Jazz in January

The Newark High School Jazz Ensemble and Vocal Jazz Ensemble will present an evening of "sizzling" music on Friday, January 17 at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

The concert will feature guest artist Mark Kellogg, Associate Principal Trombone of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. In the concert, two pieces will feature Kellogg on the trombone and one piece on the euphonium.

Besides playing three instruments with the RPO (trombone, euphonium and bass trumpet), Kellogg is on the faculty of the Eastman School of Music, where he teaches and coordinates the brass chamber music program. He has also been a soloist for various brass and wind ensembles around the country. A graduate of the Eastman School, Kellogg played with the San Francisco Symphony, the National Repertory Orchestra and the Syracuse Symphony before returning to Rochester in 1989.

Active as a jazz musician throughout his career, he has played with jazz greats like Wynton Marsalis, Eddie Daniels and Mel Torme. He also travels around the country working with high school and college jazz ensembles.

Tickets for this concert, which showcases many fine student musicians as well as Kellogg, will be available at the door for $3.
