Program on Wayne County POW Camps

Annette Harris of Sodus will be the speaker at the regular monthly meeting of the Colonel William Prescott Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution on January 20. She will be speaking on "The World War II Prisoner of War Camps in Wayne County".

Born in Penn Yan and a graduate of Penn Yan Academy, Harris studied at Butler University, and was graduated from Ithaca College with a B.S. degree. She has had an interest in history and in historical events for many years. She is the author of a local history book, "Small Beginnings--The Story of Newark, New York," a three-part article on General Anthony Wayne which was published in the Drumlins magazine, and currently has two works in progress: a biography of Anthony Wayne and a book on the World War II prisoner of war camps in Wayne County.

Mrs. Harris was employed by the Newark Central School District until her retirement in 1990 and is the organist at Grace Episcopal Church, Lyons. She serves on the boards of The Arcadia Historical Society and the Lyons Heritage Society. She is a member of the Wayne County Historical Society, Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association, Syracuse Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, the Organ Historical Society and serves on several Episcopal Diocese of Rochester committees.

Married to John W. Harris, she has three sons and two daughters, all of whom were graduated from the Newark Central School, and she has eight grandchildren. She is an avid reader, enjoys many types of music, enjoys sailing, windsurfing, skiing and traveling. She and her husband have traveled extensively in the U.S., Canada, England, Ireland, Wales and the Netherlands.

When asked how she became so interested in history she replied, "Walking where the Romans once traveled, visiting castles commissioned by ancient kings, hiking across areas where great battles took place and worshipping in cathedrals and churches which took decades to build - these are humbling experiences which give one a sense of our history which, in turn, encourages and deepens my interest in the past."

The public is invited to this program on county history at 1 p.m. at the Chapter house, 119 High Street, Newark. Members will convene for the noon luncheon for which hostesses are: Chairman Madelyn Jagger of Palmyra, Nina Johnson of North Rose and Mary Rindfleisch of Clyde.
