Newark firefighters honored
By John Zornow

comella.jpg (10436 bytes)The Newark Fire Department Annual Banquet was held at the Elks Lodge Saturday night.

The banquet started with a memorial service to honor two people who passed away in 1998: James Nittolo, a member of Arcadia Hose Co., and Ladies Auxilian Hazel Dobbelaere were honored with a tribute by Norman Waterman.

Richard Laitenberger of Union Hill, honored guest and emcee for the evening, introduced and recognized all guests.

George Comella stood to be recognized for his 50 years of service to the Department. (Pictured to his right is Lindy Pulver, who has 50-plus years. If you see Lindy on Thursday, Feb. 4, wish him a happy 79th birthday!)

Earl Fagner presented 25- and 50-year membership awards. (Pictured at top of story are Bernie Henson, Ron Ahrans and Frank Russell, Jr. receiving their 25-year pins from Earl.)

Saturday night, those honored for their many hours of training included Paul Chetney.

The evening reminded everyone of the long history of firefighting in Newark and Arcadia. Records show that as early as 1835, a fire company manned town-owned, hand-drawn fire equipment. Engine Company #1 (Deluge Hose Co.) and Arcadia Fire Co. #2 were both formed in 1859, soon after the 1853 incorporation of the Village of Newark.

Also pictured are Ken Graf and Dan Henson.

The "coveted" Red Heart Awards are given to those in the department involved in a humorous (and usually embarrassing) incident while in the line of duty. This year, the Red Hearts went to Jeff Miller, Miguel Quinones, and Scott Stell.

A buffet dinner was enjoyed by all; music and dancing following the banquet.
