Elks scholarships offered

Exalted Ruler David Verstraete of Newark Lodge #1249 announced a joint Elks National Foundation and New York State Elks Association scholarship competition for the 2000-2001 academic year.

The Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship/Leadership Awards, open to all New York State High School Seniors, will offer 25 scholarships ranging in amounts from $1,000 to $7,500 each per year for four years.

These awards to students will be part of the Elks program providing over 3,500 scholarships aggregating about $3,000,000. The New York State Elks Association will also offer 66 ($1000) one-year awards. Any eligible student may apply, the student need not be the child of a member of the Elks.

Applications for both awards will be available at the High Schools or at the local Elks Lodge on or after October 26.

John R. Oakes of Newark Lodge #1249 is the Scholarship Chairman to administer this program for local students who wish to compete. Additional information about this program can be obtained by calling him at 331.1249 or 331.2813.
