Holiday Festival at Lyons Cultural Center

A holiday festival will take place November 20 and 21 at the Erie Canal Cultural Center. Located at 165 Water Street in Lyons, the Center plays host to a variety of craft vendors and a display of Christmas Trees decorated by local organizations.

Art exhibits by local painter Jenny Kingsley and photographer Elizabeth Barefoot will be on display in the lower area of the front building. Kingsley, who has had displays at the Center in the past, will be rotating her paintings to allow viewing of more area paintings. Barefoot takes the viewer to Colorado to visit the vast western expanse.

On loan to the Center through the Sodus Point Historical Society and Wayne County Museum is the Sodus Point Ice Harvesting display. This display of tools and pictures puts winter and its tasks today in perspective with those of the past.

Jay Harding's display of the Aldrich Change Bridge is still on view as well. A grass roots project that seeks to restore a past piece of Erie Canal history, Harding uses photographs, charts, a school report by his young son and a diorama to bring the project to us in vivid detail.

The Center is located in the historic Hammett Building, used over the years by first Bashford Vinegar Works for cider, vinegar and brandy production, and later by Hammett, the school products manufacturer for warehousing. One of the Canal Corridor Initiative key projects, the Center keeps maps and design for all the Wayne County projects under the HUD initiative on continuous display.

The Center itself is an adaptive re-use project to turn 42,000 square feet of warehouse space located right on the Canal and in the old Canal bed into a hub of cultural energy for the immediate four county region. Recognizing that our culture is multi-faceted, Erie Canal Cultural Center provides a forum for a vital mix of programs and services that support education, the arts, history and recreation in our local and regional communities.

Holiday Festival runs from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m until 5 p.m. on Sunday. Raffle tickets for a fresh turkey will be available along with discount coupons for

Christmas trees purchased from participating Wayne County tree growers. Refreshments will be available.
