Newark Chamber meets
By John Zornow

The Board of Directors of the Greater Newark Chamber of Commerce held a luncheon meeting yesterday. Invited guests were Deb Hellert of the Red Cross, and Jon Blumenthal of the Newark Raptors.

Deb Hellert of the Red Cross spoke about a summer campaign to promote blood donor awareness and to increase summer blood collections. Hellert explained that summer blood collections suffer because of a school and college closings and business and industry vacation schedules. And, blood and blood products are in increased demand during the summer months because of more accidents and increases in elective surgery.

A mid-June kick-off breakfast will take place to promote "Communities That Care" to increase blood collections by 15 percent. Newark's summer blood drive goal is 150 units of blood per drive. It is hoped that this ambitious goal will be possible through extended hours and greater awareness of the need. Hellert said that 150 units of blood can help 450 people, and Newark's potential donor base is 300 units. Those who have questions about donor eligibility can call 1-800-272-4543, anytime.

The Newark Raptors are in their second season and have a great schedule planned. Planned are three nights of fireworks, four give-away nights, and an All-Star game to be broadcast by the Empire Sports Network. Blumenthal also said that the Raptors are looking for host families and part-time employment opportunities for the players.

Chamber Board member Mike Tonovitz reported on the Interpretive Center that is to be located at T. Spencer Knight Park. He explained that government red tape has slowed the project, and construction will not start until October. This will delay opening until 2000. Tonovitz said that staffing of the Interpretive center will be handled by volunteers from around Wayne County.

Chamber President Tracy Pieters announced that the Greater Newark Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament will be held on September 13.
