Missing Sodus

School will be starting sometime next week and everyone's getting ready. The school parking lot is filled with cars that belong to teachers getting their classrooms ready, office staff getting the office set and janitors doing last-minute polishing. While going past the Sodus Primary School, we heard a lot of hammering... wonder what they're building.

We were in Sodus visiting and picking up my son, who had gone to a sleepover-birthday party. They had lots of cake and pizza then spent the hours until 3 a.m. doing everything from board games, water balloons and a sleeping bag fight. (Kids will be the only ones who can enlighten you on that one.)

While there, we drove down Sergeant Street and chatted with Lill Burkholder for a bit. She informed me that the street has a new addition, the family that just moved in recently just had a baby. They have a lot of exciting things happening there.

We visited Betty Simmons at the Country Pets and More Store. (Of course, we had to get some more fish - a couple of small ones. Mine are still having little fish - too bad they aren't more colorful!) Betty tells me she's been working quite a bit at the Flea Market in Ontario. Last weekend was a big success, as they are sure this one will be. Hopefully, they'll stay open this year 'til Christmastime. There are many businesses, including Tom's Bargain Spot known for their store in Newark. Betty showed me the new Beanies she has added to the collection at the store.

Ruth Lennox was at the Kraft Shack sorting things for the Kraft Karnival which will take place on September ll from l0 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There will be craft sales and vendors, as well as hot dogs and soda. The Kraft Shack will be having more classes during the year. (Information can be found in the newsletter and at the store.) You can reserve a booth ($l0 for your own tent or no tent or you can share with Sandy for $20). Also, the Kraft Shack has been remodeled. They have many collectibles - Pufkins, Limited Treasures, NFL Bears , Jerry Garcia Bears and Coca Cola animals. At the Karnival, there will be many different crafts you can make, all at a cost of $l0 and under. As a matter of fact, Ruth was going through tiny little snow shovels for one of them. Sounds like a fun way to spend the day.

The Dog Show at Sodus Point had close to 200 dogs and a sell-out barbecue. Congratulations! Sounds like a big success!

Carol Garland of the Sodus Library is back from vacation. She visited her son and his wife at their new home in Illinois. (I wondered where she was when we stopped in. One of these days we'll time it right. No wonder I hadn't heard from her.)

Mrs. Gravelle from the Williamson Library just got back from vacation as well. She informed me that the readers who participated in the summer reading program read 280,000 minutes this summer..Wow! great job!

We went down to the beach and were quite surprised by the paved section where you park to look at the water and to go fishing. There are even painted lines for the parking spaces..Looks good! (I used to drive into all that sand and then wonder how I would get out, yesterday there was no problem. That used to be my favorite spot to sit and take pictures, of course I took some more.)

It was nice to see some friends that we missed the other times we came out for a visit. We enjoyed going to the beach, driving past the cottage we had rented and parking by the light house to watch the boats ( and take pictures). It was tough walking into the Sodus Library and not checking any books out. There were many new ones on the shelves and it was tempting.

Remember the Make Today Count Cancer Action support group meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month at the Father Cavanaugh Parish Center of the Church of the Epiphany from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
