Reunion of Pioneer Jagger Family

Descendants of the Pioneer Jagger Family held a reunion in July, at the home of Glenn Young on Hydesville Road, in the Town of Palmyra. The oldest person attending was Leah Young, 97, of East Palmyra. The youngest was Nathan Young of Fairport, who is two years old.

Coming from as far away as Boston, a car caravan was planned to visit pioneer sites which included the Pioneer Burying Ground at Hazen Lane on Hydesville Road, Palmyra; the Hopkins Burying Ground at #7 Cobblestone Schoolhouse in East Palmyra ; several early sites on Jagger Road, Palmyra the location of the original log and frame houses, several outbuildings and the Jagger Pioneer Burying Ground.

Jaggers were part of a group of early settlers from Southampton, Long Island who traveled by boat; up the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers, to Wayne County. After a journey of 28 days, they arrived at Sawmill Brook, Palmyra, the tributary of the Ganargua River, also called Mud Creek. They purchased 5500 acres in the Northeast section of Palmyra and were known as the Long Island Settlement.

The present group welcomes hearing from persons with Jagger connections. Tom Jagger of Sodus will host the next reunion in 2000. Contact persons are Ellen Rich of Marion or Bob Jagger of Palmyra.
