Reds beat Victor in two overtimes

The Newark varsity boys basketball team retained a share of the Finger Lakes East title with a thrilling 71-70 double overtime win over the Victor Blue Devils.

Joe ContarioOn their home court Tuesday night, Newark stumbled at first and trailed Victor 8-0. Victor led 20-11 after one quarter of play. A Jamie McArdle layup extended the Blue Devil lead to 24-11 in the second period.

Jason Sloane made a dunk and the score was 29-26; his free throw would cut the lead to 29-27. Newark trailed 31-27 at halftime. Sloane had eight points in the first half with Rich Fernandez adding seven points.

After trailing most of the third period the Reds finally tied the game at 40-all when Luke Baker converted on one of two free throws.

Newark finally took a 45-44 lead in the third period, thanks to a Brent Burgess bucket. Newark led 47-44 after three periods of play. Newark extended the lead in the fourth quarter to five points at 49-44 after two free throws by Josh Herman.

It was a six-point lead with 2:09 remaining as Fernandez converted on a steal. Two free throws by Jason Geyer at 1:03 tied the game at 57-57 all. Newark had the ball at the end of regulation with 28.9 seconds but could not convert on their possession.

In the first overtime period, the Reds led 61-57 at the 2:02 mark on Fernandez's two free throws but, once again, could not hold off the Blue Devils as Jamie McArdle tied the game at 61 all. A desperation shot by Dan Buck at the buzzer was no good.

In the second overtime period, a Jason Geyer three-pointer from nearly halfcourt, at the buzzer, gave Victor a 64-63 lead. Two free-throws by Sloane for Newark and a lay-up gave the Reds a 67-64 lead. Victor cut the lead to 68-67 when McArdle converted on one of two free throws. A bucket by McArdle gave the Blue Devils the lead at 70-69.

Newark's last chance at the game winner came when Herman tipped in the ball as time ran out for the Reds victory.

Herman had 13 points and eight rebounds; Sloane had 17 points with ten of those in the second period. Fernandez added 13 points, Shawn Oakleaf had 12 points and nine rebounds.

McArdle had 22 points for the Blue Devils. Newark was 20 of 27 from the foul line. Newark is now 17-2 overall on the year and 15-2 in the Finger Lakes East.

Newark's regular season finale is tonight at Penn Yan at 7:30 p.m.

Newark finished the season as the number one seed in Class BB.
