Winkler sets records, girls are #2 in state Several Newark athletes did well at State Championships. Track star Briana Winkler set a Section 5 and school record in the 400 meter event as she won the Class B State Championship. Winkler finished ahead of the field by one second with a time of :57.30. This is her best time ever in the event. The senior placed first in the 400 relay event with teammates Tanya Brown, Lois Jenkins and LaTanya Parker. The team finished the relay in :48.61. Brown placed 12th in the 400 hurdles (1:18.24). Amy Nichols placed second in the discus event with a toss of 136 feet, two inches. Her toss broke a Section 5 record owned by Newark's Paula Allan - 135 ft. 8 in. The Reds placed fifth in the discus with a fine effort by Parker. She placed second in the shot put with a toss of 40 ft. 8 in. Newark placed fifth in the 1600 relay event: Brown, Sara Johnson, Winkler and Amanda Leeuwen finished with a time of 4:08.9. The Lady Reds were second in the Class B championships with 41 points. The winner with 40 points is Section 9's Warwick. Copyright
