Great Sodus Bay Association seeks members

The Great Sodus Bay Association is still looking for members from Sodus, Alton, Wallington, Wolcott, and Huron towns and villages. The association will promote the Sodus Bay area at its August 10 meeting at Katlynn Marine at 7 p.m. The public is welcome.

At the group's July 20 meeting a guest speaker from the Seaway Trail Inc., presented a plan of action the association could take to promote the Sodus Bay area as a year-round tourist attraction.

The public relations committee reported a recommendation to reserve the domain names of greatsodusbay.org and greatsodusbay.com for the association web site. Members developed its mission statement to become known as the four-season capitol of Wayne County; and to promote tourism in and around the Sodus Bay area throughout the year; and to enhance the overall economy of the area. The association adopted "Great Sodus Bay, the crown jewel of Lake Ontario" as their slogan.

The sign committee reported that they have written a letter of request to the New York State Department of Transportation on behalf of the Great Sodus Bay Association for approval of signage identifying the Sodus Bay Resort area. The request is for access along state Route 104 for the specific purpose of installing a 4' x 6' two-sided sign, elevated at 8' to identify Sodus Bay. The signs are to be placed at Route 104 & 414, Route 104 & 14, and Route 104 & Maple Avenue.

Members formed a committee to nominate an Executive Board, to exist of six business members, one member-at-large, plus four non-voting directors. The at-large member will represent not-for-profit organizations. All dues-paying members of the Great Sodus Bay Association are invited and requested to attend the August 10 meeting to vote on the proposed slate of officers and the association's executive board.

Marge Perez of Wayne County Office of Tourism will be speaking at the August meeting to present a Holiday Tourism Promotion Campaign specifically for the Great Sodus Bay Association.

The finance committee has $2,200 in pledges and $6,500 collected from the Sodus Bay area merchants to be put toward the Association's commitment to promote tourism on the bay. Those interested in becoming a member, can call Dave Williamson at 483.6700.
