Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

It was another beautiful weekend, but today definitely shows signs of fall. The kids all tried to get out of the house without their jackets but it was just too chilly. I really don't blame them, once you give into wearing jackets, its all downhill. We won't even think about the heavier gear. Our dog Sarah hasn't figured out yet why it's so chilly in the mornings but doesn't like to stay out and play like she used to. What will she do when the snowflakes begin dropping on her nose? It'll be funny to watch, and more of a challenge to get her out the door.

The Dobbin family has come back from their family reunion in Halifax, Pennsylvania . Sounds as if quite a group went from the area. The Walt Dobbin family from Wolcott was there as well. Al's daughter, Sue, informed me that there was plenty of eating and singing. Now, why doesn't that surprise me? Especially the singing part.

News from the Hooper family in Florida - Eileen got the day off from work thanks to Hurricane Floyd and she said that Disneyworld had closed for the day. The family stayed over at her mom's house to be safe. (It's nice to have sunny weather all year, but I think I'll stay here and deal with the snow.) Glad to hear everyone is safe and sound.

flowersI haven't heard anything about the Kraft Karnival. I'm sure all went well. If you went, e-mail and tell me if you made a craft and which one. They all sounded like fun to make. Speaking of the Kraft Shack, remember the classes for the Lighthouse Lamp and Gazebo are coming up - Tuesday, September 21 and Thursday, Sept. 30; 6:30 - 9 p.m. The Kraft Shack is located at 7070 Ridge Rd. East in Sodus. If you need more information, call 315.483.2358

There's plenty to do in Sodus this weekend at Celebrate Sodus - tonight's Rotary Club Spaghetti Supper at Sodus High, 5 to 7:30 p.m.; then tomorrow, there's the Children's race at 8:45 and the 5K at 9; a Children's Historical Challenge Tour from 11 to 1 (from the American Legion); and a chicken barbecue from 11 to 1. On Sunday, it all ends with the Mexican Fiesta at the Primary School, from 2 to 8 p.m.

Girl Scout registration (girls 5 to 17) is tonight in the Williamson Elementary School cafeteria. (There was one in Sodus last night.) Just bring your immunization records and a $7 fee. (There is financial aid available.)

And for the older set, don't forget the Wine & Cheese tasting tomorrow at the Heluva Good Cheese Store. It's held by Literacy Volunteers as a fundraiser and is from 1 to 4 p.m. You can get tickets at the door. The store is on Barclay Rd.

bird bath & flowersYou can register now for fall dance classes at Miss Debi's on Main Street in Sodus or 206 S. Main Street in Newark. There is no registration fee. Miss Debi has added two new classes this year - Swing Dance for the adults and teens and Beginning Gymnastics. Other dances classes include Ballet, Lyrical, Jazz, Tap and Pre-School - something for everyone. For more information, call 315.524.3137

The Sodus Library has more new books to share, they are oldies but goodies.

Eloise in Paris

The original Curious George

Make Way for Ducklings

The entire Little House on the Prairie original series

The Beverly Clearys Ramona series

And several titles by Ronald Dahl

Speaking of sharing we have a few we think youll like as well:

In The Late Dark of the Deep Night by Gwenda Harslett Jeffrey (this story has a funny twist)

A Friend for Dragon by Dav Pilkey (this poor little dragon finds a very unusual friend)

Pigsty by Mark Teague (the room is a mess and becomes literally a pig sty, complete with real swine)

Grandfather Twilight by Barbara Berger (always a favorite at our house, nice illustrations)

Bears Shadow by Frank Asch ( Bear has had enough of being followed around and goes to some extreme measures to be sure it doesn't happen again)

Arthurs April Food by Marc Brown

sunetMany years ago, there was a lady in Sodus by the name of Granny Goodstory. The kids and I met her at the Victorian Faire at Sodus Point. She was dressed in Victorian Granny clothes, from the bonnet on her head to the ear trumpet she carried at her side. Do your children remember her? Perhaps your children remember the stories at the library I read to them about her and her adventures. I spoke to her yesterday and she says, 'Hi.' (I think she may have a surprise up her lacey sleeve, but we'll just have to wait and see. Ill keep you up to date. )

Remember to send me information on important events in you lives - the kids' field trips, favorite fall recipes, or craft ideas. Anything you'd like to share or see in the column.

Enjoy your week and the weather. (Today is a good one for baking bread. Nowadays, you just put all the ingredients in the bread maker turn it on and come home from work with the smell of fresh baked bread in the house.) It's also a nice time of year to sit outside with the kids on the porch swing and read some stories together.
