Ithaca student wins award

Laura Brunner is one of two Ithaca college students awarded a $1000 scholarship from the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State (AMTNYS) for the 1997-98 academic year. This is the first time that an Ithaca College student has been selected for this prestigious award.

Laura BrunnerThe Ithaca College senior is majoring in mathematics, with teacher certification for grades 7-12, at the School of Humanities and Sciences. Consistently on the Dean's List, she was named an Emerson Scholar and inducted into Oracle, Phi Kappa Phi (national), and Pi Mu Epsilon (mathematics) honor societies, serving as co-president of the latter. Brunner was previously awarded a Dana student internship to work with associate professor Dani Novak in designing a calculus curriculum for a high school sophomore program.

She also assisted with the College's summer computer-math and recreation camp aimed at students in grades 3-6. She has served as an instructor for the past three years at the Finger Lakes Gymnastics Academy. A graduate of Newark High School, she is the daughter of Frank and Monika Brunner.

Only three students from a field of 36 were selected. They are awarded to students with a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better.
