New Year's Gatherings

The practice of visiting friend continued until the first years of this century. It was a gala time when everyone held open house and laid out enormous feasts for anyone who should drop in, whether friend or stranger. To neglect this annual visit was a terrible slight, and the roads were thronged with carriages bearing the holiday makers. The American antiquarian William Walsh reports: "Special houses were noted for particular forms of entertainment. At one it was egg nog; at another rum punch; at this one, pickled oysters; at that, boned turkey or marvelous chocolate; or perfect Mocha coffee, or for the select, a drop of old Madeira as delicate in flavor as the texture of the glass from which it was sipped. At all houses there were the New Year's cake, in the form of an Egyptian cartouch, and in later and more degenerated days, relays of champagne bottles appeared."
