Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

This week was definitely a change from the heat and humidity. We all needed a break - us and our flowers. I constantly watered them and they still looked so thirsty.

racoonsThis year, I'm making an attempt at a vegetable garden. It seems to be taking me forever. Most likely I'll have quarter-size pumpkins and really tiny corn. We'll see what happens. Timing seems to be everything.

Today was Fair Day at the Sodus School so if your child came home with a large smile and blue hair, I hope you weren't too surprised. (I always told my kids to warn me about what their hair plans were going to be.)

The Hooper Family is Florida-bound and hope to be in their new home on Father's Day. What a nice gift. Brian and Eileen's mother are well on the road to recovery. I spoke to Brian the other day and told him not to sing too much for a while. Opera would really be tough, but I'm sure Brian isn't in to that anyway. Good luck to them, I will keep you posted on how they're doing. Especially on those cold, blustery days when it's nice to hear stories about what people are doing in the warmer parts of the world.

Don't forget to sign up for the Summer Reading programs at the libraries. Williamson's registration will be on Monday, June 21. Sounds like there will be a lot of Party Animals at this library. There will be a pretty flowersParty Place Store. (Children will read for scrip to spend at the store.)

The Williamson library has gotten in many CD-roms with titles such as: Dinosaur Hunter, The Way Things Work, The Land Before Time Activity Center, Big Thinker, Jack's Attic, Science Blaster Jr. and many more.

The Sodus Library has some new picture books that include:

Munschworks The First Munsch collection by Robert Munsch

The Cat Barked by Lydia Monks

King Midas by John Stewig

The Ugly Duckling by Jerry Pinkney

Swine Lake by James Marshall

Pssst, It's Me the Boogeyman by Barbara Park

Trucks, Trucks, Trucks by Peter Sis and

Raising Sweetness by Diane Stanley

swimming poolWith summer vacation coming, it'll be a great time to visit the library and check out all the new things they have to offer.

Are you ready for summer vacation? (When the kids were younger it was much easier to keep them occupied. Now, it's more of a challenge.) Reading during the summer is a great way to keep your child's mind sharp for when school begins again in the fall. Word search books are fun and activity books from the store are challenging, as well.

Going to the park is always a big hit and there are many of them in Wayne County to go to: Norsen Park, Ontario Beach Park, B.Foreman Park and the beach are good ways to spend time together, too.

Do you have any fun ideas you'd like to share to keep kids happy during the summer? (The website has a Kids Corner you could check out too. If you don't have a computer, remember the libraries do, and welcome you to come use them.)

Write to me at mgoodcooke@aol.com with your ideas.

Enjoy your week and have fun with your kids.

(Note to Melissa: Let me know if you get the kids out of the new pool long enough to go to the library.)
