Missing Sodus

This past week has definitely been a rainy one. (We needed the rain but could have used some breaks from it once in a while.) Life has been busy for everyone lately. My calendar has so much writing on it you can barely see the numbers anymore.

The girl scouts went on their trip to Misty Hollow last weekend. Ruth Lennox said they had a great time. I went last year with our Brownie Troop and it was a lot of fun, as well as being educational. The girls get to ride horseback and then go into the barn to learn how to groom the horses. There is a class teaching the girls how to identify each type of horse and they even have the opportunity to make a stick horse from a sock. (Who'd have known how nice an ordinary sock could look?) It was fun making your meals over a fire and roasting marshmallows while telling stories. It's a great way to get to know your group and their parents.

The Sodus Free Library is developing a new collection of literacy materials for use by new adult readers, those with low reading skills and those who are learning English as a second language. Several books have been purchased with the funds received from the l999 Pioneer Library System Outreach Mini Grant. The new titles include: Budgeting Your Money, Buying Insurance, Opening a Bank Account, Interviewing for a Job, Communicating with Others, Improving Work Habits, Living on Your Own and an American Civics series. For more information on this wonderful collection call the library at 483-9292.

Carol Garland went on a trip to Pittsburgh PA. Her son was awarded his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University. Congratulations!

There are many new books to be found at the Williamson Library:

What! Cried Granny by Kate Lum Good Job
Little Bear by Martin Waddell
My Day in the Garden
by Miela Ford (who by the way lives in Rochester)
Selina and the Shoo-Fly Pie by Barbara Smucker
Z-Z-Zoink!
by Bernard Most

There is also a new series of books, board books and many non-fiction titles.

The Library also has Internet terminals now on the children's and adult levels of the building. Kids can register with their parents and have access now. The online terminals are up and running as well as the multimedia terminal.

The summer reading program sounds like a fun one, registration will begin in June. The theme is Celebrate! Read! I believe all libraries are given the same theme and then using their imaginations to come up with fun ideas for the program at their particular library. I'll have more to share with you when the time gets closer for registration. The programs are always a lot of fun. There are many things to participate in and lots of great prizes.

Lucky for Sarah her class had to be canceled because of the rain - she chewed through yet another leash. For her timeout, she gets tied to the doorknob of the pantry door in the kitchen. She's found a new game, she buries her favorite tennis ball in the couch then literally digs it back out. Needless to say, she has lost her tennis ball privileges in the house for a while.

Have you been to the kids baseball games? How are they doing? I'm sure you'll be seeing the players in the parades soon. You'll see the scouting groups for sure. (This is the first year we won't be marching.) It'll seem strange not to have anywhere to go, we enjoyed it.

Thanks to all who sent me info this week. Hope you all have a wonderful Memorial Day. The weather is supposed to be perfect. Do you have picnic plans? Any ideas you'd like to share for having a really fun picnic please send them in my direction. Do you have ideas for games to keep the youngsters busy? Write me at

Have a nice week, take time to read with your children and find time to relax for yourself.
