Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

The mornings are definitely getting chillier. The kids have gone from not wearing coats at all to asking for their mittens. I'm not ready for that yet (plus, I'm not really sure where the mittens are at this point).

Hurricane Floyd didn't do any harm to the Hooper family, who now lives in Florida, but it did affect another Wayne County native. I received a note from Diane DelPapa, who is now in North Carolina with her husband. They had two days without power and, as of the 21st, were still without drinking water. School was dismissed on the l6th and will resume on the 27th . Diane's road is washed out and the Neuse River was to crest on the 22nd. This has been a horrible experience for everyone, but Diane feels fortunate that she still has a home to go to. She wrote me that many are carrying their possessions in big garbage bags and are in great need of non-perishables, personal care products, baby supplies, blankets and pillows. What a terrible thing.

The Sodus High French Club will be holding a breakfast on October 3, co-hosting with the Webster-Fairport Elks. The all-you-can-eat breakfast will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and help offset costs for a coming trip to France, and charitable Elks programs. The Elks Lodge is located on Jackson Rd. in Webster. (Another breakfast is scheduled for Oct. 24.)

Don't forget to sign up for the Williamson Storytime. There are two different types of storytimes to enjoy. The Pre-School Storytime is Wednesdays from l0:30-ll, for children 3-5 . It will be October 6 through December 8. Children planning to attend must be three by October 1. The other storytime is called Lap Sit Storytime. (What a clever idea. Many times the younger children want to be a part of the storytime but they were just a little too young.) Lap Sit (which sounds comfy to me) will be from October 18 to November 15 on Monday mornings from l0:30-ll. Naturally, a parent or guardian must come with the child (and provide a lap), l2 months to three years old. I'll ask Mrs. Gravelle if she can give me some details without spoiling the fun. You can register for the storytimes in person (when you pick up more cool books to read ) or over the phone at 589.2048.

gulls.jpg (5984 bytes)The Williamson Library will also hold a Fall Used Book Sale. Donations of books in good condition can be taken to the library now for the sale on Thurs., Oct. 14, Fri., the 15th and Saturday the 16th.The sale is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. (Many of the books I purchased from previous sales, I took to the Nursing Home. It's nice to see the residents' faces light up.)

If you know of someone who will be having fun fall activities such as hayrides or apple picking, let me know. If you have special dates and events write to me at

Halloween will be here soon - a great time for a party before trick or treating. Do you have special punch you make? Game ideas? A favorite cookie recipe? Let me know and we'll share.

Have a nice week. Don't let the chilly air get to you.
