old
fire truck

By John Zornow

Richard Colacino, owner of Newark Electric Corp. on Harrison Street, Newark, collects fire trucks. Many of his trucks are on display in his office, but two of the trucks won't fit in the building. The two trucks are former Newark Fire Department vehicles which Colacino has purchased.

His latest acquisition is "T-2," a 1954 Seagrave Hook and Ladder Truck that served Newark from 1954 until 1980, when a new ladder truck was purchased. T-2 was then sold to the Village of Wolcott.

Colacino recently purchased the truck from Wolcott, where the vehicle had been stored outdoors for several years.

A sanding party was held a Colacino's residence on Sycamore Trail last Sunday, to prepare the vehicle for a bright red paint job. After the sanding was complete, Colacino treated the workers, many of which are fellow volunteer firemen, to a meal.

The 1954 Seagrave Ladder truck was delivered April 8, 1954 during the Mayorship of T.R. Beales and under Fire Chief Harold Atwood. This followed a referendum that was approved by village residents in the amount of $32,000. The 1954 truck replaced an old ladder truck that had been in service for 32 years. The truck was built in Columbus Ohio and features a 12-cylinder Pierce-Arrow designed engine. The 13-ton vehicle has a pump capable of 750 gallons per minute.
