Brownell gives Peace Corps program

Jennifer Brownell of Buffalo will present a slide-illustrated educational program entitled, "Life as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Cameroon, Africa," at the November 19 meeting of the Colonel William Prescott Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution.

Brownell is pictured in Cameroon, West Africa, where she served from December 1992 through February 1995. She and her Cameroonian counterparts set up prenatal care, preschooler and vaccination programs in the villages that had never before had vaccinations. Her official role was Maternal and Child Health Education, but she also helped one village build a school and another start a school library. The natives were as eager to learn the ways of the developed world, as Brownell was to experience a different culture from her own.

Brownell is a native of Geneva who graduated from Hartwick College. At college she volunteered in Habitat for Humanity, Aid to Battered Women, Rape Crisis Services, an Environmental Club and Students Against Drunk Driving. She currently works for the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation and is Director of Program Services for the Western New York Chapter and the Genesee Valley/Finger Lakes Chapter.

Brownell will compare her work in the Maternal and Child Education field in a Third World country and in the United States.

The public is invited to hear her program, at 1 p.m. The DAR house is located on High Street. Members of DAR and invited guests will gather at noon for a luncheon for which Janice Young and Madolyn Jagger, both of Palmyra, and Juli Ormsby of Newark, are hostesses.
