Rose, Marguerite A. - Marguerite A. Rose of Palmyra, died Friday, June 26, 2009 at the age of 92 Mrs. Rose was born June 30, 1916 in Alloway, the daughter of William and Emma Malchow Rose. She was a graduate of Clyde High School and retired from the Newark Developmental Disabilities Services Office after 37 years of service. Mrs. Rose was a faithful member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Newark. Family and friends are invited to call from 11 to 1 a.m. Wednesday, July 1 at the Robert L. Yost Funeral Home, Inc., at 123 W. Main St. in Palmyra, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Lyons Rural Cemetery. Mrs. Rose was predeceased by her sisters, Mabel Kise, Gertrude Gunkler, Mary Lane and Helen Noble, and brothers, William and John Rose. She will be missed by her nieces and nephews and their families, Margaret Brand of Waterloo, Mary Jane Ahearn of Auburn, Mary Eleanor Richie of Ohio, Charles Kise of Waterloo and Robert (Marge) Gunkler of Phelps. Alday, Alice (Holt) - Alice Portukalian Holt Alday, 98, of Williamson, died Monday, June 29, 2009 in Aiken, S.C. Born December 26, 1910 in New York/ She was the daughter of the late Martin and Mary Portukalian. A retired owner and operator of Locust Lane Stables in Webster, Alice was a member of Union Hill Methodist Church and was married to the late Alton Marion Aldway. Calling hours will not be observed. Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service at Webster Rural Cemetery on Tuesday, July 7 at 1 p.m. Survivors include her daughter Linda (Merle) VanGee of Williston, S.C.; step-daughter, Sue (Ed) Witt of Clifton Springs; step-son James (Gretchen) Alday of Honeoye Falls; grandchildren, Christine VanGee (Jeff) Towner, Rene (Dale) Richmond, Matthew (Carla) VanGee and Christopher Alday; 5 great-grandchildren and a number of great-great grandchildren. Schutt, Alma - Alma Schutt, 93, of Newark, died Saturday, June 27, 2009 at DeMay Living Center. Elma was born in Manchester on February 29, 1916, the daughter of Fred and Lena Thompson Merkley. In her earlier years, she worked for Perfection Foods. She had lived on Madison Street in Newark at one time. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 30 at 2 p.m. at Schulz-Pusateri Funeral Home, 103 Maple Court, Newark with Rev. Dan Benedict. Burial will be in Palmyra Cemetery. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice. Survivors include her daughter-in-law Emma Perez of Newark; nephew Carl B. Norsen of Palmyra; other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Seymour in 1978 and sons Melvin and John Ford VanDyke.

Nelson, Michael "Slim" "Polk" - Michael  Nelson of Williamson, died June 15, 2009 at the age of 68. Formerly of Ontario, he went home to his Lord.  Family and friends called from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 22 at Norton Funeral Home at 45 W. Main St. in Sodus. Gaston,  Robert J. - Robert James Gaston, 81, of Newark, died Sunday, June 21, 2009 at the Newark-Wayne Community 
Hospital. Mr. Gaston was born the son of the late LeRoy and Helen (Carpenter) Gaston on August 24, 1927 in  Newark, NY. He was very proud to have served his country in the US Marine Corp. In 1986 after 43 years he retired from FoldPac as a Machine Operator. Mr. Gaston was a member of the National Rifle Association of America and past member of the Rod 
and Gun Club in Newark. He was a proud NYS Hunter Safety Instructor for over 46 years. In the  early ‘60s he took first place in NYS Skeet Shooting. His father, LeRoy, Robert and his son David all qualified as expert marksman. The funeral home proudly flies the Marine Corp. Flag in honor of his service to our country during WWII. Family and friends may call Friday, June 26 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Norman L. Waterman Funeral Home, Inc., 124 W. Miller St., Newark. Safford, Walter H. - Walter H. Safford, 88, of Newark, died Saturday, June  20, 2009 at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital. Walter was born in Owls Head, NY, April 20, 1921, the son of Frank and Gladys Lester Safford. He was a truck driver all his life and was a member of the teamsters local. He had driven in his earlier years for Bero Construction in Waterloo. He served in the Army in World War II and in the European Theatre. He was a life member of the VFW and the American Legion of Newark. Friends may call Monday, June 22 from 4-7 p.m. at Schulz-Pusateri Funeral Home, 103 Maple Court, Newark. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Carlos Smith. Burial in Newark Cemetery with full military rites accorded. Walter has seen five generations, three times in his life. Manor, Florence - Florence Manor, 92, of Newark/Auburn, formerly of Peirson Avenue Newark, died Thursday, June 18, 2009 at the Finger Lakes Center for Living in Auburn where she has lived for the past fourteen years.   Mrs. Manor, the daughter of late John and Julia Kon, was born on August 3, 1916, in Oswego, where she lived until before moving to Newark in 1960.  She was a communicate of St. Michael’s Church.  Florence was a self-employed Real Estate Broker in Newark from1961 to 1982. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Peter Clifford at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24 at St. Michael Church in Newark. Perry, Naomi L. - Naomi L. Perry, 87, formerly of Phelps and Lyons Manor, died Thursday, June 18, 2009 at the Wayne County Nursing Home. Naomi was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia, July 28,1921, daughter of Charles & Pearl Triggs Taylor. She had worked in her earlier years for Parker Hannifin in Lyons, in a video store in Newark and for Dobbins Drugs. She was a member of St. Michael’s Church in Lyons, its Women’s Club and the Fresh Air Fund, for which she received many awards. She was involved with the Golden Agers on trips, and the Women’s Democratic Club. Naomi was always good for a joke and a little wit that went with her. She was a foster grandparent in the Lyons school and also St. Michael’s school in Newark. Friends may call Sunday 2-5 p.m. at Boeheim-Pusateri Funeral Home, 77 William St., Lyons. Reeves, Higbee, Linda D. - Linda D. Higbee Reeves of Castroville, Texas died Saturday, April 18, 2009 at Vistas Hospice in San Antonio, Texas, following an extended illness at the age of 58. She was predeceased by her husband, Erwin “Les” Higbee, in 2004; her parents, Lawrence E. Reeves, of Pennsylvania, and Jean Cornell Reeves Sipes, of Newark; and brothers Lawrence E. Jr., of Lyons, and Robert Reeves, of Texas.
She is survived by her brothers and sisters, Barbara (Edward) Meeks, Shirley (David) Lancaster, and Judy Smith-Wise, all of Newark; Elaine Manes, Mary (Charles) Weekly, all of Alabama; Michael Sipes and wife Debbie Jinks of Newark. Mrs. Higbee is also survived by Steven Reeves, Dee Ann Reeves, Sandy Jo (Richard) Vanderpool, Debbie Reeves and Ronnie Sue (Scott) Kissell, all of Tonawanda, PA; stepsister, Diane; brother Arthur B. Ver Heecke, James, A. - James A. Ver Heecke, 67, of Newark, died Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at the Clifton Springs Hospital.  Mr. Ver Heecke was born on August 26, 1941, in Rochester, the son of Edmund and Marguerite Van Heck Ver Heecke.  He retired in 1995 from Mobil Chemical where he had worked in the Employee Relations Department for 35 years. Jim attended Williamson High School transferring to Newark Central High in his sophomore year.  He graduated in 1959.  From 1960 to 1963, he served in the US Army.  Jim married Sharon Kasprowicz on July 14, 1962.   Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 18 at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark.  Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 19 at the funeral home with Pat Albrecht officiating.  Burial will be in East Newark Cemetery. Hayden, Jean Esther Anderson - Jean Esther Anderson Hayden, age 70, of Fern Park, passed away May 31, 2009. She is finally home after a long battle with cancer. She was born on February 18, 1939 in Lyons, NY to Mr. and Mrs. Robert and Florence Anderson. She is survived by her beloved husband of 45 years R. Fisk Hayden; son Steve Hayden (Angie) of Lake Mary, daughter Susan Turner (Tim) of Maitland. Also, her mother, Florence Anderson of Lyons, NY; brother Richard Anderson of Webster, NY and sister, Kathy DeSain, of Lockport, NY; and numerous nieces and nephews. She has three grandchildren which have been the best medicine she received over the years; Jeffrey & Faith Hayden, and Hayden Turner. She moved from Syracuse, NY to Fern Park in 1979. She received her B.S. in Education from State Univ. of NY at Brockport and her M.A. in Counseling from University of Central Florida. She taught Physical Education in NY, English Estates Elementary, Rock Lake Middle School, and Greenwood Lakes Middle School. In 1989 she became a Guidance Counselor at Deltona High School where she was chosen Counselor of the year. She was a cancer patient at MD Anderson Orlando after a mastectomy and a year of chemotherapy 26 years earlier. Cancer returned in her late 60s and she spent almost 3 years of chemo. She volunteered as a CanSermount Program leader ACS, where she could use her valuable talents gained from numerous grief and loss groups and programs. She also volunteered for Hospice and American Cancer Society. She was an amazing warrior and will be sorely missed by so many who loved her. A Memorial Service was held at Saint Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 526 North Park Avenue, Winter Park. Afterwards, all were invited to her favorite spot, the Breakers, in New Smyrna Beach, where she will be released. Bring your kites! In lieu of flowers, take a friend to lunch or make memorial contributions to Metastatic Breast Cancer Research, Children’s Cancer or invest in your children.

Soper, Robert Louis - Robert Louis Soper, Jr. 76, died Sunday, May 24, 2009 after a heroic 10 year battle with blindness, heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease, diabetes, paralysis of right arm and leg, the result of agent orange encounters during two tours of duty in Vietnam. Bob was born at home in Newark, N.Y. on September 26, 1933, to Robert L. and F. Marie (Schramm) Soper, Sr. He graduated from Perkins Elementary and Newark Jr./Sr. High School Class of 1951. Prior to his senior year he qualified for entrance to the United States Military Academy; West Point, N.Y. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1955, where it was noted in the yearbook ''there is a right way, a wrong way and the Soper Method." Bob met and married the love of his life, Bertie "Kim" Wilson in 1956, while stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. Bertie was a life companion traveling with Bob to many duty stations. Bob was a tank commander, Ranger, Air Born, Green Beret and Quarter Master during his 22 years in the U.S. Army. He earned his Master's Degree from the Navy Post Graduate School in Monteray, California in 1967. He was Professor of Classic Nuclear Physics at West Point from 1969 to 1972. Bob served in Korea, Europe, Vietnam and throughout the United States. He retired in 1977. After retiring he worked for Bell Helicoptor in Texas and Saudi Arabia. He moved to Midland, Texas with Bertie in 1993. Funeral Services for Bob were held Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Jackie Warren Funeral Home Chapel, 702 S. Terrell with the Rev. Terry Johnson officiating. Burial followed. Pallbearers John Soper, son; Military Honor Guard Bill Edward USMA Class 55, Bill Haas USMA Class 55; Thomas Auger USMA Class 55. Dr. Gary Newsome USMA Class. Honorary Pallbearers Martin C. Meissner, George Halshire, Jim Lewis and Chuck Soper, brother. Survivors include his wife Bertie of Midland; sons Thomas Wayne and Ramona Soper of Colorado; John Lawrence Soper of Midland; his sister Gale M. and Robert Pallissard, Mesquit. Nevada; brother Charles S. and Carol Soper, Verona, New York, and Matthew W. and Joan Soper, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; Arthur Wilson, John and Dorthy Wilson and children Coral, Lynn and Larry all of Midland.

DiSanto, Lorie Ann - Lorie Ann Di Santo, 49, of Newark, died Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at Rochester General Hospital. Lorie was born on May 21, 1960 in Lyons, the daughter of Calvin and Ethel Bates Wright.  She was a graduate of Mynderse Academy in Seneca Falls and at one time had worked at Spinco Medal Products in Newark. Friends may call from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 13 at the Paul L. Greenberg, Robert D. - Robert D. Greenberg, 65, died on Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at the Homestead Nursing Home in Penn Yan, NY. Bob was born on May 13, 1944 in Bronx, NY, the son of Ralph and Florence Shapiro Greenberg. He grew up in Ashtabula, Ohio and achieved a bachelor’s degree from Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He continued at the University of Rochester teaching history while he completed a master’s degree in history.  Bob was the co-founder and co-director of the Rochester Genesee Valley History Project. He received a Masters of Social Work and Masters of Public Administration at Syracuse University. Mr. Greenberg worked as a Counselor at Crossroads Halfway House in Rochester . The Executive Director of the Livingston County Council on Alcoholism, he was also the director of the Ottie Hall halfway house in Newark. He helped many people in their recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. Known for his great sense-of-humor, Bob enjoyed gardening, camping and time spent with his family. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 13 at 3 p.m. on NY Route 90 across from Fire Lane 14, north of Union Springs.   Robert is survived by his wife of 44 years Susan; a son William J. Sapp, Janice"Jan" - Janice "Jan" Sapp, 72, of Sapp Road, Lyons, died Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital. Jan was born in Newark on April 17, 1937, the daughter of the late Henry & Mary Jansen Kotvis. Jan worked in her earlier years at Sarah Coventry from 1954-1971 and worked as a secretary in the district office for the Lyons Central School for over 20 years. She was a long-time member of Eureka Grange of Lyons where she held many offices. She was a member of St. Michael's Church of Lyons. She was a graduate of Newark High class of 1954. She was a charter member of the Fairville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Friends may call Friday, June 12 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Boeheim-Pusateri Funeral Home, 77 William St., Lyons. Murch, John H. - John H. Murch, 83, of Storms Rd., Lyons, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, June 8, 2009. John was born June 2, 1926 in Rochester, a son to Charles F. and Winifred Schaffer Murch. He was a WWII veteran of the Army and was a member of American Legion 227 and Lyons VFW Post 5092. He was a member of the Teamsters Union and was employed as a truck driver through-out his life. Chiazza, Mary - Mary Chiazza, 85, of Newark, died Monday, June 8, 2009, at the Newark Manor Nursing Home. Mrs. Chiazza was born on January 29, 1924, in Newark, the daughter of Joseph and Rose Fioti Salatino. A life long resident of Newark, she was a communicant of St. Michael Church. Clark, Roger H. - Roger H. Clark, 89, of Newark, died Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at Blossom View Nursing Home in Sodus. Mr. Clark was born on March 9, 1920 in Newark, the son of the late Horatio and Edith Schultz Clark. He farmed and worked as a truck driver before being employed by the Newark School District for 21 years. At the school, he was a bus driver and maintenance worker, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Park Presbyterian Church. Roger served in the Army during World War II and was a member of the Winnek Post American Legion in Geneva and the Newark Masonic Lodge #83. He was an avid bowler and a member of ABC Bowling Assoc. Roger also enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting and many card games. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 6 at the Park Presbyterian Church, Maple Court, Newark. Burial will be Newark Cemetery. He is survived by his son William (Joan) of Newark; daughter Shirley (William) Hoot of Joy; four grandchildren, Christopher (Shelly), Jonathan and Sara Ann Hoot, Miranda Clark; two great grandchildren, Andrew and Caiden Hoot; a sister Elenor Rising of Newark; several nieces and nephews. Parker, Gary W. - Gary W. Parker of Port Gibson/Lyons, died suddenly May 31, 2009 as the result of a motorcycle accident in the town of Hector at the age of 46. Family and friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 5 at the Robert L. Yost Funeral Home, Inc. at 123 W. Main St., in Palmyra. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 6 in the Port Gibson Cemetery. Gary is survived by his sons Gary W. Parker Jr. and Andrew Parker; mother, Gail (Harold) Bean; brothers Karl (Judy), Michael, Larry (Amy) and Darrin Parker and step-mother, Dolores "Pokey" Parker. He was predeceased by his father, Lawrence P. Parker, on May 3, 2000.

Drake, Jack - Jack Drake of North Creek Road, Palmyra, died May 26, 2009 at the Clifton Springs Nursing Home, following a period of declining health. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 3024 Cooley Rd., Canandaigua, New York. Born in Akron, Ohio on November 10, 1919, Jack grew up during the heart of the Depression. His college education at the University of Akron was interrupted by World War II. He served in the Philippines as a U.S. Army medic, and was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. Upon his return from service, Jack completed his undergraduate degree, and earned graduate degrees in Speech Therapy and Audiology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and the University of Iowa. While in Boulder, he met Jeanne Odell of Kendrick, Oklahoma. They married in 1951. Jack and Jeanne moved to Wapello, Iowa and started their family. The family moved to Palmyra In 1965, when Jack began working as an audiologist for the University of Rochester Medical School. After Jack retired In 1983, he and Jeanne enjoyed traveling around the world, making trips to Australia, South Africa, Ireland, and Belize. They also volunteered countless hours in the community, serving organizations such as Meals on Wheels, the Palmyra Kings Daughters Library, and the Town and Village of Palmyra. Besides travel, Jack's interests included maintaining his property and bowling in leagues in Palmyra and Canandaigua. He was a founding member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Canandaigua. He valued hard work and logical thinking, but disdained small-mindedness and hypocrisy. Jack was predeceased by Jeanne last November. He is remembered with pride and love by his children and their spouses: Albert Drake and Susan Karre of Palmyra, Randy and Anna Drake of Ordinary, Virginia, and Lorrie Drake, Brad Helfer; and beloved granddaughters, Elizabeth and Rebecca Heifer of New Durham, New Hampshire. Shoales, George H. - George H. Shoales of Williamson, much beloved husband, uncle and a dear friend to so many, died peacefully May 31, 2009. George was born in Marion on April 6, 1917. He ran a plumbing and heating business. In later years his creative talents surfaced with beautiful watercolor landscapes and wonderful stories and newspaper articles. Hef enjoyed researching the local history of Marlon and Williamson which were always colored with his unique and wonderful sense of humor. He was an avid fisherman and woodsman, which he shared with his brother, John and more recently his nephew, Ed. He also enjoyed gardenIng and was in the process of preparing yet another garden for he summer. George, with Lila, were part of a writing club for which he had just completed short stories on writers. George was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Army Air Corps. At George's request, calling hours will not be observed and the courtesy of no flowers. Friends are invited to a Memorial service to be held Saturday, June 6 at the United Church of Marion at 1 p.m. He is survived by his loving wife, Lila. They recently celebrated with family, his 92nd birthday and 72 years of marriage. Also survived by his sister, Louise and sisters-in-law, Elbi and Fern. Although George and Lila didn't have children themselves, they are loved dearly as Uncle and Aunt by their many nieces and nephews and are considered second parents by many. Blessed to live nearby and have George and Lila in their lives are nieces, Jenny, Kathy. Laurie, Cindy and Linda; nephews Steve, Bob, John, Elwin and Ed; and grand-niece, Brie. Hamelinck, Paul O. - One of the most resilient people to have known, Paul Owen Hamelinck, 57, of Newark, died Thursday, May 21, 2009 at Strong Memorial Hospital from the result of an automobile accident. Paul was born the son of the late John (1987) and Carolyn Trask (2008) Hamelinck on July 19, 1951 in Newark, NY. He was a 1969 graduate of Newark High School. As a warehouse supervisor, he worked for Pactiv Corp. in Canandaigua. Paul treasured his time with grandchildren, going to auctions and working on lawn tractors with his son and riding his motorcycle with family. VanHanegen, Raymond C. - Raymond C. VanHanegen, age 65 of Waddell Rd., Clifton Springs, passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2009 in the comfort and privacy of his home with his loving wife and daughters by his side. Raymond was born July 2, 1943 in Newark, NY the son of the late John VanHanegen and Elsie M. VanCassele. Dickens, Foster - Foster Dickens, 86, of Bath, NY, formerly of Port Gibson, died Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at the Ira Davenport Hospital in Bath. Foster was born April 23, 1923 in Clifton Springs, NY, the son of James and Harriet McClouth Dickens. After serving in World War II, he settled in Port Gibson with wife, Dorothy, and daughter, Candice.. After his retirement from Newark Developmental Center, he and Dorothy moved to Florida, After 10 years, they moved to Pennsylvania to be near their daughter. Alvaro, Louise - Louise Alvaro, 96, died Thursday, May 21, 2009, at the Hughes Health and Rehab Center in West Hartford, Connecticut. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday (May 25, 2009) in the East Newark Cemetery. Mrs. Alvaro was born March 15, 1913, in Lyons, the daughter of William and Anna DeVito DeJohn. For the past several years, she has been living in Connecticut to be near her daughter. Louise had been a communicant of St. Michael Church and a member of the August Mauer Post #283 American Legion. While in Newark, she was easily recognized on her long walks in the village. She enjoyed her gardening at her home on Colton Avenue.  Louise had been a painter, painting many homes and apartments throughout Newark. She is survived by her daughter Carole Ann Alvaro and son-in-law Clive Berry of Old Saybrook, Conn., a sister Dorothy Henderson of Sodus, several nieces and nephews . Louise was predeceased by her husband Michael in 1972, siblings Joseph, William, Daniel Sr., and Anthony DeJohn, Rose Bourne, Mary Scoville, Anna Wood, Flora D’Agostino and Frances Chelenza. Smith, David W. - David W. Smith, died Sunday, May 24, 2009 at age 76, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Fulfilling David’s wishes, all funeral services will be private and at the convenience of his family at the South Lyons Cemetery with full military honor. He was proud to have served on the aircraft carriers Essex and Yorktown during the Korean War. He was later declared a disabled veteran due to injuries he suffered while on duty. He returned home and graduated from Alfred State College where he met and married his college sweetheart Cynthia Ames of Syracuse on June 6, 1959. David started his career with H.L. Baughman Construction Co. working on the original highway project “Can of Worms” in Rochester. He later became Assistant Village Engineer for Newark and then retired from the Newark Central School District where he served for over twenty years as Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds retiring July 31, 1987. He was a member of the Park Presbyterian Church, the Newark Masonic Lodge, where he served as master on two separate occasions. He was a member of the Arcadia Memorial Post, VFW. Smith was an avid gardener and was known for his unique moss back yard. He also enjoyed cards, sports, and traveling extensively with his wife both at home and abroad. Besides his loving wife Cynthia, he is also survived by his beloved children, Loren J Irish of Fairport, son and daughter-in-law Zachary D. and Deborah Butticcio Smith of Lyons; granddaughters Mackenzie Irish, Alexis Smith, step grandson and granddaughter-in-law Michael and Rebecca Irish of Huntersville, NC, step grandsons Justin and Devin Tylenda, sister Phyllis E. Larsen, William C. (Chris) - William C. Larsen, 77, of Foster Ave., Clifton Springs, died Tuesday, May 19 at Clifton Springs 
Hospital surrounded by his family. Chris was born July 2, 1931 in Penn Yan, the son of William R. and Frances Seager Larsen. He was the owner of Larsen's Bells Food Market in the Town and Country Plaza, Geneva, where a typical day would be as follows: "Chris Larsen, you have a call on..." 7-3, as customers sort through and squeeze the produce, the store's owner was being paged to supply his speciality, personalized service. "Mr. Larsen, can you grind some round steak for me?" The questions are many and varied, they come at all times of the day, because that's where Larsen was... he was at the store all times of the day. Chris also worked for Loblaws chain at its Penn Yan, Newark, Seneca Falls, and Geneva  stores. He was a past member of the Kiwanian, and board of directors of the Salvation Army and the United Way, and was a past officer in the Bell's retail association and the Penn Yan Moose  Lodge. He was a current member of the Masons. Calling hours will be held Saturday, May 23 from 6-9 p.m. at Weldon Funeral Home, 102 E. Main St.,  Penn Yan. Funeral services for Chris will be on Sunday, May 24 at Milo Center Methodist Church at  2 p.m. A reception will follow services at the Penn Yan Moose Lodge at 3:30 p.m. Private burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Penn Yan. Malach, John D. - John Daniel Malach, 67, of Newark, died on Monday, May 18, 2009, at the Riddle Memorial Hospital 
in Media, PA. Mr. Malach was born February 26, 1942 in Windsor, Canada, the son of John and Viola Karpinski 
Malach. He earned a Bachelors and his Masters Degree in Information Technology from RIT. He had worked at Xerox for over twenty-five years and for the last two and a half years has been a  production manager at Boeing Integrated Defense Systems in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania. John was a 
communicant of both St. Michael’s Church in Newark and St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Essington, Pennsylvania. He served in the US Marine Corps from 1960 to 1968 and is a life member of the Marine Corps League. John was also a member of the August Mauer Post 283, American Legion. Bruni, Francis J. – Francis Junior Bruni, 65, of Fairville, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at Rochester General Hospital. Services were held Friday, May 15 at the Norman L. Waterman Funeral Home, Inc. with Rev. Dan Benedict officiating. Burial is in Newark Cemetery. Mr. Bruni was born the son of the Francis S. and Elizabeth (Borza) Bruni on January 6, 1944 in Upland, CA. He graduated from Geneva High School in 1962. He had a great love of music and enjoyed playing the guitar, keyboard and the harmonica in local bands. Country music and blue grass were his favorite. Mr. Bruni spent several hours on the CB radio and made many friends over the radio waves. He also loved to fish and hunt. Cimineri, Anthony, J. - Anthony J. Cimineri, 52, of Lyons/Clyde died unexpectedly on Sunday, May 17th, 2009 at Geneva General Hospital. Family and friends are invited to call from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20 at the John R. Canolesio Funeral Home, Inc., 38 Ford Street, Clyde. A mass of Christian burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 21 in St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Clyde. Burial with military honors will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. Anthony was born on April 11, 1957 in Lyons, New York to Michael and Ruth Burdick Cimineri. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and a member of St. John’s Church. Tony was well known throughout the area through his membership in the Geneva Baseball Umpires Association. He was and avid golfer and horse racing fan and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Anthony is survived by his children Sarah Jo (Jerome) Camp and Anthony (Shelly) Cimineri; his mother Ruth Cimineri; siblings Michael Cimineri, Rebecca Chappetta, Stephen Cimineri, Donna (Mark) Arnitz and Mary Anne Cimineri; grandchildren Collin, Michelle, Audrianah, Isaiah and Braeden; extended family and many good friends. Tomes, Thomas R. - Thomas Rogers Tomes, 71, of Macedon, died Friday, May 15, 2009 at the Clifton Springs Hospital. Mr. Tomes was born the son of the late Albert and Letta (Bornaiener) Tomes on June 4, 1937 in Clifton Springs, NY. He graduated from Palmyra High School in 1955. As a Test Engineer for Xerox Corp. he retired after 34 years of service. Mr. Tomes was best known throughout Wayne, Ontario and Monroe Counties for his craftsmanship in woodworking. He loved too make all kinds of wood toys and model cars. Known to many people and friends as “Mr. Fix It” for his ability to fix most anything in need of repair. Reeve, Lois J. - Lois J. Reeves, 77, of Penn Yan, passed away Mon. (May 11, 2009) at Geneva General Hospital with her loving daughter by her side.  Lois was born November 17, 1931, in Newark, and was a daughter of the late Arlie and Ethel (Bailey) Gale. She worked for many years as a switchboard operator for Garlock, Inc. in Palmyra and for Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Later, Lois worked at the St. Francis de Sales rectory in Geneva. She was active in the American Legion Auxiliary and was a member of the Geneva Y.M.C.A. In her spare time, Lois enjoyed bowling and golfing. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church in Geneva. A memorial service will be held on Sat., May 16, at 10 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Geneva. David, Lawrence - Lawrence David, 86, of Hartnagle Road, died Thursday, May 7, 2009, at Rochester General Hospital. Mr. David was born on February 9, 1923 in the Town of Henderson, the son of Bino W. and Gladys Mae David David. He was a retired mechanic and had worked for Arcadia Oil for many years. Lawrence was a life member of the Smithville Fire Department and had been a member of the Wayne County Motorcycle Club. He was an avid deer hunter. All services are private and at the convenience of the family. Wagemaker, June - June Wagemaker, 90, Liberty Center, MI, formerly of Rochester/Newark, passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2009, at her home with loving family by her side. Herbst, William H.  - William H. Herbst, 74, of Skaneateles, formerly of the Newark and Lyons area passed away suddenly Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at University Hospital in Syracuse. Bill was born in Lyons on January 27, 1935, a son to William H. and Mary Ann Schleede Herbst. He retired after 36 years from Wegmans Food Market in the Finger Lakes and Rochester region. He was a long time member of the Wayne Hills Country Club, and a life-long Dodger fan. He wintered in Sun City Center, Florida for the past 10 years, and enjoyed summer vacations in the Adirondacks. Newville, Robert, P. - Robert P. Newville, 73, of Sherill died Wednesday morning, April 22, 2009 in the Oneida Healthcare Center, with his family by his side, where he had been a patient for the past ten days. Of Primo Avenue, Mr. Newville was born July 15, 1935 in Clyde, the son of James and Dorothy Brooks Newville. A resident of the area since 2003, moving from New Jersey, he was a graduate of the Palmyra High School and attended computer and engineering college. He married Hazel Roberts on August 30, 1958 in Clyde. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Newville was employed by the Campbell Soup Company in Camden, N.J. as an engineer. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Lyons, a member of the American Legion, Sherrill Post No. 230, and was of the Protestant faith. He loved playing golf and had a love for antique cars. He loved spending time with his wife and family. Mr. Newville was a veteran of the United States Air Force during the Korean War, serving in Okinawa and Japan. Fish, Florence - Florence R. Fish, 59, of Newark, passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at Newark Wayne Community Hospital. Mrs. Fish was born on February 12, 1950, in Williamson, the daughter of Donald and Josephine Slocum Craig. She worked for the Newark School District in the cafeteria. Florence was a member of the Palmyra V.F.W. Post 6778 Women’s Auxiliary and the Palmyra Moose Club. Along with her husband Joe, she served as an Auxiliary Police Officer for the Williamson Police Department. She was a communicant of St. Michael Church in Newark. Wigent, Roy T. ("Little W") - Roy T. Wigent of Alton passed away suddenly on April 21, at age 76. Roy along with his wife Ethel owned and operated the Little W Catering and Smorgasbord. Herman, Erwin I. - Erwin I. (Ernie) Herman, 64, of 1414 Summit Drive, Newark, passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at his home surrounded by his family. He fought a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Herman was born on March 18, 1945, in Newark, the son of Camielle and Viola (Quantz) Herman. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother Girard Herman. He attended Newark Schools and retired last year from Seneca Meadows Landfill in Seneca Falls, where he was a heavy equipment operator. Mr. Herman was an avid car collector and motorcycle enthusiast and a member of the Rat Pack Hot Rod Club. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Carolyn (Smith) Herman, his brother, James Orbaker, and his children, Brian (Wendy Kimball) Herman , of Canastota, N.Y., Lisa (Todd) Schram of Newark, Tracy (Gene ) Zornow, of Newark, Michael (Amy) Herman of Canastota, N.Y. and Steven Herman of Newark. He was the loving grandfather of Sean K. Zornow, Jamie Schram, Jesse Zornow, Kurtis Schram, Tristin Lafler, Seth Zornow, Kaitlyn Herman, Hannah Herman, Abigail Herman, Taylor Herman, several nieces and nephews and many close friends. VanWaes, Richard Duane - Richard Duane VanWaes, 80, of Rt. 88S, died Friday, April 17, 2009 at Newark Wayne Hospital. Dick was born in Manchester, Feb. 17, 1929, son of August and Leona Ververs VanWaes. He was a carpenter in his earlier years and did remodeling and owned a gas station in Newark. He owned and operated the Old World Inn for 5 years. Dick served in the Army in Korea. He was a life member of the American Legion and VFW of Newark. Vermeulen, Charles R. - Charles R. Vermeulen, of Wolcott/Sodus, passed away on Tuesday, April 7, at home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Sodus NY, Charles was the son of the late Abram and Doris (Wahl) Vermeulen. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and a retiree of Eastman Kodak, where he had worked for 31 years. Charles was an avid outdoorsman and woodworker, and did many carvings for family and friends. A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, April 11 beginning at 10 a.m. from the First Reformed Church of Sodus, 18 Maple Avenue. Interment with Military Honors will be held immediately following at the Sodus Rural Cemetery. Utter, Norma L. -  Norma L. Utter, 89, formerly of Route 90, Locke, and 13 Leon Ave., Cortland, passed away Monday, April 6, 2009 at the Groton Nursing Facility. Mrs. Utter was born Dec. 26, 1919 in Elmira, a daughter of the late Rev. George and Grace (Knapp) Parmelee. She had been a resident of Locke from 1944 to 1997, prior to moving to Cortland following her husband Carlton's death. Norma was a graduate of C.C.B.I. in Syracuse, and was employed as a floor matron for the Lansing Girls School for several years, and previously with Smith Corona. She was a member of the Bible Baptist Church of Cortland. Norma was a former member of the New Testament Church of Peruville, where she had served as the congregation's piano player. Lagana, Timothy M. - Timothy M. Lagana, 43, of Phelps/Newark died Sunday, April 5, 2009 as a result of a motor vehicle accident. Tim was born in Geneva, June 22, 1965, son of Sharon Decker. Tom was a member of the Park Presbyterian Church, a councilman for the Town of Arcadia, serving his 2nd term. He graduated from the Boston Museum School of Art. He loved to garden, was a conservationist, and loved to travel  with his family. He was an avid Celtic's fan. Tom was a member of the Cancer Relay for Life Team for 8 years, a photographer, grant writer, and project construction manger of Sheen Housing Authority. Thomas is survived by his wife of 30 years, Barbara (Bilotta);  son Andrew; daughter Robin; brother Robert (Betty) Chappell; sister Susan (David) Walters;  Uncle  Tom (Phyllis) Powers of Iowa, several nieces, nephews, cousins and many loving friends. Predeceased by his parents Winifred and Elmer Chappell. Dunn, Jerold M. - Jerold M. Dunn, 69, of Bear St., Lyons, died Saturday, April 4, 2009 at Newark Wayne Hospital. Jerold was born in Irondequoit, August 23, 1939. Son of Harold and Beatrice Bixby Dunn. He had worked as a security guard and did private work in the Rochester area. He served in the Army 7 years and served in Colorado, Italy & Germany and also lived in Germany. A graveside service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery, Lyons, Rt. 14 N. Westbrook, Ralph F. - Ralph F. Westbrook, of Clearwater, FL, formerly of Newark, NY, died on April 1, 2009 at the age of 83. He was born in Williamsport, PA, son of Harry and Mabel Westbrook. Ralph and his family moved to Newark in 1957. He was active in the local Lions Club and the Football Fathers. He worked as a Metropolitan Life Insurance salesman until his retirement. He retired with his wife to Clearwater, FL in 1986. He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Charlotte. Additional survivors include his five children: John (Marie) Westbrook of Highland Falls, NY; Kathy (Paul) VanCamp of Southbridge, MA; Linda (Steve) Sayre of East Grenbush, NY; James (Margaret) Westbrook of Duluth, GA; and Timothy (Sydney) Westbrook of Vinton, VA. Ralph also leaves behind 15 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, his two brothers, Harry and Dale, a sister, Eileen, and his great-aunt Marguerite. Lester, Mary E. (Beth) - Mary Lester, 84, of Stuart Ave., Newark died Friday, April 3, 2009 at Newark Wayne Hospital. Beth was born in Marion on Oct. 27, 1924, daughter of Henry & Edna Fike Wood. She graduated from Newark High School in 1942 and from Baptist Bible seminary in Johnson City, NY in 1946. Beth was a charter member of 3 churches, the last being a 30 yr. membership at Grace Baptist Church in Marion. She was involved in girl scouts for 38 years. She enjoyed camping, fishing & taking trips with her family. She also loved reading, and sewing. Above all she loved her savior Jesus Christ, her husband and her children. Friends may call Monday 5-8 p.m. at Schultz Pusateri Funeral Home, 103 Maple Ct., Newark. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church, 3040 Walworth Marion Rd., Marion.
