100 attend cancelled event at Alasa July 26 was a busy day at Alasa Farms in Alton. The annual antique show was to be held this past weekend but had been cancelled. However, some advertising from last year's Shaker Festival surfaced in newspapers in the Syracuse and Rochester area. This error resulted in many phone inquiries about the event and the arrival of over 100 people driving out to attend what was a non-event. The Sodus Shaker Festival is scheduled for Saturday, July 25, 1998. Guests travelled quite a distance to get to Alasa. Nancy Mangan, the owner of the farm, stated, "We saw the ads in the paper earlier in the week and made plans to host visitors by opening the gift shop, allowing self-guided tours of the farm and tours of the Shaker Dwelling house. In addition, packets of local information from the Wayne County Office of Tourism were distributed. I wanted to make sure if someone took the time to drive out here their trip was not a total waste of time." "A couple of people stopped by to visit, but because we did not have food, went to Sodus Point to eat and then returned," laughed Joni Montover, daughter-in-law to Mrs. Mangan. "I guess they really enjoyed this non-event." Alasa Farms is open to the public at different times during the year and hosts tour groups year-round. The next scheduled public event is U-pick apples, held every weekend in October. "We are sorry for any inconvenience to those who stopped by, but look forward to seeing them again at U-pick apples or next year at the Shaker Festival," said Griff Mangan, manager of Alasa Farms.
