Pioneer Library System Introduces Pioneer Cat to its World Wide Website

Early in 1996 the Pioneer Library System World Wide Web Site became available at http://www.pls-net.org. In January of 1997 the Pioneer Cat was added. Pioneer Cat is a union catalog of the holdings of the 41 public libraries in Livingston, Ontario, Wayne and Wyoming counties. It is a BiblioFile WebPAC Service. In all, 283,396 titles with 730,270 holdings including materials of all types (books, magazines, videos and audiobooks) are represented and the information will be updated quarterly. The first update was March 21, 1997 and the next is scheduled for June 15, 1997. The creation of the catalog was made possible with funds from the Library Services and Contraction Act. The Pioneer Cat can be reached from the PLS Website or at http://pls.library.net.

The Library Corporation first introduced BiblioFile WebPAC in the fall of 1995 to help libraries meet the needs of their communities in the Information Age. WebPAC gives the Pioneer Library System the power to post their union catalog on the World Wide Web thus allowing students and patrons to access the library's collection from any location, at any time of day, any day of the week. Patrons need only a PC with Internet access and a Web browser.

Also available at the Pioneer Library System Web Site are a directory of all the Pioneer Libraries complete with addresses, phone numbers and hours; a calendar of events for PLS and member libraries, a map with the locations of the 41 libraries; information on PLS services available either through member libraries as with rotating collections of large print books, videos and audiobooks or directly as with Outreach services to special populations.
