County will join in tax holiday
By Donna Comella
Wayne County supervisors have again agreed to join New York State in a week-long
sales tax exemption on clothing and footwear. Consumers will save a total 7 percent (4
percent state, 3 percent county) off purchases made from January 17 through January 23.
According to the state Department of Taxation and Finance, last January's "sales
tax holiday" saved consumers $32 million, and increased retail sales by $175 million.
Clothing sales that week hit $412 million.
The state budget will make the one-week holiday permanent in 1999.
Other business during Tuesday's meeting included:
- The appointment of Peg Churchill to the Industrial Development Agency Board. Churchill
will not return to her Town of Walworth Supervisor seat in January. Frank Guelli returns
to that post.
- An official split of the Office of Tourism and History. Supervisors appointed Marjory
Allen-Perez Director of Tourism and Promotion at an annual salary of $37,460. She leaves
her duties as County Historian. When establishing the Office of the County Historian,
supervisors named Deborah Ferrell as Acting County historian at an annual salary of
$24,975.
- Setting the Deputy County Clerk's position at an annual salary of $30,608 and
authorizing County Clerk Linda Shaffer to fill the post. Joanne Rothfus is retiring from
the position effective January 1, 1998.
- Year-end fund transfers, contract agreements and purchases. The Board of Supervisors
will conclude its 1997 business on December 30, at 9 a.m. at the Wayne County Courthouse
in Lyons.
