Raptors make the playoffs

For the second year, the Newark Raptors will be in the NCBL playoffs against the rival Geneva Knights.

Newark clinched a spot on Monday by defeating the Wellsville Nitros 5-1 at Colburn Park.

Randy Erwin pitched 7 and 1/3 strong innings, giving up only five hits, to avenge his only loss of the season against James Kirkland and the Nitros on July 9. The Raptors scored three runs to put the game away.

Phil Warren's sacrifice fly put Newark up 1-0 in the fourth inning. An inning later, Brad Hassey's RBI single gave the Raptors a 2-0 lead.

The Nitros cut the deficit in half on a Foy Shemwell RBI single in the eighth, but a two-out, two-run double by Jeff Willis in the bottom of the inning was all the insurance the Raptors needed. Billy Sabinson followed with an RBI single, scoring the game's final run.

Hassey had two of the Raptor's nine hits.

Heath Luther and Shemwell each had two hits, and Luther stole two bases.

Geneva and Newark have clinched the top two spots in the West division, but the order of the two is not set. The best-of-three divisional playoffs start on July 27.
