Newark renames East Ave. bridge
The East Avenue bridge in Newark was officially renamed at a Sunday afternoon ceremony. The Veterans Memorial Bridge was reconstructed last year. The Newark High School band played the national anthems of Canada and the United States, and two trumpeters closed the ceremony with Taps. The guest speakers were Assemblyman Bob Oaks, Joan Grela from Mike Nozzolio's office, Tina Nadelen from Gov. George Pataki's office. LTC Fred Pirelli, Newark Mayor, introduced speakers and guests: Ernie Mori, commander of VFW Post #2883; Charlie Schade, commander American Legion Post #286; Gold Star Mother Dolores Wagemaker. The Honor Rolls were read and the Color Guard and Firing Party did the Salute to the War Dead. Pastor John Smith of New Hope Bible Church gave the opening and closing prayers. Refreshments were served after the ceremony, at the VFW Post and American Legion Post Home. The new sign is on the south end of the bridge structure. Copyright © 1999 |
