Newark Village Board meets The cry of "play ball" may be heard once again at Colburn Park if negotiations with the Northeast Collegiate League are successful. Village Trustee Peter Blandino reported on actions being taken to bring the league to Newark in time for the 1998 season. In a related issue, the board voted to release Ed Broidy of the North American Baseball League from the remaining year of his contract with the village for office space. Mayor Fred Pirelli opened discussion on a proposed project that would correct an "offset" intersection problem that exists at the Pal-Mart, WCTA, Quality Inn, and ARC corner. A proposal that Trustee Tony Virts has been working on for some time, would, in effect, "draw a line" from Newark Electric to the Quality Inn corner, thus straightening out Harrison Street. This would eliminate the "offset" intersection by lining up West Shore Blvd. with Harrison St. Pirelli emphasized that there is no tax money available for this project. However, if the project can be included in current canal grant programs that it is then feasible. The only other alternative to "fix" the intersection would be a series of timed signal lights. Dean Williamson of the Pal-Mart Corp., representatives of WCTA, and other community leaders were at the meeting to show their support for the project. Code Enforcement Officer Chuck Ackerman spoke to the board to ask for the authorization for the Fire Chief to post unsafe structures in Ackerman's absence. The board went one step further, authorizing all future chiefs as well as the line officer in charge at an emergency to make the decision. The Mayor announced that Village Attorney Art Williams has started the process of notifying the Pike Corp. of Rochester, general contractors of the Alex Eligh Community Center project, that problems have been discovered with the roof of the facility. These problems, while not causing leaks or other damage, are the result of poor quality workmanship. Pirelli instructed Williams to pursue the matter with Pike, and if necessary, the bonding company that covered the project. Copyright © 1997 |
