Marlins are League, Division Champions

Division Champions

The Marlins of the Newark Police Athletic League are the 1997 playoff and National division champs. The 13-4 Marlins' quest for a championship crown started in the first game with a 9-3 win on July 16. The Marlins scored once in the first, added four Jon deWitn the third, three in the fifth and one in the sixth. The Yankees scored one in the third, fifth and sixth frame. Nick Palermo scored three runs while collecting two hits. The Marlins had seven hits in the game.

In game two, Marlin pitcher Jon deWit (pictured) allowed three Yankee hits in leading the Marlins to a 6-4 win and a playoff championship. Trent Barry was 2 for 3 in the game scoring once. The Marlins had four hits in the contest. DeWitt had six strikeouts for the winners. He finished the season with a 6-1 record.
