Saturday, Newark will host the Meet of Champions, Section 5's Track & Field State Qualifier. The meet will be held on Newark's new eight-lane all-weather track. The field events will begin at 10:15 a.m. and the track events commence at 11 a.m.
Newark has one of the best track and field traditions in the state. This year, the boys won their second consecutive Sectional crown, their fifth in the last six years. Newark's girls had won FIVE consecutive championships going into this year's meet, but Newark placed third behind Victor and Honeoye Falls-Lima. No team, boys or girls, in any class, has ever won six championships in a row. Newark is led by senior LaTanya Parker. She is the Section 5 all-time record holder in
both the shot put and discus. Parker has won the state title in the shot put twice and the
discus state title once. Beside winning the two throws, she is also the Section 5 champ in
the 100 meter dash. She is also the top seed in both throws. Parker has accepted a full
scholarship for track to Michigan State University. The Meet of Champions will be LT's
last home meet.
Newark sophomores Dwayne Parker and Jesse Contario are both top seeds in their events. Both are undefeated in their main events: the 100 and 200 meter dashes for Parker, and the 3200 meter, or the two mile, for Contario. Corey Stirpe is second seed in the 200. In the recent Finger Lakes Championship, Cathy Sielawa placed fifth in the long jump. Other Newark seniors competing on their home track for the last time include: Amy
Hares, the Sectional winner in the triple jump; Eric Capostagno, the Sectional champ
in the 800 meter race; long-time Newark team leader Greg Switzer, a member of two winning
relays; Nelson Rivera, Newark's School record-holder in the pole vault; Adam Powell in the
pentathlon, Julius Scott in the shot put and Jeff Smith in the 3200 meter relay. Copyright © 1999 |

Track Sectionals
The Section 5 schools are divided into
three classes based on number of students. The winner of each classification advances to
the state championship held June 4 and 5 in Kingston. One additional athlete in each event
may advance it they meet a qualifying standard.
