Apple Tasting Tour begins soon

The Annual 'A TASTE OF WAYNE COUNTY apple tasting tour starts Sept. 18. The Wayne County Farm Market Committee has organized an expanded Apple Tasting Tour for this fall.

'Last year's one-weekend event was so successful that we decided to hold a month-long celebration of the apple this year,' stated Ora Rothfuss, County Planning Department's Agricultural Development Specialist and Committee member. 'Each weekend from September 18 through October 10, there will be apple tasting at participating farm markets, farms and wineries,' Rothfuss reported.

The apple is a premiere crop in Wayne County, with the county ranking first in apple production in New York State and second in the nation. Statistics from the 1997 agricultural census indicate that 240 farms in Wayne County grow apples on 20,000 acres of land. There are 2.1 million apple trees in the county and over 15 varieties of apples are grown here.

'The apple tasting tour gives residents and visitors an opportunity to experience the flavor of a wide variety of apples, which are grown right on the farms in the county,' stated Alan Smith, owner of Orchard View Farm Market, located on Ridge Road in North Rose. 'By holding the tour on four weekends, we get a chance to showcase a wider selection of apples and it gives the visitor more chances to come out to our farms,' Smith added.

Each weekend will feature different sites for tastings.

Sept. 18 and 19 - Maier's Mud Acres Farm Market, 1040 Canandaigua Rd., Macedon and Long Acre Farm Market, 1342 Eddy Rd., Macedon.

Sept. 25 and 26 - Morgan Farm Market, 3843 Cory Comers Rd., Marion; Orbaker's Farm Market, 3451 W. Lake Rd., Williamson; and DeLyser's Farm Market, Rt. 104, Williamson.

Oct. 2 and 3 - Burnap's Farm Market, Lake Rd. & Maple Ave., Sodus; Alasa Farms, 6450 Shaker Rd., Alton; Thorpe Vineyards, 8150 Chimney Hgts. Blvd., Wolcott; and Orchard View Farm Market, 10006 Ridge Rd-, No. Rose.

Oct. 9 - Pine Hill Orchards Farm Market, 2745 Rt. 14N, Lyons.

Oct. 9 and 10 - Crusoe Island Natural Foods, Rt. 89S, Savannah; The Apple Shed, 3391 Maple Ridge Rd., Newark.
