Newark Reds go south The Varsity Reds dropped to 1-9 with a 12-4 loss to the Fairport Red Raiders at Socastee High School in South Carolina on April 22.
Fairport led 7-0 after five innings of play with one in the first, one in the fourth and two more in the fifth frame. Newark scored four times in the fifth inning when Jason Sloane walked and scored on a wild pitch. Travis Bean doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch. Pete Simizon then had a RBI single. Josh Herman (pictured) finished the scoring for the Reds with a two run home run. Sloane was 2 for 3 with a single and a double. Bean was one for three. Simizon was 1 for 3 with a run batted in. Herman was 2 for 4 at the plate. Newark had seven hits on the night. In action on April 21, Utica Proctor defeated Newark 10-2 at in the second game of a twin bill. The winners tallied seven runs in the second frame with two more in the fifth and one
more in the sixth.
In the first game, Newark lost to Fairport 9-2. The Red Raiders scored twice in the second and added six in the fourth and one more in the fifth. Newark scored its first run in the fourth when Bean homered. Newark added one more in the sixth when Adam Ross singled and scored on a wild pitch. Newark had just three hits in the game. Fairport had eight hits. Nate Pensgen and Greg Soja combined on a three hitter for Fairport. Steve Esposito was
2 for 2 at the plate with two runs scored. John Ellis had a two-run double in the fourth
for the 5-1 Red Raiders.
On April 20, Newark lost to Utica Proctor 13-3. The winners exploded for seven runs in the sixth enroute to the win. Proctor had seven hits in the game. Newark tallied one run in the second when Jeff Bray was hit by a pitch and scored on a RBI single by Mike Zappia. In the third, Newark added two runs, when Ross singled and scored. Pete Simizon singled and scored on a rbi double by Josh Herman. Ross went 2 for 2; Newark had seven hits. The game was played at Georgetown High School in South Carolina.
BACK AT HOME: The Newark Reds Varsity boys baseball team picked up their second win of the year with a 5-2 victory over the Marcus Whitman Wildcats at Frontier Field on Monday. Newark senior Jason Sloane fired a one hitter while striking out 13 batters in the contest. Senior Josh Herman was 2 for 3 at the plate. Newark's first run came in the first when Travis Bean got on a error stole second and scored on a rbi single by Josh Herman. Newark added three more runs in the fourth when Peter Simizon singled and scored on a pass ball. Herman then singled and advanced to second on a pass ball . He would eventually score on a error. Ben Converse then singled and scored on a rbi single by Mike Zappia. In the fifth frame Peter Simizon walked and scored on a rbi single by Jeff Bray. Newark had seven hits in the game. Whitman scored all of their runs in the sixth frame. Tuesday, the Varsity team dropped a twin bill to the Dansville Mustangs at Frontier Field on April 27. Newark 2-11 on the season dropped their first of two by the score of 6-1. Newark's lone run came in the top of the sixth when Josh Herman hit a rbi bloop single scoring Adam Ross. Newark trialed 6-0 going into the frame. Ed Miranda took the loss on the mound. In the second game Newark dropped a 8-6 decision to the Mustangs. Newark tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first when Jason Sloane walked and scored on a fielders choice. Newark took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second when Ben Converse and Mike Zappia both walked. Eric Spratley drilled a two rbi triple scoring Converse and Zappia. Spratley then scored on a pass ball making it 4-1. Newark made it 5-1 in the fourth when Jason Sloane sacrificed Mike Zappia who got on a error earlier in the game making it 5-1. Dansville scored five unanswered runs in the top of the fith to take the lead for good in the game. Dansville added a run in the sixth making it 7-5. Newark added its final run in the sixth when Ed Miranda singled and scored on a error. The Mustangs added their final run of the night in the top of the seventh. Copyright © 1999 |
