Newark boys are 6-2 overall

Newark boysThe Newark High School basketball team improved to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the Finger Lakes East with a 61-49 win over the Mynderse Academy Blue Devils Tuesday at home.

Newark started out strong early in the game as they went on a 9-2 run and led 16-9 after the first period. In the second quarter Mynderse cut the lead down a little as the Reds led 32-25 at half time. Rich Fernandez and Dan Buck each had eight points a piece in the first half.

Newark maintained the lead in the third taking a 42 to 35 lead going into the final period.

In the fourth Mynderse cut the lead to 42-38 Justin Whyte hit back-to-back jumpers to extend the lead to 46-40. The Blue Devils came right back on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 46-45 with five minutes left in the game. The Reds then went on a 15-4 run to finish the game.

Newark was 12 of 13 from the foul line including nine of ten in the fourth quarter.

Rich Fernandez led the Reds with 16 points followed by Dan Buck and Josh Herman with 11 each. Justin Whyte and Shawn Oakleaf each had eight points a piece with Oakleaf adding nine rebounds.

Newark was to travel to Marcus Whitman last night for a 7:30 p.m. game.
