Newark students collect one million!

The task began in April 1987. That's when Sue Stock's fourth graders at Norman R. Kelley School, Newark, set a goal to collect one million somethings. Two current fourth graders tell the story:

A Million Stamps
By Jamie LaManna & Casey Trumble

Have you heard of the Newark fourth grade class and the million stamps? Fourth grade classes in Room 126 at Kelley School have been collecting stamps since 1987. Mrs. Stock's class of 1987 thought about collecting pennies, bottle tops, or stamps. They chose stamps because they seemed easiest to get.

We now have a million stamps and are going to give them to the Kodak Stamp Club. When Mrs. Stock's room started collecting stamps, some of her classes thought one million stamps would fit in a fish tank. That's why the project was started - to see what a million looked like.

Besides counting stamps, our class found stamps from all the continents except Antarctica. We also found postmarks from most of the states and many places in New York, our state. If they weren't on our map, we got on the Internet to locate them.

We got the idea of giving the stamps to the Kodak Stamp Club from an old Kodak newsletter. Then we read Click, a biography about George Eastman. We were surprised at how George Eastman came up with the name Kodak.

Many letters have been sent to people contributing stamps. We would like to thank everyone who has helped with this project over the last twelve years.

Do you know what a million stamps looks like? If not, stop in at Kelley School office in Newark. They will direct you to the stamps on display from June 2 to June 9. Have fun! We did!

The students in Sue Stock's class include:

Mark Andrews, Kevin Barnes, Andrea Blankenberg, Kyle Boeckmann, Robert DeVey, Meghan DeWitt, Amber Elliott, Brittany Gilligan, Joseph Hulsizer, Caitlin Jablonski, Tiffany Jackson, Jamie LaManna, Jeff Oberdorf, Brandi Palermo, James Parker, Justina Quagliata, Antonio Sanon, Casey Trumble, Krystin Turazzo, Lisa VerPlank, Shirley Ramiriz, and Destiny Brown.
