Y2K County budget at $88.8 million

A look at local town rates

Last week, the Wayne County Board of Supervisors adopted next year's spending plan. The $88.8 million budget will increase taxes to just about what they were in 1998. For the coming year, the county has to raise nearly $27 million from local taxpayers. (Click here to view budget figures.)

The average tax rate will be $7.94 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, but that rate is different in each of the County's 15 towns, depending on state equalization rates.

For instance, the 1999 rate in Arcadia (outside the village) was $7.54. In 2000, it will be $7.96 - up 42 cents.

In neighboring Lyons, taxpayers saw a dip of almost a dollar in their 1999 rates, but in Y2K, they'll be paying $8.25 per thousand. Marion's rate for next year will be $7.78, up from $7.50.

In Palmyra, they're going from $7.31 to $7.66 and, although that's up a bit, it's still below their 1998 rate of $8.08.

Rates will go down for taxpayers in Galen, Huron, Rose

The lowest county rate will be paid by property owners in Rose ($7.10). In 1999, that distinction was held by Town of Butler residents.

And the highest rate? That will be paid by Lyons residents who live inside the village - $8.67 per $1,000. Huron residents paid the highest 1999 county rate at $8.29
