Sodus Bay Historical Society will host a wooden boat building demonstration by members of the Rochester Wood Workers Society, Inc., on August 8 at the Sodus Point Light House Museum, 7606 Ontario St., Sodus Point, Wayne County. The display and demonstration of this traditional craft begins at 2 p.m. on the lawn of the Old Sodus Point Light House.

A free outdoor Sunday concert, featuring the Savannah Cellarsavers, starts at 3 p.m.

Since 1996, the boat builders, who comprise a special-interest group among the Wood Workers Society, have been planning, designing and building a 14-ft. Whitehall pulling boat. Plans for the project were obtained from the Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, Connecticut.

"The lines were taken off in the 1970's from a near-derelict boat," said Ray Feasy, who learned the fundamentals of wooden boat building at the Wooden Boat School in Brooklin, Maine.

"It was important to retain the design, since this particular boat is historically important to the Mystic Seaport Museum. Most of us probably would have relegated the hulk to a Viking burial or used it to display out prize geraniums."

The Whitehall, which currently consists of only a hull, will also be on exhibit.
