Major General speaks to grads

Major General Larry G. Lehowitz, Marion Class of 1960, returned to his alma mater on June 27 to delivered the commencement address.

Prior to the General's address to the students, the Marion American Legion Post #1430 presented him with a plaque to honor his over 30 years of service in the U.S Army, and presented him with a lifetime membership in the American Legion.

Lehowitz attended grades 1-12 at Marion Central. He was president of the class of 1960 for both his junior and senior years. He went on to receive a B.S. degree from Kent State and a master's in business administration from Syracuse University.

Lehowitz is Commander of the U.S. Army Operational Test and Evaluation Command. He was commissioned in the regular Army from Kent State University in 1964 as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry. His most recent assignment was as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Combat Developments, Headquarters, Training and Doctrine Command, Fort Monroe, Virginia.

Lehowitz had two tours in Vietnam, where he served as platoon leader, and later as advisor to the Vietnamese Airborne Division. He has been assigned duties at the Pentagon and in Germany.

His awards and decorations include: Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit (with Oak Leaf Cluster); Bronze Star with "V" Device (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Meritorious Service Medal; Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster); Army Achievement Medal, Combat Infantry Badge; Senior Parachutist Badge; and Ranger Tab.

Major General Lehowitz is married to the former Jeannie Fraley and they have two children.
