| Wayne County began it's Martin Luther King Day celebration with a noon
march from the County Courthouse to the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. About 20
gathered to make the walk down William Street, Canal, around to Lawrence and on to the
church at Spencer and Holly Streets.
The featured speaker was Brother Earl Greene of the Church of Christ in Newark. After
being raised in Rochester, and living for 10 years in Boston, Greene returned to
Rochester. He has an extensive ministry in Wayne County, a jail ministry in Ontario
County, and he is a counselor for FLACRA. He works with recovering addicts, youths in
trouble, and he has experience with youth gangs. He served on the Boston District
Attorney's Task Force on Youth Gangs. He and his wife and children now reside in Lyons.
Janice Comer was Mistress of Ceremonies. Others who took part in the service were the
Rev. Frank Comer, Attorney Michael Cobbs, Connie Range, the Rev. King Lewis, and Brother
Hartfield, and the essay winners.
Musical selections were presented by the Mt. Zion Youth Choir, and Michael Kemp and the
Risen Nation Choir.
The celebration is sponsored by Wayne Action for Racial Equality, Martin Luther King
Commission, and the NAACP.
