Hospital for 5 years and on its Community Relations Committee for many years. Flora was also a charter member of the auxiliary of Wallington Volunteer Fire Company and of the auxiliary to Sodus V.F.W. Post 07171. She was a 40+ year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, a member of Sodus Bay Historical Society, and a docent at the Sodus Point Light House. She attended St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Palmetto, Florida, and served on its Altar Guild. From 2007, Flora made her home at Rockynol Retirement Community near her beloved family in Akron, Ohio. She is survived by her son, Martin, daughter-in-law, Doni, and grandson, Brian, all of Akron, and many dear nieces and nephews.  A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 24, at 2 pm in Saint John’s Episcopal Church, Sodus. Ververs, Lillian - Lillian Ververs, 70, of Whiting, Manchester, NJ, formerly of New Port Ritchey, FL, passed peacefully with her family at her side, Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at the Van Dyke Hospice Center in Toms River, NJ after battling emphysema for four years. Rogers, Richard E. - Richard E. Rogers Jr., 53, of Oswego/Newark, died on Monday, January 5, 2009 at his home in Minetto. Mr. Rogers was born on April 29, 1955 in Newark, the son of Richard and Connie Barnaba Rogers.  He was a 1974 graduate of Newark High School and had attended the University of West Virginia and Ithaca College.  He loved drums.  Rick gave drum lessons and made custom crafted drums. At the age of eleven, he started with the C.F. Palmer Fife and Drum Corp. and later played with the Savannah Cellar Savers. He has been associated with countless drum and bugle corps, including the Geneva Apple Knockers and the Watkins Glen Squires.  Most recently, Rick had been with the Ghost Rider Mini-Corp and the Rochester Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corp where he was a drum instructor and percussion arranger.  He had a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and also enjoyed playing in a volleyball league.  Richard had been working for the Stewart Shop in Minetto.  Friends called on Friday, Jan. 9, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Paul L. Bach, Michael O. - Michael O. Bach, 55, formerly of Old Newark Rd., Lyons, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009 at the DeMay Living Center. Michael was born in Munich, Germany, February 2, 1953, son of Heinz and Christel Motzkus Bach. He had worked at Seneca Foods in Newark, and also at Fold Pak of Newark. He was a resident of DeMay Living Center for 15 years. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Lyons, attended Lyons High School, and was a manager for the football team for a number of years. Friends may Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the Boeheim-Pusateri Funeral Home, 77 William St., Lyons. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Arthur Sziemeister presiding. Burial in South Lyons Cemetery. Memorials to DeMay Living Center in care of the VanTassel Unit, or to a charity of one's choice. Cuthbert, Lyle E. - Lyle Ensley Cuthbert, 51, of Lyons died on Saturday, January 10, 2009. All services will be private. Interment in Sodus Cemetery. In memory Lyle please consider donations to a charity of choice. Lyle was born the son of Lyle and Clara VanDerBrook Cuthbert on August 2, 1957 in Sodus, NY. A self taught artist, he painted many murals including Noah’s Ark at the Alton Gospel Tabernacle and many scenic paintings on residential garage doors in and throughout Wayne County. Lyle enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was quick to make one smile with his humorous personality. Wilson, Walter O. - Walter O. Wilson, 80, of Newark, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2009 peacefully at his home with his family by his side. There will be no prior calling hours. Martin, Orville, J. - Orville James Martin,93, of Newark, died Tuesday, January 6, 2009. He is now with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and his wife Elizabeth Stell of 56 years, his parents, John and Ethel and his faithful companion, Dolly, his dog. He was always full of life and ready for the next dance. He led an unusually active and fulfilling life. Orville loved to travel and was a “road warrior,” making his annual trek to the University of Notre Dame football game, several trips to the northeast, west and southern United States. In most recent years, with his devoted companion and dance partner, Ruth Brown, they traveled to Arizona. He loved playing golf and did so in many areas of the country. He was always up for a good rummy game. He retired from Eastman Kodak Company in 1976 as an Industrial Engineer. He then served for eight years as the Town of Arcadia Supervisor and 12 years on the Newark School Board. He was very active as a Conservative Democrat in the Wayne County Democrat Committee. He was a life long communicant of St. Michael Church in Newark. He valued his fraternal relationships as a 74 year member of the Newark Knights of Columbus and more than a 50 year member of the Newark Elks Lodge and Newark Grange. Orville served as Treasurer for the Finger Lakes Golf Association for a number of years. He will be sadly missed by his son, James (Catherine); daughters Joslyn (Burnell James) Henson; and Jacqueline Spiegel; grandchildren Carrie (Carlos) Chapa; Michael Martin; Daniel (Kristy) Henson; Kimberly McRobbie; Jeremy Henson; Lisa (John) Williams; Thomas (Eileen Venuti); William Spiegel; Robert (Elizabeth) Spiegel; great grandchildren Michael and David Chapa; Sarah and Sean McRobbie; Kristen, Matthew, and Michael Williams; Sean, Kathryn, Timothy and Colleen Spiegel and Amelia and Addison Henson; a very special and devoted niece and husband, Marcia (Engels) and C. Miller, Andrew W. - Andrew Miller, 56, of Newark/Lyons, died on Sunday, January 4, 2009. Mr. Miller was born December 4, 1952, in Lyons the son of J. Marvin and Ruth Anderson Miller.  He was a 1971 graduate of Lyons High School and had attended R.I.T.  He had owned and operated Miller Signs in Newark for many years. Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Kidder, Grace B. - Grace Bernadine Kidder, 80, of Newark, died suddenly Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008 in Clifton Springs Hospital with her loving family by her side.
