Weekend of the Endangered Savannah "Weekend of the Endangered" is June 4-5-6. Friday night's free activities start with a look back at time with a (40-minute) 4 p.m. bus tour of the historical areas of the town. At 5 p.m. refreshments will be served. Indian history and Moments in Time presentation will be hosted by Dr. Sweeting (John Spellman, Savannah historian) inventor of the Flag Salt Remedy. Recognition of Savannah's oldest seniors will start at 5:45 p.m. Everyone attending will enjoy the Barbershop songs of the Auburn Lakelanders. Finale will be Visions of Savannah-Year 2000. Historical displays and Ancestral Tree building will be available throughout the evening. Saturday will feature the 10 a.m. parade. Floats representing Endangered Species or the Environment will continue as they have in the last three years to amaze and bring to our attention the beauty of our wildlife and the importance of our respect for the environment. Each year, four $250 float prizes are given by Savannah Bank and Wal-Mart toward the recognition and accomplishments of the float creators. Individuals, schools, churches and organizations compete in building these beautiful masterpieces. In addition to the floats, parents are encouraged to dress their children up and enter them in competition for the eight walking participants $20 awards. The parade organizers welcome scouts, bands, fire departments, any others to join in the festivities. Trophies are awarded. After the parade, join the many events on Main Street. Board your family on the bus to Crusoe Lake Nature Center. Bill Gillette is your tour guide through his 1-mile nature trail that leads to the secrets of Crusoe Lake. The only access to this small lake nestled in Savannah is through Gillette's property. Try your skills at bird, tree and plant identification that is harbored at this nature center. Another bus will transport you to Howland's Island at the Savannah Entrance. Ducks Unlimited awaits your participation in the Labrador Retriever Field Trial demo's at the ponds. Listen to the Island sounds of Turkey, Geese and Ducks, as the calling demo's continue until 4:30. Events continue Sunday, starting with the 9 a.m. 5k and 10k Runners Race. This year, both courses have been measured and certified by NYSE Track and Field Association to accommodate runners looking for points in running. Bus transportation continues to bring you back to nature. D.E.C. & US Fish & Wildlife take you in their own canoes down quiet Crusoe Creek as they introduce you to the restoration of habitat in Savannah. After the ride, visit the Morgan Road Wetlands Complex DEC Headquarters. The bus will pick you up later. The anxiously awaited bus to Savannah Evergreen also starts at 11 a.m. This exclusive tour takes you to the 2000 acre Wildlife Preserve located between Savannah and Clyde. Bucky Lainhart, manager of the preserve and your tour guide, will give a presentation about the facility as you enjoy the sites.
