Newark Police have arrested Donald R. Greenwald Jr. for the stabbing murder of his stepmother, 83-year-old Josephine Greenwald.

Police Chief Richard Bogan said Greenwald Jr., 40, was charged Wednesday with second-degree murder and first-degree burglary. He is being held in Wayne County Jail without bail.

Bogan said that Josephine and Donald Greenwald Sr. had had not seen nor spoken to Greenwald Jr. since the 1970s.

"Neither had contact with Mr. Greenwald (Jr.) for over 20 years," he said.

In 1980, Greenwald Jr. was convicted on several counts of first-degree rape and sodomy, and served 16 years in prison. He was released from Great Meadow Correctional Facility in June 1996, according to the State Department of Corrections.

Police officials said that Donald Greewald Jr. recently worked at Key Industries in Newark.  "I've been instructed by the investigating authorities not to make any comment whatsoever," said Thomas Gramley, executive director for Key Industries.

Greenwald had been living at 91 Broad St. in Lyons, with his sister.
