Savannah will open tourism center

The Savannah Chamber of Commerce will open and run a Tourism Information Center this summer.

"This Information Center will be an important tool in assisting our new guests," said John Spellman, Savannah Town Historian.

The Chamber is working with Wayne County Dept. of Aging & Youth and the Employment & Training Office to secure staffing for the Center through the Title V senior Employment Program. This program provides the opportunity for income-eligible adults to work up to 25 hours per week at minimum wage in a temporary situation. Participants must be 55 years of age or over and live in Wayne County.

"The Senior Employment Program provides valuable training, work experience and employment counseling for persons over the age of 55," said Jim West of the Department of Aging and Youth. "Putting workers into community projects like the Savannah Chamber's Tourism Information Center is a win-win situation for everyone involved and we are pleased to be assisting in this project."

Tourism activity in the Savannah area has been on the increase as visitors come to enjoy the rich and diverse wildlife found in Montezuma Wetlands Complex. A mixture of marshlands, wetlands, farm lands, grasslands, small wood lots and rural communities, the Complex is a significant migratory bird resting, feeding and staging area in the Atlantic Flyway. Annually, more that 1,000,000 waterfowl pass through the complex, as well as shorebirds and songbirds.

The Wayne County Office of Tourism will assist the Savannah Chamber in training Information Center staff and keeping the center stocked with brochures. "Hospitality and tourism information are key elements in attracting visitors and having them extend their stay in the area," stated Marjory Allen Perez, Director of the County Office of Tourism.

Anyone interested in employment opportunities at the Savannah Tourism Information Center should call the Wayne County Employment and Training Office at (315) 946-5891.
