Arcadia Museum open Saturdays

The Arcadia Museum, operated by the Arcadia Historical Society, will be open from 1 until 3 p.m. on Saturdays, beginning July 10, and continuing through at least October.

The museum is located at 120 High St., at the corner of Mason Street (across the street from the Newark Public Library and Hoffman Clock Museum). The museum will also be open by appointment for groups, families and individuals at other times. Please phone 331.4078 for information.

The first exhibit includes items from the Jackson & Perkins Co. and their world-famous rose gardens. The first garden was established in 1939. Newark was known as The Rose Capital of America for many years. Jackson & Perkins, still in business, was founded in Newark in 1873, continuing here until 1969, before moving entirely to Medford, Oregon.

Exhibits on display include six quilts and coverlets with Arcadia provenance. Also, a comprehensive display of Newark's milk bottles, some dating back to as early as 1890, are on view. The marble plaque from the inside of Newark City Hall, and an early oak Bloomer Bros. print tray stand can be seen. Admission is free, but donations are gratefully accepted. The gift shop is also open, with Arcadia coverlets, post cards, Washington School prints drawn by local artist Owen Hughes, and more, on sale.

The building was formerly the Church of Christ, Scientist and Christian Science Reading Room, built in 1952. The AHS acquired the building in May 1997, with the mortgage being paid off in June 1998.
