'There are some huge bass in the canal,' said Carolyn Suwyn, owner of Ike's. 'If you want to catch the five warm water species in this derby, the Erie Canal is where you'll want to fish.' The Merchants Challenge species are northern pike, walleye, perch, small and largemouth bass. All these fish can be 'hooked' in the canal. Five and six pound large mouths are not uncommon catches. Walleyes have been hitting near the Palmyra area. The other species can be caught anywhere on the waterway. The derby continues through September 6. 'All ten species in both divisions are being caught. Its possible to fish the derby the last week and win some cash. We also have two more drawings for Northern King packages. Each drawing consists of a $50 assortment of spoons. We pick five names each time. To be eligible all you have to do is to enter the derby.'
