AIDS task force plans Lyons program

The Wayne County Task Force on AIDS has announced a new summer program, Lyons Initiative for Empowerment ( or LIFE), for youth ages 8 to 13.

It will be held in cooperation with the Lyons Community Center Summer Program from July 6 through August 12, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The program is open to all youth in the area. There is no fee for the program, and funding for the program is provided through a grant from the United Way of Wayne County.

Enrolled youth will participate in games, activities, team-building exercises, and role plays that will teach and model effective decision-making skills, build self-esteem, and provide positive incentives for healthy choices. The primary goals are to prevent risk-taking behavior before it starts and to provide the skills necessary for healthy behavior change across a wide range of activities.

Youth participants will also gain the necessary knowledge to make informed healthy choices about the risk of pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV, and chemical dependency.

The Lyons Community Center program coordinators are Deb Hellert, Wayne County Chapter American Red Cross 331-3783; Lisa Roth, Wayne County Public Health at 331-5749; Kerry Taft, Council on Alcoholism at 946-5091.
