Newark hires PR rep
By John Zornow

Referring to a "lack of coverage" by "the media," Newark Mayor Fred Pirelli made his case for hiring a public relations official last night.

Pirelli pointed out an article in the Democrat and Chronicle which described canal corridor projects in Wayne County, but did not mention Newark. "A lot of positive things are happening in Newark, and nobody knows about it," claimed Pirelli.

The Mayor then presented the name of Karin Benjamin of Landon Ave., Newark as his proposed Public Relations Official. Trustee Kurt Werts cautioned that the duties of this person must be clear cut, and not censorship. After some discussion, the board voted to establish the position at an annual salary of $1500.

Village $mart Review negotiating teams were set up that will work out details with the Town of Arcadia, relative to recomendations by the NY State Comptroller's office. The recommendations were made following a $mart Review audit of our local government operations. The teams being established are for consolidation of the village and town justice offices and village and town highway departments.

Additional Police Officer Hired -

Police Chief Richard Bogan was authorized to hire Matthew Neilson, currently of Yates County, as a Newark Police Officer. Bogan indicated this hire was due the receipt of a C.O.P.S. grant. Neilson has been associated with the Newark Police Department as a student intern, and helped form the Newark PAC-TAC. Chief Bogan indicated that Neilson will be moving to Wayne County.

Central Park fountain -

Much discussion was held about the fountain in Central Park. Trustee Peter Blandino proposed that the parks department possibly fill it in and plant flowers. As a result of the discussion, it was agreed that the Central Park fountain be repaired and in operation right after Newarkfest. Also, the fountain in Elliot Park on East Union St. will be looked at, with the idea that it should be an operating fountain again.

Insurance rates up -

Village Clerk John Trickey spoke to the board about a proposed increase in health insurance rates by Blue Cross. Trickey indicated that rate could increase by as much as 10%, as they did in 1998, and that the increases were being driven by drug costs, specifically the 'glamour' drug costs.

In other village business:

  • Permission was granted to hold the 29th annual Kiddie Day parade on June 5, 1999.
  • The Board approved a subdivision waiver for the additional Blue Cut Housing development.
  • Bob Howard was hired as substitute school crossing guard.

The next village board meeting will be a shareholders meeting at the Newark High School on June 1. The meeting on June 15, will only be a short business meeting.
