Plans continue to bring Moving Wall
By Donna Comella

The Newark Veterans Council is deep in preparation for a visit from The Moving Wall, a mobile replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The Wall is scheduled to be in Newark August 1-7.

moving wallDon Miller, who heads the Council, has a 25-page handbook to assist in the preparations and requirements- location, assembly, ceremonies, how to locate names...

The Council must supply landscaping, flags, food for volunteers, tents and shelters, information tables, telephones, lighting, signs, brochures... And because the list is so long, the Veterans Council is not only scrambling to meet all the requirements, but also hoping for donations to offset the costs. (If you or your company would like to assist, call Miller at 331-7374.)

Pictured here is the Wall after it has been moved to and erected at a site. The aluminum panels are assembled into two walls, which moving walltogether, stretch to over 250 feet - slightly longer than the Memorial in Washington. At the vertex, the walls are six feet high. (In Washington, they are over 10 feet.)

Construction of The Moving Wall was completed in October 1984. It made its first appearance in Tyler, Texas, and by the end of the year, it had also travelled to Yuma, Arizona and San Jose, CA.

Miller said this week that plans are underway for a Central Park concert featuring Michael J. Martin, a Texas musician and Vietnam veteran. Watch for details of this event and others as Newark prepares to welcome and host The Moving Wall.
