Dragons swim in East US Zones

Three Newark Dragon swimmers who qualified in the Niagara District Championships last month will swim in the 1997 Short Course Eastern Zone Age Group All Star Swimming Competition at the University of Buffalo, April 3, 4, 5. Swimmers from Maine to Virginia will participate in the meet. Last year the Eastern Zones where held at Princeton, while this year the Niagara District will host the event.

To qualify for the Zones, swimmers must place first or second in events in their age group in their district's championships. The Niagara District has over 5500 registered USS (United States Swimming) swimmers and is the third largest district in the country. United States Swimming is the sanctioning body for the US Olympic Team.

Arden Brust age ten, will swim in the 100 freestyle, the 200 freestyle, and the 200 IM. Arden is the daughter of Norman and Gail Brust.

Shannon Lewis, age twelve, will swim in the 100 breast. Shannon is the daughter of Dennis and Nancy Lewis.

Jeff Wood, age ten, will swim in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 50 back, 100 back, 50 fly, 100 fly, 100 IM and the 200 IM. Jeff is the son of James and Terri Wood.

All three swimmers will also likely swim in relay events for the Niagara District Team. The Niagara District Team will practice together at Fairport on March 29, before traveling to Buffalo for the zones meet. The three swimmers are coached by Dragons head coach John Weyman.
