Newark track news Newark girls track star LaTanya Parker had a great weekend last week as she was named the outstanding female performer of the meet at the Big Blue Track Classic at St. Josephs By the Sea on Staten Island, April 12. Parker set a meet record in the girls shotput with a toss of 41 feet 5 and 3/4 inches breaking the record set by former Reds track star Paula Allan. All first place finishers received a watch. Parker also ran on the winning 400 relay team of Briana Winkler, Tanya Brown and Lois Jenkins with a winning time of 51.1 seconds. The meet included 75 teams across the Northeast with over two thousand athletes participating. The Boys squad also fared well with the distance relay team of James Castillo, Brendan Morrissey, Shawn Shanley and Bill Barcomb placing fifth with a time of 11:28.3 just five seconds out of second place. The winning quartet was the indoor national champions from Virginia. Newark's Colleen McCusker placed fifth in the girls 800 with a time of 2:37.2. Teammate Amanda Leeuwen was sixth in the girls 3000 meter run at 11:48. Thanks to the local track booster club, the members of the track team were able to visit New York City, with trips to the Statue of Liberty, The Empire State Building, the Museum of Natural History, Wall Street and Radio City Music Hall. Newark took part in the Spring Breakout Invitational at Canandaigua on April 15. Newark boys had three third places: Shawn Shanley in the 800 meter in 2:12.1., Bill Barcomb in the 1600 meter (4:42.2) and Santos Gonzalez in the triple jump (38 ft. 4 in.). LaTanya Parker was second in the 100 meter run in 12.8 seconds. Briana Winkler won the 400 meter (:62.0), and Tanya Brown was third in the 400 hurdles (:73.0). Newark's 4 X 100 relay team won the event in 50.6 seconds. Parker won the shotput (40 ft. 9.75 in.) Amy Hares was second in the long jump (14 ft. 9.25 in.) and the triple jump (32 ft. 5 in.). Laura Bastian was second in the high jump (4 ft. 8 in.), and Amy Nichols won the discus with a throw of 106 feet. Copyright © 1997 |
