Officers gather in Newark
U.S. Marshal John P. McCaffrey was guest speaker at the dinner gathering of police officers, judges, and staff members of related agencies. The Marshals Service is part of the Dept. of Justice, and is the oldest federal law enforcement agency in this country. In 1789, President George Washington appointed the first 16 Marshals. Marshals are appointed by the President, confirmed by the Senate, to carry out the orders of Congress and the federal courts. There are 96 Marshals in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands. The Federal Witness Protection Program is only one program run by the Marshals. McCaffrey says there are 6700 people now in the Protection Program. Copyright © 1997 |
